SOB
If there is one common denominator to all of my puter problems it is clearly me! (Either that or I'm frigging cursed)
However, I will continue to blame my hardware and software as being the real culprits while fully admitting that I'm stooppid!
Grumble grumble!
OK, Me installed, everything is working fine except I just downloaded AH and got
"An I/O error occured while installing a file. This is normally caused by a bad instalation media, a corrupt installation file, or perhaps your a total %&%#$ MORON and your never going to play AH again (hehe)."
So I deleted everything AH and reinstalled and got the message, "You again? Your still a moron and you can't play AH! neaner neaner neaner!"

ROFLMAO!

Well...I feel for ya Eskimo. Sounds like a freakin nightmare. Good luck.
-
Did you upgrade DirectX after putting on ME? That might fix it..... (or not - )
-
Eskimo, run checkdisk with the "surface scan" option. (This will take a while.) I have a feeling that you have a bad hard drive.

Yes, and AH won't finish the install I/O error.

Still think the problem is the DVD configuration Eskimo, however, the harddrive can be bad even though you just bought it. Can be dammaged even though it is brand new.

Start ->Run->dxdiag then run a complete test. Update if you have'nt already

Eskimo simplify simplify simplify
Breakyour system dwn to barebones
1 HDD vid card sound card 1 stick memory floppy
then see what it does and again make sure that new HDD is using an 80 wire ribbon cable, 40 wire will be to noisy.
If it wrks bare bones then you have a bench mark to start from
add back new components and then see what happens one item at a time.

Eskimo.....
shoot the computer with a 12ga, then go buy a good one (steal if you have too!). You will feel better.
-
Call me stupid eskie, if your puter is down, how can you even read the forums? :D
-
Some do have 1 "puter". I personally have ..4.
BTW, dont wonder where Mrs Spoon is...heh heh heh.
-
anyway, Mr Fork.... apart from the fact he could have more than one computer, its running AH he is having a problem with at this point.... :p
-
Well I'll be forked - you are right Flossy! LOL
I have 3 puters btw.
Mrs Spoon? Nope. Just a single fork in the drawer. However, I'd never turn down the opportuniy to snuggle up with a spoon. :D

Hey Eskimo you work as teacher, why don't you ask the computer geek at you school for help. LOL
Good luck little Bro.
-
Don't worry too much about it Eskimo. When I upgraded a while back I made the mistake of slighly chipping the edge of my XP 1800 processor.
That gave me the excuse to get the Athlon XP 2100 I guess but the swearing was enough to chase the wife and kid from the house.

That's basically what I got, with a DVD/CD for installing CD drivers.
Thanks

I know it's a stupid question but did you install VIA 4in1 drivers (if your mobo has VIA's chipset of course)?
Edit: Looks like it has Ali chipset: Be sure you have downloaded correct drivers for your mobo:

I installed the drivers on the Mainboard CD.

Drivers coming with mobo in a CD are usually quite old; You should download new drivers from their site or at least check out how old versions that CD has.

My guess is bad ram or a defective hard drive.
The ram is easy to test: http://www.memtest86.com and download the 3.0 version. You'll need a new floppy to extract it onto. Boot the computer off the floppy and let the system run (512 MB ram takes about 35 - 45 minutes to test). You will see if any errors occur, and at the end of the 9 tests it runs you'll get a pass or fail. The tests will repeat until you hit escape.
You should also run a scan disk on the hard drive. If that passes, do another scan disk with the "surface scan" option turned on. This will take an hour or more. Don't just assume new drives are good, I've had 4 Western Digital drives (2 20GB and 2 40GB drives) fail on me in the last 8 months. Two of them failed after a few days and the others lasted about 6 months.

Thanks bloom,
I know how to make the PC boot from floppy in BIOS, but I don't know how to make the FD "bootable". It just tells me to get the disk out...

Everything about boot-disks: http://www.pcguide.com/proc/sw/boot.htm
"bring up the Windows Explorer, right-click on the floppy disk icon and select "Format...", then be sure to click the checkbox that says "Copy system files". This will give you a blank bootable disk"

from memtests readme:
"Memtest86 is a stand alone program that cannot be executed under windows and must
be loaded from a floppy disk.
To install Memtest86:
- Extract the files from the zip archive
- Open the directory where the files were extracted and click on "install.bat".
- The install program will prompt you for the floppy drive and also prompt you to
insert a blank floppy.
- To run Memtest86 leave the floppy in the drive and reboot.
