Title: Learning German - suggestions please
Post by: fd ski on September 29, 2002, 09:36:46 AM
I'm attempting to get my company to send me to Frankfurt for 2 years. It would be great opportunity for me to learn german and see more of a world.
Before i do that, i need to get at least rudementary understanding and speaking ability in German.
I have 8 months.  :)

I have a hearing memory, hince reading of the book does nothing for me.
Tapes/CD would be great. The "interactive click here"/PC material i usually find childlish and too time consuming. CDs would be preferable since i can listen to them while i commute to work/school and in the car.

Anyone knows a good program ?

Thanks,

I had a very pretty young german girl in the patrol car with me once and I asked her to teach me some german. So she did. She kept saying to me...

Something like (I cant spell it, so guessing)

"Du ist bein fierdres arshlo"

Anyway. Some months later she comes clean. It means.

"You are a horses ar$eh*le."

Needless to say, I gave up on German and tried for French instead :)

I would have thought that getting very, very angry is a good first step in learning German.  That way you too can sound as pissed off as all Germans do when they talk.

Secondly, go out and buy an "umpah" music CD or two...and some military marching music.

You will be fluent in no time.;)

German is pretty easy, I found I learned the best reading German newspapers or a easy book in German.
The very best way is to be "Thrown to the Lions".

And if you come to Frankfurt FD, give me a yell. I live just outside of Frankfurt. I originally come from Springfield, Ma.

....oops, guess the book and newspapers are out

I would think any CD from the library would help. It isn' that difficult. English has a lot of Germanic influences. Unlike English where Position defines meaning in a sentence.German like many euro languages uses endings on their words to denotethe meaning...English Direct Objects come after the verb. German they can come most any place, the verb comes last etc. Interesting.

Berlitz is a pretty good school. check out some local language schools in your area that offer private lessons.

Commando War comics are also a reliable and accurate source of the German language.
