Clash at Midway
The Battle of Midway, fought near the Central Pacific island of Midway,
is considered the decisive battle of the war in the Pacific. Before this
battle the Japanese were on the offensive, capturing territory
throughout Asia and the Pacific. By their attack, the Japanese had
planned to capture Midway to use as an advance base, as well as to
entrap and destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Because of communication
intelligence successes, the U.S. Pacific Fleet surprised the Japanese
forces, sinking the four Japanese carriers that had attacked Pearl
Harbor only six months before, while only losing one of our own
carriers. After Midway, the Americans and their Allies took the
offensive in the Pacific.
Goals: We will be recreating to the best of our ability the Battle of
Midway. What we are aiming for is the sense of “Will we find them before
they find us” in both the CO’s and Command Staffs AND the Pilots.
Which sides Scouts will be the Hero’s and spot the enemy fleets first !
Will the Torpedo Bombers get through or suffer the same fate as Torpedo
Eight Squadron.
Both sides have to take into account that they can not directly SEE
their enemy. Both CO’s will have to make major decisions on the fly that
could easily win the day for them or lose the Scenario for them.
REGISTRATION DATE – Sept. 28th. - Oct 5th ( ONE WEEK )
It will open at 3:00 PM ET. It will CLOSE on Oct. 5th at 3:00 PM ET.
Frame Days - We will be running 1 frame per day on 4 consecutive
Saturdays.
Nov. 2nd - 3:00 PM ET
Nov. 9th - 3:00 PM ET
Nov. 16th - 3:00 PM ET
Nov. 23rd - 3:00 PM ET
First Come First Serve – ALL Pilots who register will be assigned to fly
with a Group of Pilots in the Scenario. ALL Pilots who do not get on the
Final Pilot roster WILL be assigned to a Flight as a RESERVE Pilot. As
in ALL Scenarios, RESERVES usually end up flying regardless of how many
sign up.
Depending on the how many pilots the ARENA can hold and how many
register will determine how many frames each person in any group will
fly.
We will be using the MidwayTerrain . All Land bases outside of the
Midway Atoll will be inactive.
The CO's for the Scenario are:
Grimm - CAF
and
Naso
The LEAD CM's will be DmdJordi and AUB
Please review the WEB PAGE at
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/mikebowman/Clash_at_Midway_Update.htm
The rules and regulations governing the scenario are still a work in
progress. Both CO's and the CM staff will finalize ALL RULES before the
September 28th Registration Date.
The CO's and CM Staff are looking forward to your participation and
enjoyment.

I just hope they do not release the day before a FRAME !
Before the scenario starts would be nice or atleast 48 hrs BEFORE a frme starts !
All we need is to have 200+ people downloading an update during Frame day !

btw (smi-OT) I saw a discussion once in the scenario or TOD forumns asking about scenarios using human ack ack guns only. The reply indicated "human only" ack ack was worse than AI ack ack. Can anyone elaborate? It would seem that human ack ack would be the only way to go in a fleet-vs-fleet scenario. AI ack is never blind nor caught unawares regardless of it's lethality so it's hard to sneak in from the side no one is looking at. AI ack-ack always know what range and alt to fire at while humans take more time in ranging and IMO are a somewhat more realistic, less lethal threat. And quite often the fleet fighter CAP in scenarios just waits for the AI to finger the incoming bogies by shooting towards them and the CAP vectors accordingly. One other major consideration is that in real life ack-ack would be unbioased and lethal to all. This would make the habit seen in the MA of blind shooting into a furball, because you can only damage or shoot down enemy planes, quite dangerous to friendlies in a scenario. More discipline would be required.
Jordi - The CM's and CO's will be testing this theory to see if we can come up with an acceptable solution. We may need AI Ack to some degree since we do not want to force people to sit at a carrier that may NEVER come under attack in any particular frame. We will test to see if dead pilots can man some AA Guns. We need to fine the right balance betwen lots of flak that does not do a lot of damage and DEADLY FLAK that shoots everyone down before they can drop ! I have heard the 5 inch guns are the most porked in this respect.
(what a thrill it would be to fly one scenario with ALL accurate aircraft and no substitutes. Early B17's, Buffalo's, Vindicators,Kates, seaplanes/flying boats... http://www.centurytel.net/midway/air_battle.html ) [/B]
If the arena could hold 600+ pilots we would at least use the correct number of planes involved. There are just some moderate substitutions we have to live with. Even the BoB Scenario had to live with that same problem.
Thanks for your comments !

