Title: Suggestions for HTC to consider in the future - add your ideas
Post by: Dago on April 28, 2001, 09:44:00 PM
Just thought it would be nice to develop a comprehensive list of changes we would like to see in the future incorportated into AH.

Couple things I would like:

1) GV just throttle for movement like PT boats, not pushing the stick forward. I always have to retrim the stick when I jump in a gun, and sometimes I have to do it in a hurry.

2) Would like the cursor not to leave the text box when changing views or stuff, like going to the hangar, plane, etc.

Please add any suggestions you would have to this thread, no flames or whines please, and no more of the CHOG complaints so popular lately.  I am sure they have heard enough of that.  If some good ideas are offered, maybe we can give them something to consider.

Thanks
Dago

I'd like to see a user-defined "startup file" or something, so I don't have to "CTRL-I, CTRL-S, and .SPEED 200" every time I log on.

Don't forget for the startup file your .squelch list.  AND, increase the number of people you can squelch.  Heck, sometimes I would be happy if ".squelch 2" worked.

Let's do some major work on the film viewer/recorder.  Right now about 50% of my films only play tower view with *nothing* else, not even text in the buffer.  I've lost a lot of good films to this bug.  Also, on the film viewer, allow control-s to properly highlight my squad.  When you shoot down a plane, have it DISAPPEAR instead of bounce of the ground and ricochet into space.  Maybe even make a nice explosion when it hits ground.  I like to show people films from the game but it sucks explaining "that plane is actually dead--you won't see that in the game".  Add different color trails for friendly/squad/enemy.  Add a slider for trail length so if I have a ton of RAM I can show really long trails.  And while I'm ranting about film viewer, how about some future proofing for film files?  Films before 1.06 don't work anymore.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Besides a no-spill cupholder and surround-sound system in my F4U1-C... I'd like to see the CHUTE be able to shoot!  I mean he IS carrying a rifle.  Just think how cool it would be to get in a CHUTE vs CHUTE battle or how cool it would be to get a lucky shot and kill the pilot of the plane that shot you down.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

One more film recommendation:
Put the title of the film you are currently viewing at the top of the screen... maybe part of the text with framerate so you can ctrl-I and make it disappear.  When you get a big list of films to view it helps to know which one you're on.

Give us a hotkey to toggle custom maps.  The mouse pull down menu is too cumbersome to switch maps in the heat of the battle.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

How about some kind of an outside/plane veiw/animation when you get roasted instead of the insta-clipboard veiw?I'd love to see how I looked blowing up or ploughing into the ground.Just a little thing that might add to overall immersion.<S!>

I would like to be able to use the wheel on my mouse to scroll through the menus, like the ones in the hangar. I know HT would like to see it too, he said so, don't know why it can't be implemented I'm not a programmer.

As far as the film viewer goes, I would like to be able to edit it, cut sections out of it and join it to other cuts. Also the ability to sit "outside" of the fight and watch it in a third person mode would be nice.

I would like to see the effect of increased prop pitch affect manifold pressure realistically and have the ability to adjust fuel mixture with the resultant effect on cylinder head temperature and fuel economy. However I do beleive these should be automatic unless the pilot wants to fiddle with them.

Hi All,

Long list but here we go....

1). Re Vamped Vehicle control system (Throttle for Throttle, Rudder for steering, and leave the gun position completely on the Joystick X & Y Axis).

2). Ability to supply fields from C47's etc to speed up field re build times.

3). Ack in Field rebuild time as well as everything else (But provide limited small arms defence immediately).

4). Landlines (Trains etc) Sealines (Convoys)

5). Authentic cockpits layouts, Metric system for LW etc.

6). Better Damage model (Graphics)

7). No Icons for troops

8). Startup File for "CTRL S" "Shift F1" etc

9). Ability for more than one gunner to join a bomber

Not my definitive list but enough for starters.

Speaking of films, the ability to convert AH films to MPEG 2 or some other common format would be great.  Would also allow the addition of voice-overs.

Perhaps one of the more "creative" members of the community could come up with a way to do this?  It would be an invaluable training tool.

Smoking flaming wreck tumbles towards ground despite the pilot bailing. Should show a chute *and* the dead plane.

