Title: Battlefield 1942
Post by: Pei on September 30, 2002, 03:34:59 PM
I played this a fair bit this weekend and a had a lot of fun, when I could find a decent server. I didn't bother with the aircraft (after taking a close look at thier "Spitfire") but the infantry is a lot of fun in the urban levels (Berling & Stalingrad are my favourites). Of course it's not a sim (IJA with Sturmgewehr 44s anyone?) but it is fun.

Since I like the infantry best I was wondering if it was worth the effort of downloading Day of Defeat. At least the weapons seem a bit more accurate and the spawn system seems to be similar. Any recommendations?

Day of defeat is excellent, if you don't mind the dated graphics. They've really gone for historical accuracy.

BF 1942 is great. I love the Market Garden, Tubruk, El Alamein and Iwo Jima maps. Kharkov is also good.

What I don't like is the dubious 'substitutions'. The Japanese with all German weapons, the British without a Lee-Enfield or Vickers in sight and the Russians with BARs and Thompsons?

The planes are fun in their own way. It's like an arcade game of yesteryear with superb 3D graphics.

Still playing DoD. Caen2 map rocks !!! :)

HL has got to be THE GAME for PC. What is it now ? 5 years running strong ? Last i checked Counterstrike was still most played game on the net !!!

As for DoD weapons. MG42 baby !!! With the tippod down.. just move often before snipers show up :)

A nice game let down by lousy net code, it needs patching fast before the community moves back to MOHAA or RTCW, the ammount of servers seems to diminish slowly in size every day.

That's the one thing that lets BF1942 down - the lag. Even with a 60ms connection to a server, at long range using the sniper rifle it's very very difficult.

My favourite tactic is to fly or jeep to their major spawn base and snipe people from afar in the hills that can usually be found around the main bases. Being British on the El Alamein map is the best - there are some high elevation bushes on the Western side of the ridge overlooking the German base. Hide in there and shoot the tards in the head, as they stand around waiting for a plane to spawn. :)

Very few lag issues for me...

Though I don't choose servers with a ping of any higher than 90 or so.  I also usually stay with the smaller servers <24 players

a couple i have found that work real smooth:

JEC Battlegrounds
ASDA Toronto

The game is a lot of fun if you can actually get into a server that has less than 100 ms ping.  Usually they are all full for me, and I spend a half hour trying to get into one.  Man, I'm glad AH doesn't work like that!  ;)
I'll buy the game once they work out the lag issues.   Until then, I'll enjoy the demo.  I've gotten pretty good at rolling the tank into a heavy situation against other tanks/anit-tank personel, and cleaning up the place for my teammates.

I like the arcadish way 1942 plays. Feels more like a movie every second

im already kinda bored with the maps in the retail game though. maybe because i havent gotten a good game with 64 people in it and waiting to see that work flawlessly is what i bought the game for

I'm usually an engineer, so when the tank starts to get beat up, I jump out and repair it.   Then, kick some more ass.  :)

Feature vs bug and an old bug at that. Seems you can tolerate something being askew if you enjoy the game,  huh?

Yes, it is a game and quite fun. The one it is being compared to..say on EA board...is a sim. Lots of things could be done to make the other sims easier, but whe re would be the fun for a simmer?

heh, damn tc, wouldn't it be just as fun to sit in a corner and hit yourself in the head with a tack hammer then ask for these constant bbs beatings in responce to your insipid sour drivel on all games not related to wwiiol?

Pretends quite well and gets better at doing so each patch, perhaps some day it will satisfy your level of sim experience. When is the first BF patch due? I hear the netcode needs work, something about laggy servers, maybe it it is the number of players online. Tribes2 had that same problem trying to get 64 ppl online at once. I dont think anyones middle road server is going to handle that many ppl yet.

Strategy First controlled access to players. Pub a box would not quite sit well with give away. You can still do stuff offline from the full install. Since you post your experience, I will post mine. Sysgate works fine for me. I get 40+ FPS online in all fights. I could play it on a 1.3amd. Lower FPS. Then again this week should be the dx8.1 with T&L with fps increase. Since it was coded to help the low end guys out early on,  that problem is being fixed. Acutally looks pretty good now.

Back to the box. Done in February, with SF input, and I believe CRS thought they could do it, with the time. The gold ship date surprised a lot of the beta and from I have been able to gather, it did some rodents too.

I am sorry that I have a better experience than you had.

For god's sake, hardcase, most people aren't interested in your born again, evangelising.

As for the topic of this discussion - BF 1942 - it's a great game anyway, I'd recommend it. And if you don't believe me, try the demo. :)

lol. Summonabidge, I never thought of doing that. I saw the wrench but never gave it another thought.  I have had fun with the land mines and tnt but this wil be interesting to try.  Thanks Superfly :)

Theres a few stable 32 people servers floating around I play on....

Played an excellent game of Bulge yesterday, where we american engineers defended a bridge the whole game, mining the crap outa the bridges, using TNT for the inf....with the odd sherman for backup

it's arcadey, but fun

BF1942 has some nice visuals. Has some great maps. Is popular but gets old real fast.  I was bored within a week and the net code is atrocious.  Some servers run smooth. Others are like scraping your eyeball across industrial sandpaper.

Id reccomend having a system compatible with one required for WW2Online and waiting to buy it AFTER they release a decent patch to fix its laggy prettythang.

(There. I got WW2OL and 1942 in, in the same post. WOOHOO!)

Ode a P3 600 is your gaming machine? How about posting that each time you speak about that "other" sim.  No wonder that other sim was no fun for you. Before you go there, it is above the mins on the box.

Hey Fd-Ski do you play under the same name in DOD?

I thought I saw you in there one night a few weeks ago.

I'm Turd Boy!

Yeah Yeah I know the name fits.

I too am enjoying BF192. I bounce between Aces High and BF1942 nightly. There are some really good maps with the retail version. My fav is IWO JIMA, to me it plays like the ultimate paintabll field once you get on the island. For tank battles Battle of the Bulge is a great.
The netcode and hitbox issues are annoying but if you stick with it you can almost figure it out. I was experimenting and lead my shots almost 1/4 inch ahead of my target with the sniper rifle and WAS HITTING! Everyone's saying the coders are on a vacation, and a patch should be coming soon, so they say.

Is that lead on top of what you would lead a guy you are sniping? Are you having to do that even if the guy isnt moving?

so..do you lead then add a 1/4" more lead on a moving target?

Thats total lead. I doubled what I'd normally lead in any other game ie: DOD.  Looks totally unreal but it killed em, gotta be a hitbox/netcode issue. I play on two servers that give me pings of 15-25 so its not a lag issue.

If they are still I kneel, hold the cursor on em for 3 secs then fire and I'll kill em.. if I fire instantly they'll take the hit and not die.. very unconsistant.
