Getting ready to graduate from college, I work part time for a local Bar and Grill. I have been working thier for almost two years. I started as a Dishwasher, then I was Prep Cooking, now I am a line cook. We also have a Dish Washer, He has been there for 21 years. From rumors/stories he is a Vietnam Veteran and has Degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
His schedule has him come in at 10am, when there he walks around for 45 min oggling the waitresses as they prepare for lunch and talks about his life of Reality TV shows. During lunch we use a lot of Pans and Salad bowls. Which we are continously running out of. Our Night Dishwasher/s come in at 5-6 pm, at this time he immediatley stops doing whatever he is doing. Makes his 4th meal of the day and reads a TV guide until 730pm.
So..During the Pens home opener, we get slammed, No Dishwaher shows up. He sits there for an hour while Bus tubs pile up. Then leaves through the large crowd at the bar. After the rush that lasts till damn near closing time. I immediatley start doing dishes and finish up around 1115.
Disgusted by his deplorable work ethic, I wrote a letter to the owners of the restuarant about how he is a waste of time and money. I was harshly reprimanded and told by my bosses son, "That we would pay (The Dishwasher) to come in and beat off". I replied with what I beleived and they did not like that.
I was inches from losing my only source of income during my final quarters of school.
Apparently my management does not want to do anything about him and immediatley handed my note to our new head Chef.
What would you do in my Situation? What would you do in my management's situation?
Advice please

School of hard knocks... you're not his employer.
In the long run, worrying about an employer's fairness and preferential treatment (unless it's the type that courts get involved with) is a waste of time.
You've stated your unhappiness. Your employer doesn't care. You have two choices... suck it up or walk.
That's all there is.
OTOH and IANAL but... you could work to the same level as the underachiever, and you'll probably get fired. Then, you can sue for wrongful termination. :D
-
You've done all you could. It's their business, and if they want to pay people to do nothing, they are allowed to.
In your situation, I would either look for another job or shut up and do the work. If they want to pay you cook's money to be a dishwasher, so be it. Maybe keep track of how many hours of dishwashing you do each week and submit the figures to the chef each week.
What I would do in your employer's situation is not important, because they obviously value other things above efficiency and productivity.

Most people get fired for personality issues, it seems.

Yep, and a lot of people DON'T get fired because of their personality. If your boss likes you, you have to really screw up to get canned.
-
Nothing prevents you from looking for another job while you are employed.
Nothing.
And, you don't screw yourself for something someone else has done wrong by leaving before you have another source of income.
if you are getting ready to graduate, perhaps you should start interning for whatever it is you are studying for.
Crappy things happen all the time at work, how important they are to you is related to
how much you care.
and how badly it will directly affect you.
Right now many people don't even have a job (not a guilt trip) Play it safe, it's a tough market out there.
If you are certain you do not want to stay, start looking and interviewing, believe me, even doing that will ease your mind.
It's fairly easy to keep a job, you do not have to let them know what you are thinking, I'm fairly certain that they don't care.
just work and go home..but if you want to leave, you decide that and start looking.
the worst thing you can do is pay for someone elses screw up by getting yourself fired.
Then you will just be pissed off *and* out of work..(you maybe right, but right doesn't pay the bills)
Take it easy and let it chill out before you make decisions. Making hasty ones almost always screws you.
-
Bide your time, do the best you can, and finish your degree. You could also try to look for another (and better) job in the meantime, but be sure to stay employed. This guy obviously has some hit with the owners.
-
why did you do the dishes? Just leave umm next time it aint your job is it? :)
-
Because he crys like a little squeak in the morning If there is dishes to be done when he arrives.
And I would have been reprimanded worse because of his continous squeaking to the management.
Im a hard worker and I show respect to all of my coworkers. Everyone likes me there (to a certain extent), I always help out where help is needed. But when somebody has a job to do, Do it. Your on the clock, do your f---in job. i dont care if he's been there since ive been alive, I dont care that he is a veteran. I dont play games when Im at work, Im there to do one thing, Work!

