Thanks for your input!

Xbox is a much better system - the trick is that it doesn't have the number of games that the PS2 has. Luckily, that'll be changing in the next several months.
Also, I think the general consensus is that if you are mainly interested in sports and racing, the Xbox wins hands down.
It has much better legs than the PS2, which is older, slower technology. You get better graphics (aside from resolution, the Xbox has better graphics than my PC w/ a GF3), as all of the bells and whistles are turned on. You get a hard drive, so you won't be buying memory cards, etc. With the new deal, you can get the DVD stuff for free, and they are bundling a couple of games with it for the holiday season.
And if that doesn't convince you, this should:

I have both, cant speak to the racing games, but I prefer the ea sports games on the PS2. Definately more games on the PS2. There are great games on both, so.. get both :D

Thats a tough call, I have a PS2 and love it. Thinking about getting a Xbox, but not to sure. I've heard that they are struggling to sell them. If "Bill" can't make to much money with it, well "Bye Bye".
Sony is solid in the market. Forget the Dreamcast, Sega does not make them any more.

Have Both also, the X box is better all around but limited games, The kids like the PS2 cause they can play their older games on it.

Xbox hands down. I had been out of the console market till last year and bought a PS2 with NCAA Football 2002; it was nice but I felt it lacked something. I played the same game this past summer on my friends Xbox and then played NCAA Football 2003 on the Xbox and PS2. It was like night and day to me. That was the moment I made a deal to another friend to sell him my PS2 and the 3 games I had and then bought myself an Xbox and NCAA 2003. The Xbox has better graphics and it does not take all month to get the game started if you only have a limited amount of time to play.

Who's it for?
neither PS2 nor Xbox caters to kids very well... just saying +)

It's all a matter of scale...
PS2 plays all of the PS1 games, and it even uses PS1 controllers.
I expect that the PS3 will stay consistent with this and use the same controllers as well.
My kids have had both here in the house. Difference in graphics is marginal at best.
If it were me, I'd go with the PS2.

get a Xbox and a PS2 :) i got a PS2 now has good graphics but PS1 had better games Xbox ...well thats all you could want in a console im gett'n one soon i hope sick of useing my friends

Thanks kindly for all the input. So I gather the regular XBOX does not play DVDs? You have to buy a separate something to do that? Is it expensive? This is theo nly way I am justifying this with the wife - gotta have DVD player ;) I told her what great kids we could be and give our DVD player to her sister for Christmas ;) Kratzer, where can I get that stuff for free?
I am leaning towards the Xbox, especially with the broadband capabilites.

Why get an X-Box? It's just a windows-PC put into a small box at a good price. You'll get all the X-Box games worth as PC port at equal if not better quality (resolution, online, mouse control in FPS). The X-Box does not have one KILLER game you cant get on a PC (IMO).
The PS2 on the other hand features a lot of games, especially out of the roleplaying genre you'll never get on a PC.

To play DvDs on a XBox, you need to get a remote control that is around $20 - $30. I think they also sell the DvD remote with the system in a bundle now, not sure.

Kirin, that's totally not the case - everyone thinks because it has a hard drive and windows CD lurking in the background that it is a computer. Not the case at all.
There are plenty of good games, and plenty more on the way.
As far as I know, most anyplace should have the free DVD deal - I believe it is a mail in rebate type of thing, and until you get the rebate, you will be out $30.
Oh, and that bundle is Jet Set Radio Future (I haven't played it - seems more of a younger crowd game) and Sega GT, which it seems has been pretty well received.
My favorite, and the one that really shows off the graphics, has been Rallisport Challenge, though both Halo and Max Payne were fun to play on it as well.

X-Box is just a P3-750 with a GF3ish level card and 64Mb of RAM.
The only reason the graphics may look better than a GF3 based PC is when you drop the res down to TV level (640x480ish) fps goes up and you can use all of the funky hardware effects without massive framerate hits.
Microsoft are playing tech-Cops on the X-box (scanning your system for stuff they don't like), give ya $$$ to Sony.
If you want to stick to real games (especially online stuff) then a PC is still best.

It doesn't matter how what they have inside of it works, it just matters what it does, and how well it does it. You can't call it a PC, because it isn't - it fits a different niche. If it is a niche you aren't interested in, fair enough, but if you are, then it is a very viable system. Fact is, it IS much more powerful than the PS2. If you want to play console games, who cares how it gets there?
-
It depends on terms of looks over playability. Some guys say the X-Box is best...some say the PS2 is best, and others say the GCN is the best.
In all fairness to either of the three consoles...PS2 wins the "war" hands down...it's got far better games that any other system to date. Next in line behind that is the GCN, cause it's Nintendo...and thry can make great games. Third in line is the X-Box...and the only reason it is last in sales in America (and it will flop hard in Japan) is because it does not have any killer apps on it. Halo is said to be the best game of all time, but I'll be able to save $200 when I get it for PC later in the year.
I'd go with the PS2...as it has a wider selection of games (GTA3, Gran Turismo 3, Frequency, Metal Gear Solid 2). If you want to save money slighty, go with the GCN...as it has some killer games (Eternal Darkness, Rouge Squadron 2, Resident Evil)
You make the call...IMO the X-Box only has good LOOKING games...not good PLAYING games.

XBox.
Even if the XBox could also play PS1 games (it doesn't) it wouldn't weigh in my decision to buy it. My PS1 still works and both the PS2 and XBox wouldn't make them look better or play better. Are you planning on buying some PS1 (inferior) game and you don't have a PS1? Get a PS2 then. LOL Ended up giving my nephew my old PS1 and all my games after I got my XBox. Some console games can be made better than for the PC as the console has only one sound chip/card, video chip/card, etc, unlike the PC which can have many different options. The XBox is a more powerful console than either the PS2 or Game Cube. You'll see even more games that the PS2 just can't touch. If you still want to play many PS1 games, get a PS1 and an XBox. :)

Unless you are buying it for a child, stay away from the Nintendo Game Cube. I got one for Xmas and I am really disappointed in it. Very few games out for it, and 70% of the ones that they do have a cartoonish platform games. :(
-
Ah, Mickey...yet another of those who stereotype the GCN cause it's purple and has a handle.
Thing about the GCN is it is a fun platform to play. I own both a PS2 and a GCN and I play both of them all the time. I only go on gameplay...not what a game looks like. You never know...jsut because some game doesn't have guns and blood and heads going everywhere does not mean it isn't a fun game. Mario on the GCN is one of the best looking and best playing games out there...platform wise at least.
Give GCN a chance...it will shine in its own time.
As for this debate...go with PS2...

The Woman was smart enough to buy me a black one. :)
I never knocked the gameplay of the GCN, just the limited number of titles and the fact that 70% of them are based on cartoons/skateboarding.
