I was wondering if someone could fill me in on improving my rocket aim. I can hit static, larger structues (VH etc) just fine, but against GVs and Boats I have trouble landing hits.
- what is the effective range of a rocket?
- how much does it drop off (maybe comparable to some ammo type) ?
- how fast is it? (distance covered per second)
+ any other advice on hitting small, mobile targets with rockets would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,

Effective range of a rocket is quite long, several thousand yards. Accuracy is horrible at that range though.
Best way I've found to use rockets, is just fire them as close as you can get.

I think the best way to 'acustom' yourself to rockets is the 'practice, practice and more practice' method using the Training X as an aid. You can get that in the Training Arena or offline if you set it up.
Set up offline by:
clipboard to SETUP > ARENA SETTINGS > FlightModeFlags.
Enable the 'bombsights' and 'gunsight' and you get all the 'training Xs' to help your aim.
After awhile, you can nail gun emplacements from 1.5k out.
They do drop way more than guns so an angled approach helps to increase the range.
Just my two cents,

Also, each different rocket type will act different, of course.
Like a P51s will be slightly different than a Typhoons and so on.
I think that may be more country based than plane related.
A P51D rockets will behave similar to a P47s or p38s.
The P51B however may be in that 'different' catagory.

go offline (but works in any arena)
type
.target (range of target)
ex: .target 300
this will make a target appear to the north of you at 300 yards away
type: .target 0
to make it go away
the target is useful for showing you dropoff of rockets and also the spread of the bullet stream at a particular range with a certain convergence set.
Give it a go I find it useful :)

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll try it all out! :)
Cheers!

Use rockets as if you are divebombing . Come in at a 45degree or steeper dive, at about 300mph you shouldn't need to adjust for drop with your gunsight . Using this method should have you popping PT boats and acks gv's left and right . Just as long as your not attacking GV's at himalayan alts (12k) at which the 14k windlayer will be playing havoc with your aim .

unfortunately, this site/sight is gone ... ??
where can i find a sight and info on how to use it firing rockets ??
i'll start with the other tips given here ... thanks.

I'm with Suave on this one: a steepish dive and some speed means you don't have to worry about trajectory drop too much. The direct overhead attack is also much safer against Osties and M16. As with dive-bombing be careful to pull out in time :)

fuze,
Thanks for the tip on getting the Training Xs off-line through Setup. There is a lot to AH that is not covered in the Help.

Anytime MachNix :)
Another 'tidbit' for offline is:
Setup > Arena Settings then change 'ProtectObjects'
It will allow you to practice destroying things without flying to enemy bases, it allows you to destroy things at friendly bases.
This is like the 'Grad School' of air sims, certainly not easy but well worth the time to learn it.
It is a TON-o-fun.

I need PT boat rocket usage help. "Open doors" seems to put them on standby, but I cannot find any method of aiming them even thou the pads turn both horisontally and vertically.
-
There isn't one Tsingis
Take a shot see where it lands and adjust accordingly
I didn't think they adjusted horizontally just vertically..

PT Boat rockets range aiming is adjusted by the stick. Pull back to raise angle of launcher, push forward on stick to reduce launcher angle. The rockets are always aimed at 0 degree relative.
Don't ever hit much with these.

one thing,
The divebomb site available in the TA and offline, works with rockets, telling you EXACTLY where they'll land.

Farthest I have ever killed anything with a rocket was a PT boat at 1.5 K out. Surprised me actually, didnt even think I would of hit 'em. It was one of those AA rockets that come with an 110, so I guess I got lucky on that one.

One aiming tip with rockets is that they won't follow a side-slip. If you are using your rudder to aim, the rockets will not hit that point, instead heading in the direction you are travelling, not the direction you happen to be pointing.
Be careful of this as I know it throws a lot of people's aim off with rockets.

That's interesting. I would've thought turning the plane would affect the rocket direction since the wings would've moved with the rudder twist. I guess its something in the game code.

Remember though, the direciton of motion is not the same as the direction you are pointed if you are sideslipping the plane with rudder. Once the rocket leaves the rail, the sideways forces of the direction of motion would likely straighten the rocket out in that direction, making it follow your path, not your direction (if that makes sense). It's like throwing a dart out the window of your moving car, it straightens out in the direction the car was travelling pretty quickly since the forces from the wind rushing by are enough to stabilize it in that direction.
It only really is a problem where you are trying to aim your rockets while "crabbing" the plane though. I see people do it all the time but it's pretty easy to avoid.