If ya don't move yer mouse fer 5 secs, the pointer goes away till ya move it again. The thing always gets in my way.

MP3 player in the cockpit... Like a car stereo... Can select and play tunes while flyin' from the comfort of yer own cockpit.

1-perked Chog
2-N1K2 FM taken a look (a plane that dives with a Fw190A8 being 3000lbs lighter, and climbs with a Me109G10 being 1000lbs heavier is something wich needs some look)
3-revised torque model (too soft now IMO)
4-88mm ack accuracy toned to realistic levels
5-Ostwinds with OPEN TOPs   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
6-250kg bombs for the F8 wings, Rockets for the F8.
7-Fixed high altitude speed for the TA-152
8-A Me410   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Oh, this is easy:
1. JS support for prop control (RPM)
2. Mixture controls w. JS support
3. turbo/supercharger controls
4. For 1 through 3:
     - Allow engine management to be a realism option;
     - Allow a SLIGHTLY higher power output with manual EM (if configured right, that is).  Of course, the appropriate penalties should be implemented, i.e. leaner mixture yields higher output and also higher temps, especally at low speed (in a climb, etc.)
5. More planes!  Any kind is good, but I would particularly like to see some "exotics" like the ME-163 and Gloster Meteor/ME-262. I also think the Douglas (I think?) A-26 Invader would be FABULOUS!!! If you do an A26, please model the wing properly.  It landed flat (no flare when using flaps, it would stall!)
6. Manual control of field acks
7. Surface winds (x-wind in a taildragger is fun!)
8. Auto-gunning buffs (that you can disable, of course)
9. Again - REALISTIC ENGINE MANAGEMENT! =)
10. Change to the field damage systems - allow cratering of runways to significantly impact operations.  Seriously - this was a major tactic in the war.  Perhaps deepen the craters so planes can't just roll over them (deformation)?  Also make the craters stick around for a while... maybe 10 or 15 minutes.
11. To go along with the above - place a berm around the FHs to limit "off-field" operations.  That's the only way cratering will work.
I could probably think of more, but it's too late in the dev cycle for most of this stuff anyway.  Maybe in 1.08!

Try playing back the film in slow-mo and hitting the screenshot button repeatedly... then import your image sequence into a film editor.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

The problem is the motion would be dang herky jerky unless you could grab screenshots at exact timings.  Ah, so HTC needs to add a rapid fire screenshot mechanism or someone write a macro (heck even a saitek button assignment) to snapshots ever 0.X seconds.

you can use a program called snagit  to make  movies in avi format. im not sure how well it works but it may be worth a try

Well Trell, see for yourself how snagit works:
Film 1 - my Aces High snagit demo (http://www1.jump.net/~cs3/archives/010429/snagit-demo.mov) 1.2mb
--note the deadly vertical rolling scissors... well deadly if I flew chog  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/tongue.gif)

Then here is method two, which involves a rapid sequence of screenshots used to construct a movie.
Film 2 - screenshot to video (http://www1.jump.net/~cs3/archives/010429/invthruhangar-demo.mov) 977k
--note the awesome P-47 flying again  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/cool.gif)

The quality of the second film is almost as good as the "real thing", albeit at 512x384 resolution for comparison with the snagit film.  (Also there is an annoying fcoder message there because I had to use that program to convert the RLE compressed bitmap files so Quicktime pro would accept them.)  Snagit just could not sustain an acceptable framerate, even with my film viewer in AH slowed all the way down.

Problem with the second film is it relied on me doing a rapid fire dance on the alt-s key combo while my film played in slo-mo.  Unfortunately, I cannot tap at 30 fps nor can my computer write BMPs on the fly at 30 fps.  So I have to slow down the film when I do this.  What would help this method would be if HT could give us better control over speed--instead of a slider maybe give us a .5 speed, 0.25 speed.  Then maybe a function that does the rapid screenshots for you.  Or like I said before, program my SGE software to do the tapping for me--too lazy to do that now.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Thanks for the suggestion on snagit. THis was educational.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

BUTTONS! Make them cancel if you mouseup off the button instead of being stuck with whatever you accidently pressed.  For example a lot of times i find myself in a rush to up from a field and clicks are going everywhere and I wind up hitting something like the webpage charts button and since there is no way to cancel i'm stuck waiting for it to flip out of ah and load browser.  ARRGH.  There is no reason why the buttons should behave like this, they don't do this in any other program I've ever seen.

