Title: Exercise Poll
Post by: fdiron on October 09, 2002, 10:34:31 AM
About 6 months ago I took a poll to see who exercised frequently.  Lets check in again to see who had the will-power to maintain.

Fdiron
Main form of exercise- Running (3 to 8 mile runs four to seven times a week).  My running has suffered as a result of college though.

Secondary form of exercise- Manual laborer at UPS.

I only run when:

1.) Being chased by the police
2.) A beer truck goes by
3.) when flying a P-51

wait a sec, I don't fly the 51, hmmm go figure. :D

Was doing 4 times a week, 3.5 miles.  Cut back to 3 times a week, 3.5 miles to accomodate playing more volleyball.  I can't do both in the same day, and need a day to recover after a tournament or long race.

Last night I ran 13 miles in 1:30:57. The night before I ran 12 miles. You could say I am serious. ;)

I have a group of guys I am pulling together to train for sub-17 minute 5Ks in the spring.

I can drive 5k in under 17 minutes.

Actually I walk 2x a day with my dog, I teach my daughter basketball almost every day (she signed up for the freshman team), and I have dropped almost 10 lbs. over the past 6 months. Currently 6'1" and about 215lbs.

5 or 6 out of every 7 days I do 5-6 miles in about 1:05 to 1:15. That's some quick walking mixed with jogging. All this done with a Polar Heart Monitor strapped on so that I stay in the 70-75% aerobic zone.

Much more running than that and my knees start barking. But not as much as the dogs if I don't take them along when I go. ;)

Some bicycling thrown in additionally on the nice days. Schwinnn AirDyne on the rainy days... boy the dogs HATE that. They see my legs moving but we ain't going anywhere. They watch about 2 minutes and go lay down somewhere.

I don't remember if I said anything in the first go around, but I'm still going to the gym, but I had some health issues in Aug, I'm working my way back up :(

I use the treadmill or stair machine for 15 minutes, then lift weights for about 30-45 minutes 2-3 times a week.

Well, seven months ago I decided enough was enough. I was up to 288lbs and feeling like crap. I started eating a lot less and hitting the weights 2-3/week. I'm now down to 255lbs and feeling/looking much better. In fact yesterday two teenage girls in the car next to me waved and said hi to me. Now being a 35 yr old fart that made me feel pretty damn good! :D

My goal is to drop down to 240ish. Being 6'3" I think it would be a good weight for me.

I started the treadmill/bowflex thing august 1st.

20 min on treadmill 5 times a week (in the morning)
40 min on the bowflex 3 times a week (after work)
I alternate the other 3 days with jogging or stretching with one day off.

The scotch consumption has been reduced to almost nothing.
The weight isnt exactly melting off and I have only lost 5 pounds or so even with a diet. I do feel much better though.

Raub does not have a choice there Ripsnort. The guy is in the Army and just before the Con he was transferred from Hawaii to Oklahoma. He might not make that next PT test though since he and Kratzer have joined the FDB's. :D

As for me I try to maintain the shape and size from my last season of college football. That was in 1994 and I was 295. I have not been as successfull as I should have. Then I was 295 with 12% body fat but now I am 280 + many percentage points higher in the body fat and don't lift/run as much as I should.

Although I still get out and play flag football, basketball, softball and coach my son in baseball, soccer, football and basketball. But  I have made a promise to get back down to 250 and under 18% body fat by next May when our 2nd child is due.

Exercise of the brain is as important as exercise of
the muscles. As we grow older, it's important that we
keep mentally alert. The saying: "If you don't use it,
you will lose it" also applies to the brain, so.........

Below is a very private way to gage your loss or
non-loss of intelligence. So take the following  test
presented here and determine if you are losing it or still got it upstairs.

OK, relax, clear your mind and....... begin.

1.  What do you put in a toaster?

1 rink so the only ice time we adults can get, without being in the day league, is like 11:30 friday night and Sunday evening.

Friday?  not
Sunday? yeah right

at least in Denver I could skate at a decent hour (ice) ...
like weeknights 6-10 or so.  kinda miss that.

Of course I can bike the mountain and ski the mountain so I'm not missing out on excercise.

Zigrat if you are in your late 20's and on upward you will have an easier time gaining the weight. Alot of the reason is the decrease in metabolism within the body and for that reason you need to be careful what you are eating while you are trying to get bigger.

I never would have thought that my studies in Exercise Science, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology would have helped anyone in a flight sim BBS format. :D

Yeah, I know, bad form. :D

I have since stopped lifting, started running again, and lost 30lbs. To be honest, I feel healthier at a lighter weight than when I am big and can push a lot of weight.

