Title: WIN 2000 vs. WIN ME
Post by: Duedel on September 24, 2002, 04:00:37 AM
I use Win ME and this is by far the worst system I ever used. I only have frame rates about 20-30. Now I'm thinking about Win 2000 because I get tired of this blue screen. So here my questions (only regarding AH not any other software, I know Win 2000 is a lot better).

Is AH with 2000 faster?
Does AH has any probs with 2000?
Does my MS Sidewinder have any probs with AH?

Here are my specs:

Pentium 900
256 MB RAM
40 GB Harddisk
GForce 2 (not MX) with latest drivers
Resolution: 1280 x 1024

Win2K should work great for you, and it will work fine with all of that hardware.  Just be sure to download DX 8.1b and SP3 ahead of time to make it easy on yourself. :)

I don't know if it will be any faster, but the newer nVidia drivers do tend to be optimized for Windows 2000 and XP instead of WinME.  (Should be called "ReamME").  Win2K should solve your bluescreens UNLESS you have an uderlying hardware problem.

Back in my ISP daze we loaded up a machine with ME from the MSDN set.  After poking around for a while we concluded that Microshaft actually took all the really bad features from Win98, WinNT, and Win2k and combined them into one OS so people who didn't already could hate Microschwans OSs easily and convienently.

In a !surprising number of cases replacing WinME with *any* other OS solves a plethora of problems.

I use 2K Pro, personally, and haven't had any problems at all.  I used to have XP Pro running, and reverted back to 2K.

If your  Sidewinder stick  is FFB you wont be able to adjust the forces with 2000 or XP!

Really?  Is this a problem with Microsoft Sidewinders?  I ask because my Force Feedback Logitech Wingman Strike Commander 3D works fine under Win2k, and the forces are all adjustable.

What im saying is that i know for a FACT that XP doesnt support the old MSFFB 1 versions and the software will not work with XP!!!
i think its the same for 2000

Now the forces will work but you cant scale them using the software so your stuck using only what the game gives you out!

MS isnt doing any updates for it either

This might not effect the MSFFB2 ..........that i dont know!

AH high gives you all the control over FFB you will need.

MS FFB1 works just fine with W2K and AH.

I have a M$ FFB 2.  I can adjust the forces in Win2k.

Just as a footnote, I prefer Win2k over XP for security, privacy, and licensing issues.  I also recommend Service Pack 2, and not installing Service Pack 3.  My experience is SP 3 breaks things, rather than fixes them.  (SP 3 broke my external USR modem drivers, ruined some cad tool software I was working with, made me reinstall Office, IE 6 won't install after SP 3 is on if you only had IE 5.0 previously, AND adds an "automatic update feature" you can't disable without manually killing the service.  Read the EULA to see what that little feature is for...)

I guess I just got lucky then.  Just for fun though, you might want to take a look at your services list LePaul.  Do you really want Microsoft to be able to send files to your computer without permission?  (Automatic Updates and one other service SP3 adds can do this.)  Now just for fun, try this, go onto the control panel, pick "Automatic Updates" and select disable.  Reboot and look again at the services list.  Surprisingly enough, you'll find the service is still active and running. ;)  (You can stop the service and disable it manually.)
