Flying at 1000 feet at 450 ias over an enemy airbase, you can be pinged.
Enough said.
Ack monkeys are bad enough with the inevitable WAVE of M16s that show just before a field is taken. Somebody get HTC to make the ack at a field mannable, and then KILL OTTO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the ack is pretty well tuned now. It WILL kill you if you bore in straight at it, but it is also easily avoided. I have killed six acks in a Spit IX and lived to RTB. Killing them with a cannon Hog or Jug is almost too easy.
As for the horde of M-16's -- just think of them as player-controlled ack. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

My vote goes with Popeye. I think the ack is set up very well now. It keeps an enemy on guard, but isnt quite as good as it was when it seemed to be lazar guided radar controlled.
M16s add a fun dimension to the game, and are easy to kill with a few placed rounds, and easy to stop with a will placed couple bombs on the VH.

I learned a way to take out 4 or 5 acks on 1 guns run (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) It works best in the p47. Just dive real fast, start shooting when your close to the ground. Then simply drag your gunsight around to as many acks as you can on that pass. They go down rather quickly (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

There is only 1 rule with ack in this game:
Straight Line = death
Keep turning and you'll be ok. I think if I had a machine gun and you were flying in a straight line... I could figure out how much to lead you pretty quickly.

The ack is still doing things that even a modern radar-guided automatic gun would have trouble doing. I agree with XX - let's get rid of otto.

The only things I would like to see with the ack is making it a bit more human. Make it "suprise-able" by lowlevel attacks, and give it a target handoff delay from gun to gun. Also, possibly give the guns a set ammount of ammo then a breif pause for reloading. Of course, manable ack from the tower would rock too.

IMO, its fine as is, any less would greatly encourage vulching. I've learned to take out 7 of 8 ack in one sortie (Thanks Zig!) ...the 8th one always gets me! Mental block me thinks. If you're going to vulch, you're going to have to develope skills to learn to take ack down first.

P47-30 = 5 dead acks at least. I love ack the way it is. If you screw up it kills you, but if you use your head you kill it.

Sidenote: Historically speaking,I can't recollect how many accounts of fighter/bombers that only made "one-pass" on enemy airfields due to the fact that it was suicide to do otherwise.(unless of course it had been previously 'softened' by buffs)

I think it would be fun to be able to "take over" for otto whenever someone gets the urge to do so.
So, if I wanted to try my luck at bagging a group of buffs ranging back & forth over my field, I could type a command to jump in otto's chair and start flinging 88's around myslef. When I've had enough, I leave and Otto resumes duty.

Taking out the Otto gunners would cripple any side that had fewer people logged on. Even with equal forces, all I'd have to do is go attack so base in the backfield while everybody was focused on the hot zones and I'd be able to do whatever I wanted to the field.
There simply arn't enough people, nor is sitting in a AAA battery interesting enough, to replace Otto with human players.

You have to practice at killing ack and there are several styles of killing ack with a fighter.I still have no idea how my wingman does it.I get kilt everytime untill i do it my way even still i get killed every couple of times.

I approach it almost vertically, using an A/C that has a good roll rate (P47/F4U) , then start shooting at about 5000 feet and walk the bullets in, I never see the ack die,(I get report in text buffer) since once I start seeing hit sprites on the ground, I pull a hard G man. to egress to prevent from being shot. Sometimes the ack gets me, sometimes I get it. Getting better at putting the odds in my favor, I haven't completely taken ack down on a small forward field by myself, but have come damn close. Zig does it consistantly.

I love straffing but I donīt find it so easy as it seems for some of you. Sometimes I kill sometimes I die at first try ;-) Anyay, I donīt think itīs necessary to change anything the way acks work.
But I think it might help everybody if some of us could record and show their films straffing small, medium and large fields.
As a matter of fact, I was thinking about creating a site in whih we might have some good films showing some important aspects of game play, such as bombing, maneuvers, merge etc.

Take a P47-30, load with 10 rockets. Climb to enemy base, to about 10K. When directly above ack, select rockets (backspace). Zoom in and put the gunsight pipper right on the ack. When you see the first sign of yellow, hit "b" and pull out. You will see the buffer announcement if your aim was true.
Zoom back up to perch, and repeat as necessary. One P47 can kill 10 acks without being touched in this manner, and the hangars are easily strafed after that. Try it and see if I'm wrong. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

The ack is still too capable in a historical sense. It might be good for gameplay, but it's just not right if we are trying to simulate the real thing.
