Title: Would it be possible?
Post by: J_A_B on September 30, 2002, 12:50:18 AM
Would it be possible to implement some sort of texture on the graphics of our planes to show damage to components not actually destroyed?

Example, if I were to take a couple pings to my left wing, I think it'd be cool to then see a few holes in my wing, even if those "holes" were nothing more than .bmp's superimposed on the wing texture.  The .target command can already do the effect I'm looking for so the AH engine seems to be capable of it.  The damage model seems to know when we're taking hits and what part of the plane gets hit, so how difficult would it be to add such a "bullet holes" effect?

Such an effect only needs to be local; I'd never get close enough to my opponents to see it on their plane anyway.  Having such an effect being strictly local would also permit it to be a locally configurable option, saving those with low-end systems from having a FPS hit.

Thanks.

Sounds like a great idea to me. There's been many times I've wondered what got pinged when no damage was listed. I've also wondered when they were going to model _ marks in the callsigns:D

Yeah, this would be cool.

Far fetched: add degradatory damage to flight surfaces, so that lift/control effectiveness degrades due to an invcreasing number of holes/dents. This would be in addition to having  1/2 or whole wing fall off to damage - so a 30mm could blow your wing clean off if it hits "right" or strike in a non-critical spot to produce only a gaping hole in the wing....
