And how do I make it stop?
-
its either a very clever pop-up made to look like one of those DOS instant message, or its a real one.
Do you have a good firewall installed? update it!
-
LOL.........call em up, get your Doctorate within days.:)
-
Here's what it is: http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/answerstips/story/0,24330,3374542,00.html
@#$@#$@# Micro$haft.
-
That's pretty cool, I've never seen that before. What site did you get that at? It's possible that you have some spyware on your PC (GATOR, KAZAA, BONIZI Buddy) that's 'helping' them find you.
-
Dingbat is right.
You probably have some sort of spyware trojan broadcasting your IP.
Make sure you have a good firewall (Norton/Zone Alarm) installed and updated.
-
I'll tell you what that is.....that's an awesome educational opportunity my man!

What the heck does that have to do with the price of beans on friday night?
Just cause win98 doesn't have the messenger service doesn't meaning they can't use winpopup on those boxes.

Actually, you can disable it in Windows XP.
In Windows 98 SE, you cant.
So your reason for hanging just became a reason to upgrade.

Animal, 98 doesn't have net send just winpopup :)

Try this spyware killer app, finds and kills em and its free
Adaware (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7423,00.asp)
You'll be surprised what it finds
Oh yea and stay away from the pr0n sites :D

Read the article I posted guys. It's not a popup ad. It's not spyware. It's somebody scanning IP's and sending messages via the built-in Messenger Service. To stop it all you have to do is disable the Messenger Service. Adaware or closing port 139 won't prevent it.

All you have to do is edit the correct Win98 INF and it becomes an option in the Windows Add/Remove software applet. :D
Win98SE can be made to install in under 70mb if you know how, Win Me is around 120mb if you know how to use INF hacks.
One of these days I'll get to work on gutting that bloated POS XP.

Hey Weazel, I just moved again, and I found my PDPI gamecard that I promised you many moons ago. You still want it? Email me: funkedup@raf303.org
-
I was wondering how long it was going to take for someone started using net send to spam windows users.
I used to work with a guy who would use it rather than IM or email and it always annoyed the hell out of me so I now I always disbale messaging.
-
I no longer have any ISA slots to put it in. ;)
I use my mobos integrated game port instead of the POS SBLive port I was using when I asked about the PDPI.
-
Ahh well. Sorry it took me 2 years to find the damned thing. It got packed inside a box inside a box. I was packing some stuff the other day and I'm like "what the heck is this box" and I opened it and there's the shiny new PDPI still in the anti-static bag.

guessing random IPs would be a pain in the ass. it's probably getting help from something else. that's all I'm saying. Still you didn't say what pron site you visited to get that :D
-
I didn't visit anything. It just popped up.
I run Adaware and netstat all the time. I don't think I have any unwanted passengers on board. :)
-
dingbat, guessing random IPs is NOT a pain in the ass.
Just pick a block used by a broadband service, and broadcast to all of them. very easy to do.
and if you have a broadband connection, you better have some sort of security, because it's not just fake diplomas that are scanning your ports.
-
Guys, that's just the Microsoft Messenger service. It's in all versions of Windows NT, 2000, and XP. It's not spyware or anything else. To use it, just go to the command prompt and type "net send "
To kill it, either block the port or stop the service.
(This is actually kind of a useful thing for computers on a network to be able to send messages to each other.)
-
Just rename the file that Messenger resides in and Windows can not locate it to even use it. The only time I open up Messenger is when I absolutely have to work with a clients WinXP Pro machine. Till then my formerly named program folder of Messenger sits in a folder renamed to "I might use it once in a while but I hope not."
-
Got XP? I got that too! i closed out of it and havent gotten it since, *Due to the fact we dont turn off are comp*
Im telling you there spying on us and the goverment realizes we aint that smart afterall :D
just close out of it and make yer comp hibernate instead of turning it off.
Dont send error problems either thats a hoax, u can be offline not even connected and it sends it lol

Here is a link to a story about the exact same thing that was mentioned above. It also has a link to the company that is selling the software that allows the mass email crowd to send to those IP's they have gathered.
Maybe its time for a law suit against the maker of the software.
Crap Mass email IP broadcasting stuff. (http://news.com.com/2100-1001-962483.html?tag=dd.ne.dht.nl-sty.0)

In XP you have to go into Services and manually turn it off. Just stopping the service with the single click is not working. That sets it to "automatic" for its startup and it will restart when it is "needed".
-
I deleted whole messenger directory. It haven't bothered me anymore.
-
I definately recommend adaware from lavasoft, u wont belive what those scumbags will put on your PC, and, never, ever eat beans on friday!
