WinME is the WORST release of windows since uh, well, it's worse than everything back to and including 3.1.
98 is almost as bad. Win95OSR2 was the only decent win95 release.
Win2k/Xp is the only way to go if you want stability.

Eskimo,
Win ME works fine for gaming and is my preffered M$ OS for such. Yes all M$ OS's suck. If you know the tricks to make each work they will get the job done. With ME first thing is go into msconfig and uncheck all the box's in start up. Defrag and scan disk before loading any new applications, each time you load one. Only allow necessary programs to run in the background (intrusion protection, anti-virus is all I allow) for normal operation. Yes turn off everything else, even system tray. Contrary to popular belief system tray is not necessary. The main culprit for problems with 98 & ME is all that crap running in the background. That crap corrupts applications upon loading them and causes the problems. You can tell the differance when you get a clean install or a corrupted one.
Yes win2000 is more stable but not as good for gaming in my experiance. I have not been able to use the higher resolutions with win2000.
One nice thing with ME is that when the OS does take a crap some times you can reload it and just have to do the updates, your applications will still be there, saves time. Unfortunatly all MS OS's gradualy degrade. This is done on purpose so that you will purchase the newer OS's when they come out.
Wish AH like most of the games were not forced through contractual agreements with MS to port for MS OS's only. They get financial & and other incentives for signing on the dotted line. This is how M$ has been able to maintan a monopoly. Would be nice to be able to run AH on a Linux box. Yes I know utilizing wine with Linux you can run AH, but its not perfected enough in my opinion.

A lot of the win2k/xp vs 98 depends on your hardware. Older systems will most likely benefit from being run on win98. But anything with a gf3/4, on a mb/cpu made in the past year, you're probably better off with 2k/xp. Unless you like a program crashing and bringing down the whole machine.
I don't think microsoft gives any incentive to develop for windows, other than windows itself.(DirectX, etc)
The people microsoft screws into keeping thier monopoly going are the manufacturers. Most of them buy OEM versions of windows, at a discounted price, to get this price they have to agree to various contracts. There are some pretty nasty restrictions in them, not all of which are known(The contracts are covered by an NDA) But it stops them from selling dual boot machines, and restricts them from sellling machines without an operating system.
Sad part is, even after being found guilty of anti-trust violations, nothing has changed, except that microsoft realized how much they can get away with.

No arguement from me on that one. I may disagree with you about the Athlon but WinMe blows major chunks.

win98 SE for games & X45 combo
XP for everything else
be a man and dual boot :)

OK, I actually think I'm back where I started before I tried to "fix" my system.
AH will run, but 4 out of 5 times that I try to start it, I get an instant CTD. I managed to play offline a couple of times, one CTD after about 10 minutes, and I exited after 5 minutes the second time on.
I think my problem is the K7AMA MoBo, or maybe the Ram.
I heard that Win XP won't support CH pro stuff. True or not?
