The complete irresponsible arrogence of this prettythanghole fediddleing blows me away. You think Bush is bad? At least he is just stupid. Cretien is a power mad, senile old bastard. I can just picture him sitting in a throne cackling to himself, "I am STILL Emperor!".
"OTTAWA - The government spent $100 million on new luxury jets because the old ones are no longer safe, the prime minister said Tuesday.
"Many times, I've been involved in some urgent landings with the one we have at this moment – many times," Jean Chrétien said.
But documents uncovered in access to information requests point only to a single case in which the prime minister's jet was involved in a serious situation. That was in June 2001, when it made an emergency landing in Stockholm.
"When those circumstances happen, it is not a pleasant experience, and therefore, safety considerations are no doubt part of the decision," he said.
The order was placed after senior officers in the Department of National Defence said the older jets were fine.
"Given that there were no identifiable problems or trends with this fleet … it is recommended that remedial action, such as fleet modernization or replacement is not warranted at this time," a report produced last winter said.
Opposition MPs have questioned the ethics of granting the large contract without a public tendering process, and wondered why the government can find money quickly for Challenger jets but can't replace aging military equipment such as the Navy's Sea King helicopters.
But the prime minister continues to insist purchasing the two jets was not a waste of taxpayers' money.
"We needed them," Chrétien said. "And it was decided by the administration to have jets for the operation of the government."
Jeesus Christ! He has one diddlying precautionary landing and we buy two diddlying jets that we don't need. Meanwhile, our 10,000 year old Sea Kings, which have been falling out the sky for years and killing Canadian Military personel STILL haven't been replace. ARRRHHHHHH!!

Yup, first thing the liberals did was kill the new helicopter that was being designed...AFTER 80 - 100 million was already spent.
Don't feel bad though, it happens all over the world. Here we have a Premier that will only drink champagne, who flies first class everywhere, stays in the most expensive suites and is driven around in stretch limos. It is one reason why she is never actually ON the island.
First thing her government did was purchase brand new (illegal) cars for all of the cabinet ministers. I say illegal because they were bigger than the law allows here, because the roads are very narrow. So they changed the law...for them. Ironically the transport minister drove an illegal car here for months before the law was changed.
Not as bad as buying luxury aircraft...but based on the size of our budget it probably equates.
I just hope she doesn't read this about Canada's new airplanes...it might give her ideas for a new mode of government transporation.

Not to hijack your thread, but this reminds me of the Avero Arrow program back in the late 50's. I saw a movie about it and did a little internet research. The jet was an all Canadian design that would have been the fastest interceptor in the world (mach 2+) had it not been cancelled for political reasons.

It was 20 years ahead of it's time. The US asked Diefenbaker to scrap it. So he did.

A friend of mine happened to be in the vicinity of the Downsview Base just north of Toronto the other day. They have a very, very sad little air museum there apparently. The only good thing he said about it was that there were two guys in there building an "Arrow" from scratch.
Might be worth a look.

The only good thing about Cretien is I don't live next door to him.
He is a major embarresment to us Canucks.

So this is what the guy does when he isn't blaming the USA for 911.... :(
Thrawn when is the next election?

It would have been the premier fighter of it's era had the CONSERVATIVE party not axed it....Lot's of talented Aerospace Engineers lost their jobs.
