...after 43 years is a real biatch!
Thank COD for modern, and less than lethal, nicotine delivery systems ;)
-
Anytime you quit is a good time. I quit in 77 after 15 years. Cold turkey, the first 3 days are the worse. Good Luck!

quit after 3 years, hardest thing i have ever done. I still wanted one for 1 1/2 year but now they are nothing.

Strangely can't seem to get this book on the US amazon.... so here's a link to the uk amazon
The Only Way to Stop Smoking Permanently
Allen Carr, Penguin Books, ISBN: 0140244751 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0140244751/qid=1033322768/sr=2-4/ref=sr_2_1_4/202-2763493-4521458)
Worked for me, and the best bit: it was painless, easy and I don't miss the cigs at all.

I recently spoke to one of the temps at my work..
she was chewing nicotine gum. I asked her when she quit smoking..
initially she didn't want to reply because she was embarrassed but finally her reply was
"Two years ago"
she just can't seem to kick the gum now hehehe
Good Luck, don't underestimate how hard it really is..try not to kill anyone =)
-
I don't know how you people ever start! Blech! If cigarettes are so tasty, then they'd make cigarette flavored ice cream.
:D
-
i second that "Allen Carr's" Book helped me too.
But doing sport on a regulary basis is what helped me
the most to forgett the stinkin things.

20 less butts flicked out the window :)
always amazed how a smoker thinks the world is his/her ashtray
-
Quitting..to smell better, to smell, better, to taste better, to smell better, to breath easier, to laugh and cry for those who still smoke, to smell better, to loose that really cool golden goatee and mustache, to smell better, to live longer, to save money, to not have to go outside, and did I forget, to smell better. Sooo many cool things.

No toejam, that has always amazed me too. How nice to pull up to a stop light to see hundreds of butts littering the side of the road.
WTG Lars, stick with it, you will be so happy you did later.

I just place my butts alongside your plastic bags, unwanted furniture, Mcdonald wrappers and oil spill leaks.
Keep it all in one place ;)
-
wtg lars, don't go back, you'll never regret it,i will be joining you (non smoking) in a few weeks......i swear :)
-
Forget about cold turkey and nicotine patches... Zyban is the thing.

Ahh, the old, "other people do it so I will to" pathetic excuse. Doesn't wash, you are responsible for what you do, regardless of what others do. I dont really see any excuse for being a slob.
Personally, I never throw garbage out the window, I hang on till it until I get home and toss it in the garbage can.

Stupidest decision I ever made was to start smoking.
-
I quit about 2 years ago after 12 years of smoking. It was tough, but the best thing I ever did. My advice is to go cold turkey. It will be hard for a week or so, but once you get past that it's not so bad. Just remember: You can never, ever take even just one drag from a cigarette again. You're setting yourself up for failure if you do. Good luck and hang in there!

despite what modern media will have you believe.
Smokers do not represent satan, they aren't all criminals, dirtbags and litterbugs.
no hijack intended just trying to broaden a few horizons.
-
Kanth,
It's more about the personal good than some media imagos.
Healthier, less stinkier...
-
That was more a reaction to Eagler and Dago than anything else.
I realize quitting is healthy and you lose that cigarette smell that's all good.
Characterizing smokers and littering criminals isn't so hot.
It's all individual actions
like those bums that crap on the porches where I work..
that doesn't mean all bums are porch crappers..

watch all the highway fires we have here during dry season
butts out the window is about more things than just being a lazy littering slob
i think the filter should contain a huge burst of nicotine and taste great. that way the smoking losers would digest them and it'd be a win win
-
Go for it Lars! It'll be hard, but one of the best decisions you'll make.
Funny thing is, there will come a time when you won't even think of smoking. Doesn't seem like it now, but it'll happen.
-
WTFG on quitting! my woman gave it up after we met. Cold Turkey..she was a raging she-squeak for a couple weeks but once she got all the nicotine out of her system she leveled out. soon you will be able to smell and taste things again like you haven't in a long time. The trick will be avoiding trading one addiction for another, from smokes to food or booze.
-
Raub forgets to mention that I gave him untold mountains of toejam too. :)
I quit 3 1/2 years ago after 5 or 6 years. Cold turkey - you just have to convince yourself that you really don't want to die from it, and it becomes simple. :)
-
it's sooo worth it. I was a pack and a half a day smoker for 20 years..
quit cold turkey (got sick of it) while living with my GF that smoked (at the time).
was rough but worth it.
I'm pretty damned active now at 44 and I'm sure if I were still smoking I'd be close to comatose.
Then there's the money you save.. on buying ciggies, on dentist bills, etc.
-
Congrats to all who have quit or never started smoking. I have made a few attempts, all unsuccessful but some lasting for a time.
One big incentive I found was adding up all the cigs I hadn't smoked. Example: "As of today, I have not lit 2,196 cigarettes"
One day I will make it - luck and determination to all who quit...

I quit April 7th 2000 at 9:00pm. That is just an indication of how strong a pull those little bastards have on you. Smoked for about 20 years. (didn't start till I was 22.... how stupid is that?)
Like sandman I used the Zyban. Made the transition much easier. I would recommend it to anyone, and my prescription was covered by health insurance.
-
I smoked 23 years, 2 to 2 1/2 packs a day, quit over 10 years ago.
Quitting smoking is the single best thing a person can do for their health, so good luck Lars, hang in there and you will be amazed at how much better you feel once you're off cigarettes.

my older sister is/was a hard core smoker - 2 to 3 packs a day
she quit in July and got on the patch
She said they step down the nicotine dose with each patch with the last one to be worn for two weeks and then you are "cured"
well, talked to her yesterday - she's still wearing the "two week" patch 2 months later :)
but if she, the dragon lady, can quit - anyone can
g/l with ur demon

the dragon lady.. lol

Nope, they're just smelly, inconsiderate stunninghunks. I know, I was one until 6 months ago. :)

Congratulations!
I quit cold turkey 3 times in 30 years of smoking, every time after 2 years a switch went off and I was smoking again. Even after quitting I still wanted a cigarette most of the time. This last time has been different though, I went to a hypnosis class at a local high school and haven't had a smoke or even an urge to have one ever since. Going down the parkway behind a car with a smoker, I can smell it if the windows are open, my sense of smell and taste are much better.
The cost for the class was $42, and an extra $15 for a CD or cassette. A woman in my office went to a hypnosis session at a local Holiday Inn, her and her husband paid $500 total, it seems they get people so worked up that they buy all the supplements and such, as always buyer beware.
Good Luck, you're a non smoker now!
-
Wlfgng, Eagler's sister stole that title from my mother in law, the incarnate of Evil herself. Unfortunately she doesn't smoke or drink so she'll probably outlive me and I'll never get to dance on her grave.
-
ROFLMAO!!!

at least you hopefully smell better now :D

This is one thing that "concerns" me about quitting.
I started to smoke before I ever performed oral sex on a woman.:p
-
Thanks for the replys and support guys. I'll beat this thing I'm sure but it's a tough row to hoe right now. Flying over the weekend I found myself reaching for the ashtray every time I would TO and set my climbout speed...old habits yaknow :D
Doing the Nicotrol thing now. The delivery system is similar to smoking and the good thing about that method over most others is that you use it only when needed...kinda like the gum but it seems to satisfy the 'trigger' events better for me.
The cost savings are already paying off. I used to spend $45-50 every two weeks on cigs...my new USB CH flight gear is going to get here all that much sooner now :D:D

Sure do! Errr, ah,,,,well, different anyway. Not sure about better. The stunninghunk part actually got a lot worse, then somewhat better. Still improving, I think.
