It's "Progress" - russian cargo vehicle allegedely going to the International Space Station. "Progress"-type ships are used for resupply, I do not think they ever carried people. That is the same kind that was remotely controlled into a collision with the Mir space station.

They better watch out on the ISC!

Engine name is ”Soyuz”. Take off is scheduled on 25 Sep 02 from Voykandrul, Kazakhstan.
“Soyuz” will be carrying “ Progress M1-9” that will re-supply ISS with fuel and other supply. “Progress M1-8” with load of trash going to de-attach today from ISS will burn up in reentry to earth’s atmosphere.

Russian: Engine name is ”Soyuz”...

Considering that the entity for which it was named - "Soyuz" (Union) - desintegrated a decare ago among among chaos and bloodshed, I would think the renaming would be in order.

I imagine what a reaction to a US shuttle named "Slavery" would be.

That’s ridicules. If you don’t like that name, send mail to design burrow and ask then to change name stating your reasons. I’m sure they are going to have a good laugh.  For crying out loud, it’s a freaking piece of equipment. Think of it this way: That booster will get burned going down atmosphere just like ex Soviet Union. ;)

Miko, sometimes you speak as if you have emigrant syndrome in the last stage.

Union means the same thing as Empire to British people, it's the closest thing I can find.

Union was a country where I could go hiking to Central Caucasus, Carpatians or great mountains of Middle Asia with no risk of being kidnapped or shot down. It was a place where I studied in the best engineering college with guys from Ukraine, Moldavia and Georgia.

Soyuz is a name for a launch vehicle, originally called Molniya (Lightning), first tested in 1966, that is actually a 3rd stage on top of 2-staged R-7 ICBM, first tested in 1955. First 3-staged launch vehicle based on R-7 was called Vostok (East). The original R-7 used as a launched vehicle was often called "Sputnik". R-7 and it's modifications, using LOX/kerosene, are the most massively produced launch vehicle, and the world's most reliable and cheap one, different estimations give values up to 10 times cheaper then Space Shuttle per kilogram on the same orbit.

 Miko :
 Who, me? :D

My country (Ukraine) would have been out of "Soyus" whether I had emigrated or not. So I would have posted the same observation even if I still lived in a town I was born in (provided I had internet access).
Bolshevics forgot to ask whether Ukraine wanted to be in to start with - same as they did not ask its opinion when they gave it to Germany in 1918 so that Germany could use the resources to continue the struggle against the remainder of the "Entente Cordiale".

Anyway, good to see you posting back here. Have you been out for a few weeks?

You have a very strange view on what happened in 1918. This is widely discussed in newsgroups like fido7.ru.military for the last few years. You can get that newsgroup at http://news://ddt.demos.su (hehe .su ;)) There is constant flame between Ukrainian nationalists and Russian majority there. I am half-Ukrainian, you know, so I find all that "discussions" pretty stupid.

I was "out" for almost a month. Have too many problems now, lots of work, got robbed by our beloved Militia (cellphone and passport included), selling the apartment I inherited from my Grandmother, etc... In fact I am still "out". :(