Borhter i have worked in so many restaruants that its sick! and yes there are people who get the special treatment! this one is a case i would have left alone knowing he's a Nam Vet. lots of folks get the special toejam case there there every day and do there job remember he's not the one who called in sick he did his time and thats all that "he" is required to do! now i know that if it was you they'ld make your bellybutton stay and work! all too too diddlying true !
Bro let it go get out and do me a favor "promise your self to not get stuck working and a damn restarunt again" they are traps and they alone will keep you down! get out stay away!
Granted i made better money waiting tables and having my fun but even with all i gave i never got "the special treatment" and you got to be sucking dick or some one like him to get that kinda thing! Be greatful that the owner atleast respects him as a man who served his country!
BOX:rolleyes:

Sounds like he has you wrapped up.......
Dont ever end up in prison with him
-
tell the dude what the Boss' kid told you "we would pay (The Dishwasher) to come in and beat off". maybe its true, maybe not. sounds like the vet would get paid for doing nothing if he could, probably mgmt wouldn't the idea of having to hire another dishwasher, possibly you would end up doing his job daily
-
Shrug. For all we know, the dishwasher might have carried the owner's unconscious, bleeding body out of a hot LZ in 1968....
Sounds to me like you burned your bridges. I'd find another job.
Where do you work? the 'burgh is my hometown.
Mosca

Im living on the Northside right now. I Work Downtown. hehehe the restuarant will rename nameless to protect the lazy good for nothing..
And anyway, as soon as I get my degree, Im out! f**k this city.
And everything in it. I'll Send out my Demo from my real home...Wild Wonderful West Virginia.

That precise thought crossed my mind after reading the story.
Nefarious,
You're almost out. Keep your head down, do your job and then get the out when you get your degree.
-
let me get this straight. he lets the dishes pile up goes home then comes back in the morning and squeakes they havent been done and hes the dishwasher?
ignore him and let him make an official complaint to the management.
If they then tell you its your job to make the dishwashers job easier by DOING HIS JOB for him ask for a damn pay rise.
Im sorry but for me personally I wouldnt put up with it unless this guy had pulled MY bellybutton out of a hot LZ in 68 :)
if i was you id merely say to the management that you are a hard worker and you do your job as asked, but to be moaned and squeaked at by another co worker for not doing the dishes that was actually THEIR job is unacceptable.Tell them you'll help out as best you can at ALL times but you wont stand for this guy moaning and squeaking at you.
You have rights as a worker. If it looks like this stance might lose you your job and you cant afford to then button your lip and just get on with it until you can afford to leave but make sure they know you wont accept unfair dismissal.
in the mean time record some sounds from appocolypse now onto a hand held tape player and when hes alone doing the dishes play it !! :D as soon as he looks for where the sound is coming from stop it and act like you heard nothing lol. Hell at least you'll have fun doing it ;) mind you in all seriousness if this guy is really a war hero and not just some army clerk who served out there maybe you should allow him his few perks of the job? after all its really thanks to those that give up their youth to fight for what we believe in that we all have a job to go to.We do 'owe' them.

Nefarious:
All good advice here - and the thought about the hot LZ in Nam crossed my mind too. There must be something there. Just be happy you wont be in this situation forever. I wouldnt quit though, cause you loose a chance to collect unemployment - if ya absolutely gotta leave, make him fire ya.
I know the restaurant (as you know). Hope I have a chance to stop in when you're there sometime. Don't let the bastiges get ya down ;)
Best good advice I ever received was "don't listen to anybody's good advice".

I djust got the message that i wont be getting an raise this year.
How do i handle it?
1.Rent out my appartment (against profit...)
2.Quit my job
3.Order an ticket to Thailand
4.Get on the plane
5.Lay on the beach all day long and hang at my friends bar
I think im gonna be there for six months to an year.
Regards.

>I dont play games when Im at work, Im there to do one thing,
>Work!
Bravo Nefarious, I like that attitude. BTW: Im an expert dishwasher myself. Spent two years as a busboy in a Chinese restaraunt as a teenager 15-17. It doesnt get worse than a Chinese food when it comes to greese.
:D
-
Thanks everyone.
But I refuse to beleive that the owner is a Veteran. It looks like I wont have to quit or be fired. I am an important commodity to the business about 100x more than our friendly dishwasher. He will probably work there until the owner croaks. (Bonden-pun intended ;)) Then he will retire to a life of Reality shows and Turkey on wheat (no crust) sandwiches.
-
Pun understood :) Will stop in someday to say "Hya", just dont know when.....

if you don't sign the checks, then mind your own bussiness. there could be many reasons for his boss putting up with this, maybe they get tax breaks for hiring the guy, maybe the boss owes him big (saved his life, killed someone for him, who the hell knows), maybe the guy has pictures of the boss with a goat. at any rate your not paying his wages and it isn't your bussiness. IMO sending the letter was out of line.
before you send complaints always remember that "the squeeky wheel gets replaced"
-
Maniac, you need company? :D
