"Hayes died of kidney failure at Shands Hospital late Wednesday, daughter Westine Lodge said. He was hospitalized earlier this month and had also battled liver ailments and prostate cancer ( news - web sites).
Hayes had a sparkling athletic career, and as a Cowboys receiver forced the rest of the NFL to change the way pass defense was played. But many of his accomplishments were later tainted by drug and alcohol addiction, which landed him in prison and was a big reason he was never enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. "

"the fastest man alive"
how sad.

I just want to point something out...
"liver ailments" and "kidney failure" are direct results of alcohol abuse.
So long as your public service announcement not to do drugs includes alcohol, I have absolutely no problem with it.

Man I just cant get over him being from Jacksonville. I mean how many people who lived/born/or started a life here have died in like the past year? To me it seems like quite alot.

Yea this one!

The best reason to not do drugs is that you may accidentally double post. Thank you for the horrible reminder.

I wonder how many people are getting a sense of deja vu right now? I think I'm having a flashback.

I am glad it was Hayes that died and not someone I actually know. If he was stupid enough to throw away what most of us dream of having, then I have no sympathy. Part of being an athlete is taking care of your body.

the best reason not to do drugs is to keep your dopamine receptors in good shape

How many of his problems were related to use of anabolic steroids?
If he was the 'fastest man on earth' then he most likely doped his body full of steroids. That causes often a very rapid dysfunction of bodily organs.
My guess is that he first doped himself up, then started injecting narcotics too and basically burned his body up.

actually, there isn't a link between alcohol abuse and kidney failure..liver yes. as alcohol is processed thru the liver.
-
Try telling that to an alcy....
The kidney is a filter, the acid in alcohol isn't exactly giving it any help..
Of course, kidney failure was probably a combo of alcohol, drugs, and, if he did any, steroids.
Most people who die from liver failure due to alcohol weren't that far away from losing their kidneys... they just didn't live long enough for them to completely fail.

His "fastest man" claim was after his gold medal and World record in the 1964 Olympic 100 meter race. I don't believe anabolic steriods were in wide use back then. He may have used them during his NFL career however.

Alcohol is any -ane with an OH group attached. Methonol is Methane CH3OH. Ethanol..is ethane..C2H5OH that is the only one we can metabloize. Sincec OH is a water molecule with one less Hydrogen atom, it fools the transport protein that make the kidneys transport filtered water back into the blood stream. When that Portein is lock with an alcohol molecule, it binds tighter to the protein than the water molecule. This prevents the water from being transported back into the blood stream. Hence we piss more as we drink alcohol and become dehydrated. Liver failure will cause a poor or no breakdown of the alcohol and this strains the kidneys. Liver/kidney failure walk hand in hand.

Sounds like I gotta give up either alcohol or water. Hmmmm. Decisions, decisions.
