Title: Clouds in AH
Post by: Revvin on October 06, 2002, 04:09:19 PM
Hitech recently said in an interview how he wanted heavy bombers to be used more against strat targets than airfields, well that's fine and dandy but if bombers are to be encouraged to hit these targets then why are they covered completely by cloud 90-95% of the time by a huge blanket of cloud around 15k?

I like the fact we have clouds and it would add immersion to the sim to have to go around again if it was a random occurance but it's not. My squad regularly plan missions to hit enemy strat targets and 90-95% of the time the target is obscurred as described above. The wind does not seem to move these clouds and once you're over cloud it extends liek a thick blanket obscurring most of the start targets with no breaks or holes in the cloud that could be used by the buffs to perhaps either go around again or try for another target.  In WW2 they had meteorogical reports to look at so at least before they even launched they knew what to expect I don't know if there is a way to mimic that in AH or at least fix the clouds so that it's not just a thick blanket that hovers over the strat objects of a country.

well ,if your squad is "planning" a strat  bombing run ,as part of the planning you should send a fast recon plane over the target to get a weather report.
you know in RL they had a primary target and a secondary target if the 1st one was over cast.
i think the clouds never go below 15k so you could go to target high then drop down under clouds for the bomb run

now, i am not a buff type, but this isnt real life, its a sim. the buff types sure invest alot of time alting to a target...having to fly a buff to a secondary because clouds are there [again] will not encourage more use of buffs. I for one encourage buff guys to up for us fighter guys (just kidding, sorta :D ).

Cloud overcast cover is really bad.

For one, the lighting makes everything fade into the greyness (and me being color blind and only using white icons for enemy becomes even worse).

Then its the FPS issues.I have a GF4 128 now with an AMD1.4ghz 512 ram and sometimes the fps does drop dramatically in short burps, i dont even wanna think how its like for others.

So i would say, change the overcast for the "puff" overcast cloud cover. Much more immersive in my opinion, less fps issues and gives view of groundside to buffs.

Perhaps they could find a way to show the stormfront locations on the clipboard.   This would simulate weather reports.  It'd be a useful tool for bomber pilots who often take off far away from the target while at the same time wouldn't affect the fighter guys at all.

A fine idea, perhaps it could be incorporated with the wind button on the clipboard somehow.

john9001> I have run a fighter over to the target but it's not a problem of 'if' the target is obscured as it is obscurred the majority of the time, the clouds don't seem to move and I do plan every mission with a secondary target in mind.

Yes good idea to have something on the clipboard, I would'nt expect it to give perfect reports but anything would help but the clouds still need fixing. Right now that report would constantly say 'cloud cover over almost every strat object' We still need these cloud's to be a little smaller but perhaps have more of them moving around so that there is a chance of cloud obscurring the target but you do have a chance of perhaps going around again and trying your luck with the cloud size/movement.
