Title: P38 damage is WAY off
Post by: Soviet on November 08, 2001, 03:38:00 PM
Today i flew the P38 and i came across a lone lanc, I set up an attack and I pull up from underneath at 400 and pepper him with .50cal and 20MM ammo.  He is going down, that exact second i hear ONE hit noise and BAM back in the tower, and no this wasn't a ram i was 200meters away from him i pulled away, and no he didn't pepper me i was watching the bomber as it went down in flames, A couple (probably a stream of 3 or 4 bullets was all that hit me due to the "Buff blossoming" of MG fire that goes on when some buffs spiral down to the ground.  My question is how can this happen?  Also i was once a Yak-9U and i sprayed about 3 12.7MM into the tail of a P38 (that was all i had left and i figured just spray and run) and to my amazement the tail of the P38 goes flying off) i almost felt sorry for the guy cause 3 12.7MM seems hardly realistic.

please look into the P38 Damage.

Thanks

sounds like you had a pilot kill, the old golden BB. The tail does come off seemingly easy, but I have seen them lose 1/2 a wing a rudder, 1 engine, 2 guns and still make it back home also.

Yeah, probably a "Golden BB" pilot kill.

P-38 tail seems a bit stronger in 1.08, but that my be my imagination.    :)

Buff single ping kills happen to all aircraft, not just the P38.  It also could very well have been a "golden BB" as already stated...

I have never ever seen gun cam footage of just the tail being shot off of an aircraft.  I think this 'tail falling off' stuff is a bit unrealistic.

That would be a great idea, not the elevator just "caking" off all at once, it thing it should have reduced effectivness if it's hit.  so basically your a sitting duck if you take enough hit's but you can limp home.

The damage model may be off, but the stall model is spot on.

Twice tonite while flying the P38 I was shot to hell- lost one of my vert stabs, half my elevator, and half a wing.

I flew it about 5 times tonite, and 4 times I was damaged. Twice I got everything shot out- but never lost the horiz stab or both vert stabs. Once I lost an engine and once I was shot down while typing on my keyboard.

Then again, the two times I got shot to hell- it was by ponies with .50s. The cannons might just shear the tail section off.

From the shooting-end the P38 looks like a tough bird now.  I got some bullets into one P38 tonight and he started streaming black and white smoke and was able to come around and ping him on a couple more passes but he fought on and finally bought the farm fighting overwhelming numbers.  I was actually getting upset in my Hellcat that my .50's weren't bringing him down!

I thought the 38 was modeled like a paper tiger in past versions, but thought the latest patch gave the old bird some armor. I recently pulled up beneath one and gave it a long blast from my Typhoon. Hit sprites erupted all along its wings, but I only managed to knock out one engine. It took me a couple of minutes to hunt that sucker down and take out the other engine. The tail boom stayed intact, much to my disappointment.
