Title: Headphones?
Post by: Drunky on October 12, 2002, 03:58:45 PM
Who uses headphones instead of speakers?

I have both but started using headphone cause I'm in the living room with wife/baby/tv.

I've tried speakers when wife/baby/tv is gone/gone/off but I don't like them anymore because I get clearer, more distinct sounds with headphones.

Hell I can tell when a plane is in my blind spot sometimes because I hear his engine.

Anyone one else?

Regards,
Drunky

Yep...headphones to appease the locals and my vox tends to be garbled w/ speakers.

Headphones are great for gaming.  I used to get accused of cheating in Tanarus because I could find "stealthed" tanks by listening for them.  :)

Here is a really top notch pair at a great discount:  http://store.yahoo.com/millionbuy/snymdrv600.html

MSRP on these is like $130!

I have a set from the dollar store that I use when the GF is asleep--came in a 3-pack for only 4 bucks.    Otherwise it's back to my deluxe $5 speakers  :)

I use these
gamevoice (http://www.microsoft.com/catalog/display.asp?subid=22&site=10511)

excellent platronics headset-mic with a usb hub that lets you extend your headphones along way and gives you a switch to change between speakers and headphones..
35$

I use gamevoice also... however, the cheesy headset/mic that they sold with it sucks bad.  So I bought me a Labtec headset/mic.

Headsets allow clearer vox and sound for me, aswell as appeasing my sleeping wife in the next room.

However, when I want to annoy my neighbors, I switch to my stereo speakers, turn up the volume, and launch a formation of Lancasters.   (I live in a 4 -story apartment building...   you can hear the reverbs all the way down in the basement when I do that.  :D  )

Headphones here too.  I use the big kind that are soft and fit over the entire ear.  Funny thing is, after some time flying I start to heat up.  I guess ears really release a lot of heat from your body and these things just trap it in.  The really bad thing about headphones is that prior to a TOD Scenario Mission, I usually miss some important order from our CO due to having to take off the headphones to get a drink or deal with the kids.

I use a $20 labtec headset.  Decent sound, and a headset makesit much easier to hear those people who have soft vox.

Get the cordless ones.  :)

I hear you about the heat build up.  After one of the Big Week frames I actually had a puddle of sweat in my earcups.

I use Plantronics Audio 90 w/ the headphone/speaker switch.  It's a little box I've got double-side taped to my desk next to keyboard that goes to my soundcard, headphones, and speakers.  I flip a switch on it to go back and forth, and it supports the microphone on the headphones too!

Very good stuff.  The Audio 90s are $30 at Circuit City, and the switch is $15 there or are CompUSA.

I really love my Altec Lansing headsets that I purchased from CompUSA.

I had the $100+ dollar Plantronics and the were uncomfortable and broke fairly quickly.

The Altec Langsing cost around $25 and sound great.

Very odd, cause sony sells them direct for $99:)  However, the $66 is still better.

I prefer to use my speakers because they are a hi-end set, and sound really good, but when the wife is watching TV, I can't hear my squadmates well enough, so on go the headphones.  I think I spent about $20 or so on the headset.

I'd like to invest into a good headset w/ mic, but the plugin for the headset is on the left speaker, and the mic is on the back of the PC, so I end up with two pieces of hardware on me.  The mic is a half headset and I wear it like a collar with the mic pointed up.

Getting in and out of the "cockpit" is a pain right now because of it:mad:

I did want to add that ambient sound comes over better on the headphones though.  Go figure.  Perhaps the speakers are getting on.

I have a surround sound  system but this is not vox friendly... for vox-gaming I use the plantronics 90 as well... I've been thru many labtec and plantronic sets.. the 90 is a good set for gaming.

I always use HP, they add a sensation of real flying; anyway I find little less comfortable wearing leather boots , and all other leather accessories ( you can bet I fly LW planes) :) but what drives me mad is   the chute on my shoulders, pretty uncomfortable:D :D  in my deskchair.

Would be fine the possibility of having engine and ext rumours from speakers and radio message from headphones

Headphones are a must for me most of the time, because my PC is in our living room so I often have family behind me trying to watch TV....   I've gone through various headsets over the years, and they always seem to get a loose wire in the end.  At one point I was using an extremely good pair of headphones with a separate neck-mike but, as mentioned above, having two separate pieces of hardware on me made going AFK a pain!  Eventually the mike stopped working (wire loose again) so I am temporarily using the headset that came with a GameVoice I have.  Never use the GV except for occasionally switching between headset and speakers....  :)

Optimus Nova 80's. 15 bucks at Radio Shack. Light durable last and last. I wear them for hours and dont even know they are there. If they break...screw it, i got 2 years out of em...I'll spend another 15 bucks. :)

For VOX I have the Plantronics Audio 90 as well.  But their audio quality does not compare at all to my Sony MDR-V6's (which are probably similar to the MDR-V600 mentioned above).

Love these, good price, comfortable, clear, and a good mic.

I had a Plantronics set, it was pure crap, uncomfortable, the strap broke and the mic stopped working.
