Was flying hi-cover for a single friendly last night. Looked down and it was Mistah' HiTech his-self! He was doing little lazy chandelles, simply for the joy of flying (I guess? had no other tactical reason?)
A text discussion broke out, and making a long story short, HT has just solo'd a real plane enroute to getting his PPL ticket.
Also, (and more interesting to me), he just bought an air-O'-plane,, ta' boot! He got a hot "home-built", called a Vans' RV8.
Also, (and EVEN MORE INTERESTING to me), he mentioned that he may be getting together with Vans' (most widely built kitplane in the world), and create an online RV series flight simulator. A fantastic training aid to augment Mike Segars' RV transition training program..
My best wishes to him on all counts! The RV's are great rides!
Heres a couple pics of an RV8,, which is described as follows by a former F16 Jock after demo riding an RV8:
"..it's the closest thing a civilian will ever get to flying a real F16.."

Here's the "business end" of HT's new toy.. (needs a nose cannon however)

I do believe that RV8 you are showing is the Vans RV8 that was on display at Oshkosh this year.
If HT is buying an RV (a wise choice), yes they are great aircraft and a blast to fly, then obviously we are paying him too much money! Next thing ya know, our fees will be sponsoring a T28, hoooyahhhh. :)

doh ... bribing is becoming more and more costly :p
-
Howdy..
Actually this RV8 was flown into the EAA-486 Vans' Fly-In @ Oswego NY in 1999 by Bill Benedict,, formerly Vans #2 man in charge.
I had the honor of sitting with this man at the banquet. He & his son were killed in this plane a few weeks later, enroute to another Fly-In.
A very sad day. Mr. Benedict was a really nice guy. Never talked down to the simpleton RV builders like me.. ;-)

Glad to see HT successful enough to buy really cool toys. Must be nice. :)
-
well i hope that HT will get rid of the training wheel up front... i mean REAL MEN fly
TAILDRAGGERS !!
+ the RVs look a lot more sexy with a "conventional" gear rather than a nosewheel :)

This is the one.

That's a kick prettythang ride hitech!
-
it's cleared for Voltige ?
voltige should be aerobatics for you :)

It's a taildragger after all. When do they install the .50's? :)
-
Uh gee, aint that a picture of an RV-4?
-
Very nice hitech, but dump the Nancy boy color scheme and get some nice Navy Blue on her! :D
-
Sweet ride, HT! Are ya gonna get SuperFly or Nate to do up a special paint job? Some HTC logos on the nose?
-sudz

you had a chance to try and knock off hitech and you didnt take it...smart
just think your money helped pay for that

RV-8 a great ride, guy in town is building an RV-9.
I'm really torn....tandem or side by side seating...all the Van's planes have a great reputation are are great fun to fly. A guy who used to hangar a Cessna 150 near my BD-5 was trying to talk me into going halves on a RV-8A (trike)....its very tempting. I just love that yellow paint job on the factory one.
HiTech...what? No blantant sales logos and trademarks??
Be a great business write off :D
-
Perk the RV-8.
Nice ride HT !

To the victor the spoils..
WTG HT!

Congrats HT, can't think of anyone that I know who's worked harder for it.
I did think however that nate & super could spend a bit of time doing a nice AH logo for it. :)
Enjoy!
-
Uh gee, aint that a picture of an RV-4?
An RV-4 is easy to identify by the triangular roll bar between front and rear seats. The RV-8 has no such roll bar.
WTG HT, the RV are great aircraft. I have been toying with the idea of building an RV-8 myself. A good friend is building a 7, and I know several guys with RVs at the airport I fly at.

All I know, is that Hitech and Pyro are not allowed to fly in the same plane at the same time :)

:)

there's only one logo that should be put on such a sweet ride....
the Assassin babe :)
-
Sweet ride HT! I'm Jealous! If anyone in the Dallas area see's an RV-8 making practice strafing runs on them during their commute, you now know who it is. ;)
-
Could someone please post a link to a website with more information about these things? Danka. :D

AKWeav: You undermodled my grin.
Update on the RV.
I have been looking at RV's for the past 2 months. There were 2 of them that I was interested in both priced the same. The grey one (picture above) had a better paint job, plus localizer. They Yellow one had a better prop & eng. Lo and behold the owner of the yellow one droped it price by 10k yesterday, im sending him a check this after noon.
So this will be my new bird.