1.  Higher perk bonus factor for returning
to base.  Even higher for successful     landing on CV.

2.  Don't have base ack shoot at chutes.       This is inhumane.  Have them save their ammo and just capture me and offer me a cigarette instead.

3.  More JAPANESE PLANES.

4.  Seaplanes.  Air/Sea rescue (if you land a gunner-capable plane near a friendly chute OTG (within a 25 yds), you can accept that pilot as a gunner).   Big points for this!
PBY?

5.  More perk planes.

More true divebombers (e.g. SBD Dauntless).

Actually create a stat for "vulches".  They still count as kills and deaths, but they're separated out for our viewing pleasure/pain.  Question here would be where is the line drawn for when the plane still counts as a vulch?  Wheels still on ground?  X seconds after liftoff?

Those are the only suggestions I have that haven't been seen before (well, that I haven't seen before.)

Re-iteration of famous/infamous ideas.

Perk the CHog.  Not just because of the Hispanos, but because there weren't that many in service in WWII, and you can't go anywhere in MA without seeing a CHog.  Every Corsair I've seen in a historical show on TV had 6 .50 calibre MGs.  I didn't even know there was a Corsair model with 20mm cannons until I played Aces High.  It sounds like a special plane to me, and I thought that's what the perk system was all about.

Try out the historical arena idea.  Each tour of duty will have a specific plane set.  Add older model planes (Spit mkI, e.g.) for the pre '42 - '43 tours.  Introduce the newer models for the next tour, possibly phasing out the older models.

Great Ideas, saw a couple of things I was thinking of posted so Ill just reitterate them.

1.  Trains and supply ships.  These could be used to resupply fields and cities under attack.  Itd offer targets of opprtunity and when damaged or destroyed would affect rebuild times.

2.  PBY or other recon planes.  What would be cool with this is when working in conjunction with the fleet as an FO.  They could circle the target area, and select a target, a ship, or a land target.  This information could be displayed on the ship for the gunners as range and heading information allowing them to adjust fire.

3.  Enhance the perk system or drop it altogether.  Its a great idea. It just needs to grow a bit.  Tons of good ideas on how to do so.

4.  Icons - Ditto, tons of great ideas for this as well that would enhance immersion.

Thats it for me.

Many good ideas here.  I'll add my two cents.

As a buff pilot, I'd like to be able to hear when my gunners fire.  It would be especially cool if tail guns were fainter than forward guns.

Here are my wishes for Christmas  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

1. I love the PBY idea {Maybe to make that plane applicable have a small radar range}

2. Maybe an SBD Dive Bomber.

3. Mosquito for my bud RHood  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

4. How about a new tank?!?!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

5. Boy I am gonna catch some hell for this... HOW ABOUT A B-29???

I guess my greatest wish is that when new planes are added it be just that NEW planes, not an additional version of the 109 or 190 (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

I mean I am sure that Japan is not the only country that flew German planes so I bet there were Allied partners that flew American planes.....Right??? But I doubt that we need to make to many additional same planes different markings, I mean whats the point.

Maybe to be fair to all players, and not seem discriminatory, each patch HT should try and add 1 NEW plane from each major super power and each plane be respective to its RL first productions dates. I.E. Select 4 or 5 new plane sets that were in production in 1943, THAT WE DON'T HAVE RIGHT NOW, from each of the super powers. And try to launch those plane sets in the next patch.

Just a thought though.

Engine Management) Would add immersion and much more realism to the game

Damage Modelling) Add more systems that could be damaged and more situations such as Electrical systems, undercarriage damage engine fires + Fire Extinguishers etc. Also Graphical damage bullet holes etc.

More Aircraft  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

A bigger role for transport aircraft + more of them! The ability to use them to resupply the airfields etc.

B29  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Improvements to the GUI I find the system a bit cumbersome and very unforgiving sometimes.
