I have had the rare opportunity to see what happens to the peace, love, dove, guys.  When you slap a steel pot on their heads, and start shooting at them.  They turn into soldiers faster than a cat can lick his wiskers.  They squeaked about it a lot more.  But, they pulled the trigger just as fast as the rest of us.
