AtGuard (http://ftp://ftp.redcom.ru/pub/support/windows/firewall/ATGUARD.EXE) firewall blocks cookies, pop-ups, kills ani-gifs & banners, provides User Agent privacy, and "stealth" against port scanners.
Symantec bought WRQ out a few years back, Nortons Internet Security software is based on WRQ code.

Or just grab a copy of mozilla.
it has various options to stop javascript from doing annoying things, such as opening unrequested windows, moving windows, etc.
oh, and hosting isn't as expensive as some of these people like pretend. They set up sites, get some hits, and think they can pay for it by running a few ads, instead of out of thier own pocket. It starts off as a hobby, but becomes a way to possibly make some money.
The best way I've seen to do this, isn't ads at all. With a site that people enjoy, and rely on, that isn't Just Another Website" can easily pay for it's hosting by simply accepting donations, donations will make far more than any ads, and you can convince a user to chip in $1 much easier than you can get that dollar from ads.

Thanks Sandman. I thought I was the only one holding such an opinion...
... so that's me and Mr. Crenshaw. Anyone else want to join our club? :p :D

SimHQ is an execellent site. They get a lot of traffic so it doesn't surpise me that they have to resort to this kind of thing to pay for it. If that's what it takes to keep SimHQ going then that's fine with me: particularly as I can block pop-ups :D

I've got a love-hate relationship with popup stoppers. The company that I use to host my webpage uses a pop up control panel. Unfortunately, suspending the blocker doesn't fix the problem and allow the CP to come up. It has to be completely de-installed.
So... every few months I get fed up and re-install the countermeasures, just like today.

As I understand from my next-door neighbor, media marketing corporate choad that he is... they don't get paid if you block the ad.