You bought The Wobble's 3/4 scale P51? :)
Nice plane, wtg!
-
I flew in an RV-6 once.
2 months later the pilot that I flew with died in it.
:(

Copy that. Fly Safe HiTech.
-
For safety find a good mechanic, its worth the time to look.
Maybe you can work a discount by bribing him with a comped AH account. :)
dago

Oh gawd!, now I gotta redo the whold thing.:D
Btw, I'll see what I can do to fix the grin:)
-
AKWeav - Try to find a cheap copy of "Kai's Photo Soap" (if I recall correctly)
It has all sorts of image goofery wrapped up in a cheesy AOL-style interface. Not something you'd use for everyday image manipulation, but it's fun to play with.
-
Way cool! Can you get your taildragger sign-off in that, since it's experimental?
-
Quote:AKWeav: You undermodled my grin.
Ok, is this more accurite?
-
Bluefish: Have my tail wheel endorsment already. Did that in super cub and decathalon.
Luckly of the 2 transition RV instructors (for insurance) is located in arlington. Have 2 hours so far in RV6.
HiTech

"...dropped his price by 10k.."
???
Seems strange that he'd drop it THAT much..whats the catch?
-
He gets unlimited access to the HTC porn server...
-
Now as an experimental, will you be able to obtain the repairman certificate to do some of the service?
Like yellow.... ;-)
-
I can't help think since we all helped HT pay for this (subscriptions)that Con go'ers would all get some stick time in it, eh? :D

I flew in a Boeing recently, where's my BMW ride? :p

Ride? hell, I'll let you drive it if your out this way...I'm insured :D

...wanna rethink that offer? :p :D

Probably not right away. The FAA issues these to the "manufacturer", and by that they consider that guy who actually built it and put his name on the data plate to be the person that will get the Repairmans Certificate.
The path that can be attempted when someone buys a previously built and flown homebuilt is to work on it for a year or two under the supervision of a licensed A&P, then petition the FAA for the Repairmens Cert. At this point, it all depends on the generousity of that particular Fed.
Of course, when HT has his Private Certificate in his pocket, he will then be able to at least perform "Preventive Maintenance". This is limited to the tasks defined in part 43 as preventive maintenance.

Hmm, that might be a problem with a stick shift :D
-
Very cool Hitech!! :)
Damn I wish I had a real plane someday...
-
Wow, a traildragger endorsement even before your first solo. Now THAT"S style.
"If it's got a wheel in the front, you're driving not flying."
-
"If it's got a wheel in the front, you're driving not flying."
Richard Bong might have disagreed with you, as might have Paul Tibbets. :)

Hey HiTech,
Your RV-9 is a great plane, and great looker. Congrats. I envy!
Take it a step at a time, don't overfly your ability, or your airplane.
Have an instructor take you up in a Decathlon or Pitts, and wring it out with him. When you fly your RV, respect it.
I have plenty names of the guys, I knew and flew with, ate breakfast with, tinkered with airplanes with, went to Oshkosh with, and also was shocked at their death when they put a hole in the ground. I know they died doing what they loved, but they could have...been the cool "old" guy at the airport.
Fly to be the cool "old" guy!
Thorns

Congrats :)

and also was shocked at their death when they put a hole in the ground.
Thorns - Excellant advice.
I've been in the aviation business 24 yrs and have seen exactly the same thing. A few I know have died. Two friends from work died in a J3 a little while back, one was very experienced, the other a fairly new PP. In a Cub of all things.
Hang around airports enough, you will know someone who dies, if your lucky, you won't have to see it happen.

LePaul,
Nope, only the person who actually built it will be able to get that. It would involve documentation to show he was the actual builder and provide photos, papers etc. for corroboration. He would also have to innitiate the airworthy process and apply for the placards after FAA inspection then fly the minimum hours before getting permission to fly it away from the field and take passengers and so on.
Now he won't need an AI mechanic to do the annual inspections since it's an experimental. Which brings this to mind.
HT in about 6 months I'll have my A&P. Why don't we talk about the maintenance of this lil bird and my account here......... ;)
-
I think I got HT's grin modeled correctly now..