Btw, it's not the historical numbers involved I was refering to (although that would be awseom someday) it's just the correctplane set though out. This scenario looks well though out but I always wince a little when I see another plane type subbing for another. Still I do look forward to trying to get in on this. I'd love to fly an SBD if I could but walko-ons can't be picky :) I can't sign up for in the last scenario work took me away both Saturdays and I felt bad getting an active slot when so many did not. And I don't want to get an assigned slot with the possibility of the same happening again with work.
and good luck. I'll be watching for AAR's and keeping an eye on events as they unfold with this one. Should be fun. And exciting.
I would plan on registering anyway. No guarentee you make the first List if more people register before you do !
If you do get a primary ride and you find you can not attend just let your FL know and he can move a reserve into your spot.
And if you REALLY want the SDB I bet they do not fill up as fast as some other rides !

Are we ever going to get a scenario with frames on days
OTHER than Saturday???
Or more than four frames/event?
Just wondering...

Maybe.
AH has a larger Euro player influx than AW ever had. If we did a Wed / Sat or Friday Eve / Sunday that would effectily cut out a large percentage of potential players ?
What if the Battle of Britain event had been geared toward a Euro centric time frame. The US players could not take off a weekday afternoon to fly or the west coast players may not want to have to wake up at 4:00 AM ?
This is just the 2nd AH Scenario to have just 1 frame frame per week.

If there is no way to turn off the 5" VT-Fuzed guns with the laser rangefinders, no human gunners should be allowed on the fleets.
After all our scenario experience, there shouldn't even be a discussion.
Oedipus, the problem is that while the AI ack has all those problems you mentioned, human gunners get icons at 4000 yards, have a very precise rangefinder and a late-war proximity fuze (that only fuzes on proximity to aircraft, not to the sea -- meaning that while a torpedo plane under 25 feet might have some protection IRL, it doesn't here.
they also get a really cool ROF, and the gunners don't ever get suppressed.
In practice this means that in a scenario a skilled single 5" gunner can take out an entire squadron of torpedo planes before they even get into range (I was halfway on my way to doing this when I decided to log and give the poor bastards a shot); with two or three 5" gunners, there's no doubt (in a TOD, the 418 RCAF bravely accepted a suicide run, and, indeed, got wiped out before dropping).
The AI is bad, but the 5" guns make AAA unrealistic for our purposes. It's like giving every plane carrying the Mk108 2000 rounds, and made them "hit" the enemy aircraft when it passed within 100 feet. Anybody wan't to fly to berlin? I didn't think so.

Hey Guys! :)
Im really looking forward to this one, It should be alot of fun.
As a CO for one of the Sides (To be announced) I can promise we are going to do everything in our power to create an enjoyable experience.
This is a battle that is very winable for either the US forces or the Japanesse forces. It should be a really fun match up. Also its going to feature some very cool aircraft that will be in there element , unlike found in the MA.
I will be asking my Stategy guys to try to balance real life type tactics with just enough tricks to make it interesting.
Also, I will endevor to do my best to make sure even reservists can get a chance to fly. We will try to stay on top of things and plug empty slots as soon as we learn of them.
I welcome all AH pilots to join us in the pacific for Midway :)

Excelent!! :)
Looking forward to it!
As for ack - is it possible to tune down the ack lethality? If it is much less lethal it could simulate the higher innacuraccy. Also I see a "problem" with ack as the AI ack always shoot at one target only. It is not realistic at all. The human gunners with low lethal AI gunners could be solution?
Also it should be nice to see some "skin pack" for CVs deck to make them appear like Japanese CVs (light tan deck with big red circles) ;)
