Title: Sopranos Help
Post by: aknimitz on September 22, 2002, 09:55:54 PM
Ok, I am a newbie Sopranos watcher - and I love it! But I need some help with tonights episode. When someone told someone to give someone 5 construction jobs, and 3 no shows ... what was that all about? And the stealing of the fiber optics and tile?

Am I going to be lost not having watched the previous seasons or can you pick up in mid strike like this?

Thanks! :)

Nim

Pretty simple actually.  The thing about the Fiber Optics and Tile,  those items were used in the construction and the guys boosted them (i.e. stole them from the sight for their profit)   The thing about no shows etc etc, well did you notice that all they did was sit on their tulips and not do anything?  Well im not sure about the other part though

The "no-show" and "no-work" jobs are a way that the construction company pays off the mafia for getting them the contract.  It's basically money laundering.  Mafia buys/extorts/blackmails to get influence in the government (e.g. the assemblyman that Tony had coffee with at Italianissimo) for a public works project.  They use that influence to get the contract for construction to go to a firm or union which they control or are in business with.  Then they skim money off the contract, some of which goes back to the assemblyman and some of which is paid to mafia guys in the form of jobs for which they get paid even if they don't show up ("no-show") or do any work ("no-work").  Tony has a no-show "waste management" job, and Christopher used to have a no-work "investment banker" job.  Almost all of the guys in the family have a "job" like this.  The "jobs" give them some money, but more importantly it gives them an opportunity to file a (partially) legitimate tax return in order to keep up appearances.  Somebody has a house like one of these guys and drives a glitzy car, but doesn't file a tax return - that's going to raise eyebrows eventually.

Just got HBO with the new DirectTV setup.  Saw The Sopranos for the first time.  I gotta wonder what all they hype is about.

Seems like another mob soap opera to me.

Oh well.. different strokes for different folks.

Oh.. Sopranos was definately better than the woody allen goes to hollywood crap that was on after it.  Or the married men show.  Simply pathetic.

Deja,

I would suggest renting the older seasons to catch up with the characters.  It is in 13 episode seasons so very rarely does a single episode wrap up in a nice package.  This season is supposed to be the best on par with the first season, and season 5 will be the end of the run, with a Movie to be released in theaters therafter.

My wifes and my draw to the show is the location shooting(jersey boy and pa. gal).  Along with our love of mafia films specifically Good Fellas.
