California is the nation's largest and most important state.  When you insult California, you insult America.

joke right? LOL - good one

I'm sure that is the way many egotistical californians must think, please be assured, it isn't the way the majority if not the rest of the country thinks of it

so you don't have a problem with a $28 BILLION settlement?

Udie what you are forgetting is that while we dominate most of the important industries (agriculture, aerospace, electronics, software, music, movies, ad infinitum), we also control the most important industry of all - porn.  Behave or we'll cut you off!

I could be wrong, but I'm damn near certain that tobacco is not grown anywhere in California.

Why should we give a toejame about Phillip Morris?

California., the place that invented smog and the $1.5 million dollar 1500 sq ft , 2 bed , 1 bath house.

i'm glad you people live there and not me.

i would have loved to hear that jury discuss how many BILLIONS  to award that smoker.

In the trial it was exposed that doctors had warned her for 4 decades that smoking was bad. She was quoted by witnesses ( doctors and friends) as saying "I'm an adult, it's my business" !!!!!

The jury heard this evendence! What a crock.

I was born in socialist CA, but luckily I moved to Az as a kid.

God bless my parents.

I have spent a few years in Cal. and in fairness there are two "California's".  They should split it in half right down interstate 5, or the mountains. The east side should be called California, and the west side should be called La La land.

A European socialist is actually a socialist.

I'll bet none of the jurors even knows what a billion is.  The last time I checked, a fully equiped nuclear aircraft carrier cost about $15 billion.  This idiot smoker gets $28 billion?

Somebody please check my math.  I figure that 60 cigarretes per day, every day for 30 years, with a $28 billion payday, works out to over $42,000  per cigarette.

A great day for lawyers.

What is so funny is that the juriers are going to be the ones paying!!  The tobacco companies are into food and other products not even associated with tobacco!

Tobacco companies should move off-shore and manufacture overseas.  Only buy tobacco from foriegn sources!

That should make the non-smoking crowd very happy.  Just think of the import taxes that could be levyed!!

Socialist state nearing reality

Tom Martin - For the Journal-Constitution

Friday, October 27, 2000

As a devoted follower of Karl Marx, I am delighted to see the People's Democratic Republic of America finally beginning to approach the glorious Socialist paradise he and I had always envisioned. Our new slogan might be "From cradle to grave without one smidgen of personal responsibility." Consider:

Free prenatal care, free government health care, free food stamps, free welfare, free child care, free education, free school lunches, free government housing, free prescription drugs and free job training (if that's your taste).

If you want to sue somebody, there's free legal aid. There is even a delightful idea that if you do work but don't make much money or pay any taxes, the government will send you somebody else's tax refund. They call it the earned income tax credit. Is that neat or what? Even Karl never thought of that one.

All of the above is not quite yet a reality, but most of it is, and in the coming election we have the opportunity to get a good chunk of the rest.

We do, however, still have problems. A renegade element of evil capitalists, who make up perhaps no more than 25 percent of our population, have the wrong-headed idea that they can --- by work, education, innovation, skill and guts --- do a better job for themselves and their families than the government can do.

To fight this dastardly, subversive group, our politicians demonize them at every opportunity and tax the daylights out of them. We can force them to pay more taxes than all of the rest of us put together.

If they financially survive the taxes and then die, we will seize most of their estate so their families cannot benefit.

We are winning! Keep the faith! Vote Gore!!!

I'd like it if California was allowed to leave the Union.  I'm quite fed up with subsidizing so many poor interior states.  Not only are they poor, but they are typically ungrateful and very, very hostile.

California, Texas, New York, Florida, Michigan and a few other states subsidize the rest of the USA.  If California were independant, taxes in California would go down and we'd get more for what we did pay.  They same is true of the other states I mentioned.  All of those states get far fewer tax dollars back than we give.

Yeah, until the rest of the Western States cut-off California's "stolen fair and square" Colorado River water supply.  Then most of So Cal will dry up and blow away.  Good Riddance to the "Megalopolis of the Future".    "More of what we pay for"??  What, more freeways, more welfare, and more toejam-for-brains Lefties in the State Legislature??

As for NY, the Southern States can just cut-off the state's supply of fuel oil, gasoline, and natural gas, not to mention food supply.  Bet whether those Limousine Liberals in the Hamptons would freeze or starve first??

And Florida???  The state exports oranges and flowers and virtually imports everything else,  including bazillions of old Yankees too stupid to drive a car or vote.
And South Florida belongs to Cuba.

As for Michigan, having to live there is punishment enough.  In fact, Michigan would make a fine location for a Prison Colony.  Just build a fence around the entire state.

And last, there's Texas.  What part of Oklahoma is Texas???

There are a lot more than 2 Californias easymo.

Southern California - Stretches from About Santa Barbara, South to the border and inland about 50 miles. This is "Lala land and the location of a huge percentage of our population. Also a strong Republican stronghold in most areas and a Republican majority.

Inland Empire / Desert Southwest - Follow the Eastern border of California from about Trona to the southern border, and west to the western border of San Bernardino or Riverside County. This is the great Mojave Desert, and Agricultural areas to the south in Imperial County. Very Western socially, and Politically conservative.

Central State - Lompoc to Big Sur on the West to the Sierra Nevadas on the East. Agricultural and very Conservative. This area includes most of the great Central Valley of California and where a lot of your food is grown right here. This is where I went to School, and my University was the NCAA Rodeo Champion. Huge fields of everything from cotton to rice to avocados.

North Central - Monterey to Marin County on the west, Tahoe and Sacramento on the East. This is the "Liberal California". Aside from a small pocket in and around Los Angeles, this is the Stronghold of the minority Democratic Party in California.

Northern California - Everything North of Marin and Tahoe. Might as well be Oregon. Only it's prettier.

Trona!

Good gawd... not Trona.

I've read graffiti on bathroom walls here in Ridgecrest... "My girlfriend asked me to kiss her where it stinks... so I took her to Trona."

:)

Oh... and coming back from Vegas yesterday, decided to drive around in Hinkley just to see if the movie, Erin Brockovich, got it right. My gawd... what a poor pitiful place. It's so far removed from the typical Californian ideal, it's unbelievable.

Of course... Choosing between Trona or Hinkley would be difficult if one could disregard that little water table issue.