Edit: The film is something I am throwing together for my applications class. They have to use flash to create a movie selector and player. This was a film I had on hand to, ironically, check my form while I lifted.

I use a Polar, too.  I have the range between 140bpm and 170bpm to recognize when I'm warm and when I'm overexerting, and try to keep my pace around 160bpm.  30 minutes at this pace will get me around 4 miles or so.  I'm not really sure because I didn't really follow the odometer closely when I measured it out in my cherished 1998 Toyota 4runner...that was mauled by dogs trying to get to a cat on the roof!

Zig, I started at 155, took 3 years to get to 215 lbs.  Now I'm just into maintaining, and my current weight is running at about 195-200.  In order to keep that kind of weight on, you'll have to bulk lift for 6 months out of the year, thats if your metabolism is anything like mine.

Cool thread, I must have missed the first one :)

I lift 3 times a week, and depending on my goals do cardio 4 to 6 times a week for 30 to 60 mins a pop. Its hard during the summer when Im  busy, and miss the odd day, but I feel guilty about it :) The best shape ive been in was 190lbs at 7% BF. Now that was a calper test so it might not have been exactly on, but it was close.  This was a year ago.  Since then I had a very bad ankle sprain, which led to back problems and only recently got back into gear. I ballooned up to 215, and not much of it muscle im afraid :( Im now 5'8'' and 204, so I have been making progress :)

IN an effort to find more workout time, Ive been  building my own gym. Ive collected some stuff from classified adds "olimpic bar, bench, 300lbs of weights, assorted dumbells" and am in the process of building myself a power rack. Gona let the gym membership laps, less driving =more workout time.

Enjoy it while you can ;) Most people obtain results very quickly when they first start lifting, after a while you will have to work really hard at it. And what you eat is just as if not more important as lifting. Sounds like your naturally skinny, so you will probably want to increase those calories "not junk, good stuff and lots of it" and lift heavy " heavy= as much weight as you can do 6 to 8 reps with proper form "

BTW dont forget the warmup set before you rack that bar to the point of breaking :)

And dont use kieren as an example of proper way to do biceps curls :D

6'4" 280 lbs. currently with a 40" waist and to damn much body fat. :D

Goal for the day our 2nd child is due:

250 lbs. and ~10-15% body fat.

Here is my workout schedule also.

Monday:
2 miles on the track plus playing basketball then into the gym for full lower body workout (quads, hamstrings, calfs).

Tuesday:
basketball again with only abdominal work and stretching.

Wednesday:
Full Upper body workout then 2 miles on the track.

Thursday:
basketball plus taking my son's soccer team through practice.

Friday:
Heavy Weight low reps upper and lower body workout.

Saturday and Sunday are light days with running only due to coaching the soccer team and then having plenty of church activities to deal with on Sunday.

This is my "get my butt" back in the gym workout. After being out of the gym since 1998 this has been a real eye-opener. I woke up this morning and could not straighten my arms out because I finished up with my bicep workout. I was laughing my butt off till my wife reached down and pulled them straight. My son had just walked into our bedroom and he was laughing at me for not being able to straighten my arms out even with my pushing with my opposite hand.

Yeah, it was pathetic, sorry 'bout that. Still, as a never-was I struggle to prove to myself I have some value left as the virile young stud my wife married.

Anyway, I found this thread far more positive and constructive than the average AH flamefests we've had as of late. YMMV.

It may be "gay" but it is a hell of a lot better than trashing each other in text as we tend to do in these forums. It also is a good thing to find out who you might trade some ideas on different workouts with. As usual Dowding your input has been noted and cast aside. (Lets see here my tongue in cheek and sarcasm meter are fully pegged out here I hope that he gets it!)

Thanks for participating and we'll see you in the AH skies hopefully sooner than you want. :D

Tah Gut,

I played college ball here in my home state (Alabama) at UAB from 1991 through 1994. I was on the first NCAA sanctioned team back then and we were all a bunch of almost Division 1A players that got promised scholarships in two years. We moved up to Div. 1AA in 1993 and everyone that stuck it out for those first two years got a full or 3/4 scholarship. Of the first day in 1991 the freshman class was 100 players with others like me coming out of junior college filling in the other 40 or so spots.

When I came out of junior college I had three years left due to a medical redshirt. I got redshirted in 1993 for an ankle injury that caused me to have surgery on it (I don't know how they got me another year of eligibility but they did). Plus I tore my right ACL off my femur in 1991.

I never made it past the try outs on campus for the NFL, CFL, NFL Europe and then a couple of years ago for the XFL. The XFL was just because I thought I could do it again. I do remember the USFL team that Oakland had. Here in Alabama we had the Birmingham Stallions and they were loaded with some players that went on to the NFL and did really well.
