My new computer came with Windows Me.
In order to "cure" my system of CTDs, I have tried installing Windows 98. Never got it to install properly. I also tried Win Me again a couple of times because I thought that maybe the 98 CD had a fatal scratch. Me wouldn't load properly either. Both had all kinds of errors.
Both the 98 and Me Cds have a few very slight scratches, but I figured the HD was bad (I have other reasons to think so as well).
So I just installed the new Wester Digital 40GB 7200 rpm HDD.
Win 98 is porked on it already. Just re-formatted and trying Me.
Could my errors be coming from a bad CD?
Errors:
Fatal Exception OD has occured at 014F:00003834
&
Invalid Vxd dynamic link called vwn32(01) + 00000714 to device 0009 service 1
&
Registry repair results:
Windows found an error in your system files and was unable to fix them, try deleting some files ... bla bla bla.
---------------------------------
My system:
AMD Athlon processor 1400MHz, K7AMA Release 05/15/2001
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200
256 MB of RAM
File system 32 bit
Virtual Memory 32 bit
Sec Slave drive ATAPI Incompatible (press F1 to resume, I gotta do this every time on start up.)
new power supply
Hitache DVD/CD
Thanks,
BTW, I', a moron when it comes to puter stuff, so please spell out the obvious if you have any advice.
(Windows Me is installing now, will update soon)

I use ME and ive never had an AH problem with it. Ive been pretty lucky with ME in general I guess as most will tell you its not the best gaming platform without a lot of work.
I dont do a lot to it but it all seems to work fine.
As for your CD, I dont know. But as one computer dummy to another, i thought id get in now before the XP geeks rattle your cage about ME :)

Me is now running!
:)
I'll see how everything runs on Me before I think about another OS. Too poor to throw money around.

Drop ur system dwn to 1 stick of ram, not sure how many ya have but try em all one at a time see if sys comes up alright, if ya got a bad stick of ram anywhere in the bunch ur screwed till ya get it out of there, if ya cant get it to work and can get on line dwnload DocMemory and test each stick alone in the first slot and see what ya get.
-
Also sounds like you have a device in your ATA (IDE 3 or 4 ATA/66) that should be running in the IDE slot 1 or 2, fast harddrives ATA/66 etc would go in slot IDE 3 or 4, CD's would go in slot IDE 1 or 2, put ur cd is the fast ATA/66 and your system isnt going to like it at all. You should also use the 80 wire ribbon cable for any ATA/66 and the 40 wire cable for the regular ATA/33 cd type of devices they look similat but are very different, the 40 wire ribbon cable will look a little larger or coarse like.

Never used ME so I'm not sure about the following !
If ME is NTFS you cant install Fat32 over it ( Win98 se ), you must FDISK and reformat if it is NTFS to get it to load FAT32.
But make sure you have that new Winchester drive in the IDE 3 or 4 slot on your mother board and are using the 80 wire ribbon cable for it.
-
You must also use the shorting straps ( little black shorts on the back of the hard drive ) to tell your system which hard drive is primary and which one is secondary, if their both pinned for primary the sys is gonna have problems. So check that also !
-
Windows ME can't use NTFS, can't see it either. Only NT, 2000 and XP can use NTFS.
The problems you have won't come from a bad CD, if the CD is bad you wouldn't be able to install it.
Sec Slave drive ATAPI Incompatible (press F1 to resume, I gotta do this every time on start up.)
Ok, how many HD's do you have in it? I am guessing this has got to do with teh DVD though.
Secondary slave drive incompatible, if I am not wrong on this, it might be this that cause some sort of a conflict in Windows and thus is your problem to blue screen of death and various other error messages.
I am not sure it is the CD/DVD, however, if the problems don't go away, it is worth a try to remove that DVD and replace it with a normal CD (take the one from old computer for example).
Don't know if you build your computers your self, I do, never and problems with this kind of stuff.
I think I read in the other forum that you order it cheap from some internet place, I'd be carefull with this, not only do you have a good chance of getting stuff that's not compatible with eachother, but you may also get stuff that isn't really the "real stuff". Piracy doesn't only occure in the software world, there are allso lots of copys in the hardware buisiness that just type a good name such as AMD on a bad CPU.
Dare spend some more money on, it will be a bit more expensive but you're almost always sure to get the goos stuff. Best way it to buy it from a small computer store or similair where you can get personal help.

eskimo2 !!! , check the power suply !!!!! if you use your old 200 W then no miracle !
with amd and ge4 you need at last strong 300 W and up !!!
experienced this kinda problems , the power suply was not inaf strong !!!

