Title: I told you I'd be back :)
Post by: newguy on October 09, 2002, 02:20:41 AM
Ok, so I have a map that works (YEEE HAAW) and now Im tooling with the planes, learning how to use the gimp etc. I was also able to get my reskinned plane to appear on my terrain, my only question is, and I know its already been answered but I cant find where,  how do you get the skins to go on the planes the right way? It looks as though my plane threw up its skin all over itself, and I now have areas which I havnt touched (I am doing the plane in little bits at a time) appearing in strange places, such as the underwing area on the fusalage lol. I have heard people talking about inverting the image, but I'm not really sure what this entails. Would someone be kind enough to resupply this information?
This is a really cool tool. When I get done with this plane, I'd really like to look at what can be done to the terrain, though from reading NUTTZ's posts, it'll all be done by the time I get to it :) Thanks to all that got me this far

When you use the "save texture" button, the skins it spits out are upside down.

Flip the image vertically and it'll look right.

Thanks for the replies guys. In the gimp I rotated 180 degrees and for the most part, this worked. It still looks as though part of the fusalage is back wards. The color looks right, but the numbers on the plane and the iron cross seem out of place, and in the case of the number, backwards. How is  it possible to have switched only part of the plane? I have a screen shot, so you can get a better idea of what I'm talking about. Try not to laugh, I just started :)

you must flip each bitmap (the whole bitmap) vertically to have it display properly.

Woo Hoo I got it! For those of you new to the GIMP, I had to rotate the whole thing 180 degrees and then flip it. OK, one last question, and then I promise I'll be quiet for a while. Where are the tops of the wings? I cant seem to find them. Anybody want to point me in the right direction?

depends on the plane.
FWIW there are multiple bitmaps for each aircraft.

which plane are you working on ?

the 109g6. Also I was wondering, how do you guys know by looking at the bmp what exactly it is you are working on. I mean the small things such as the inside of wheel, the g6 bulge, the tulip, etc. Is it all trial and error, or is there a master list somewhere? :D One other thing, when is thor gonna do the draft :D

109G62.bmp is the top of the wings..
as for what's what in the files.. your guess is as good as any I think :)

that's why we need layered templates !

Cool thnx Wlfgng. And I see that the draft has started. Layered would be nice. maybe the original will give me some clues as to what is where.

Hmm, where abouts did you find that file? I looked in the available shapes section of the TE, and in the shpfilter file but couldnt find 109G62.bmp. I didnt see any plane with a 2 after them, so I must be unaware of a certain file

yep.. finally (draft) :)

let's see a nice Assassin G6!  oh yea!

oops.. just Save the Texture for the G6, then look in your SAVEDTX folder where the other bitmaps are.. you'll find the 109G62.bmp file there.

so after copying the file from SAVEDTX file, I can just past it into my texsrc file and go at it? Or do I have to make 109G62 file  show up in the available shapes section of the TE?

G6 or G10.. love 'em both !
yeah, edit it and save it to TEXSRC and when you do the BUILD it'll be included in that terrain.
just load up AH, choose your terrain and go to the hanger, pick it anc fly around to check it out !

and no, you won't see a G62 object.. that's just the name of one of the bitmaps that make up the G2 skin.

Ok, another question. I saved my edited file 109G62.bmp to the TEXSRC file. However, when I go to the TE and try to build, an error occurs and shuts me down. The only change I made to this file, aside from the color was to change it from grayscale to RBG. This was the only way I could find to make any colors work. Was this a bad idea, or have I overlooked another step. Does it need to say 109G62 in my add shape section of the TE? Other than this little problem, the skin is coming along quite nicely.

once you're finished editing in RGB (which is a must), convert it back to Indexed 256 color.  file size should be 66kb.

oh, and when converting back to 256 color make sure to preserve original colors so it doesn't turn to 'spots'  :)