Thanks Wilbus,
I've been wondering about the DVD as well. Your casting even greater doubt on it too. For $40 I should probably replace it too.

The instal guide talked about that. it had a default pin/jumper.
My choices were: Cable Select (CSEL) - Default setting Requires special cable, included...
and single... If the drive you are installing is theonly drive on the system, which it is, but it doesn't explain that cable sellect is not the only either... so I'm not sure...

I did the FAT32 thing and the HDD is plugged into the blue one like the install guide said.

It's got 1 stick of 256 RAM.

Did you run a good memory checking program? I have one that creates a boot floppy and it runs for a while thoroughly checking ram. I found that one of my 2 256 meg DDR sticks was bad this way.
Also, if a western digital drive is the only drive on an ide channel (the only one plugged into it's cable), you may need to remove ALL jumpers from the master/slave/csel jumper block. Dunno why they do that, but it's happened to me.
Check to see if the hard drive has it's own power supply cable, not shared cable with fans and such.
Try a bios update for your mobo if you haven't already done so.
-
Eskimo,
Make sure primary ide= hd set as master on pins
secondary ide= dvd set as master on cable
each device should be set as master on its own cable
in the bios make sure ide stuff set to auto
make sure red stripe on cables go to pin1 on devices(usually towards power connector)
if that dont fix dvd (atapi prob) then i'd bet device is junk
Oh, and use win98se, not that junk ME

* No, but I only have one memory stick

I'll try that next..

Eskimo, I run ME for gaming and 2000 for graphic programs and all programs that needs a good stable platform such as 3D Software (Gmax and 3D Studio). However, 2000 is slower for games.
For games I run Windows ME and get about 10 fps better then in 2000. 98 is JUNK IMO, ME better, faster startup and slightly more stable (blue screen of death is still common thouhg).
I've gone through almost every Microsoft OS from DOS to present, early windows, late windows, 95 and 98, 95 upgraded and 98 upgraded. Best OS you can get for the games is ME or XP. Unfortunatly XP won't install on my computer since I changed Main board.
Best microsoft OS is 2000 and XP Professional (XP home sucks).
Best for gaming is either ME or XP IMO.

Unfortunately, no one agrees. Many folks in different threads are saying the exact opposite of each othe rin regards to Win. OS's and gameplay. I think I'll go try banging my head against the wall, maybe I'll feel better after that.
Seriously though, thanks for you input. I was just hoping for a universal agreement that one Win. OS was worth a damn.

Eskimo, I think ME is better, it's a bit faster (much faster startup).
However, from gaming purpose, there isn't much difference between 98 or ME. If you have 98, use it, if you have ME, use it. It is more about taste here.
However, before you can use any of them, you must get the computer to work proparly, the porblem is most likely in the settings for the DVD.
The DVD should be placed on SECONDARY IDE, and be set as SECONDARY MASTER (it is all alone at that IDE and thus it MUST be MASTER)
If it is set as SECONDARY SLAVE and alone on the IDE things will F*** up.
Check inside the computer, hard to help you over internet like this as I can't see inside your computer.

Sounds like your getting corruption during the install.
Make sure you have smartdrv.exe on your WinBlows setup floppy.
Boot from it and type FDISK /MBR , then do a quick format by typing FORMAT C:/Q , when done name your partition DISK1_PART1 and reboot using the setup floppy.
Choose start computer with CD support, at the a:\ prompt type SMARTDRV , C:\ , then type MD C:\WIN9X .
Type CD WIN9X , then type COPY D:\WIN9X\*.*
(Assuming d:\ is your CD drive, substitute the correct drive letter if not)
When the copy completes install from that directory by typing setup.exe.

OK, I actually think I'm back where I started before I tried to "fix" my system.
AH will run, but 4 out of 5 times that I try to start it, I get an instant CTD. I managed to play offline a couple of times, one CTD after about 10 minutes, and I exited after 5 minutes the second time on.
I think my problem is the K7AMA MoBo, or maybe the Ram.

if the crash ocure when using intesive 3d aplication or just anithing above
the problem is ,sory but again the powersuply, but this time at AGP port what not give inaf for hungry GE4 ;)
eskimo , try it run with some realy lame agp card to test stability

Have you checked your heat sink? Check your sys to see how hot the cpu is getting when on the net and again when playing AH, you may not have enough heat sink and fan for graphic intensive number crunching, just a thought.
