Title: What's your most memorable flight so far?
Post by: gofaster on October 14, 2002, 02:44:25 PM
Here's mine.

I was prowling around the valleys yesterday afternoon in my A8 while watching my NFL Fantasy team rack up points in my squadron's FF league.

There was a running gunbattle going on along the northern coastline between two airbases and the furball moved back and forth like a flag in a tug of war. The red guys had run a NOE Mustang raid a couple flights earlier by sneaking through the valleys between the bases on the inland side of the combat zone. I decided to play it smart and avoid the furball and work my way around the mass by ducking along the ridgelines, to try and catch another Mustang raid while it was low and slow. That's when I saw the first co-alt Mustang inbound to our airfield.  I figured I'd turn and engage and at least get him to drop any ordinance he may be carrying.

So he turns and comes at me and I press the HO, knowing that I'll win that battle.  He gets smart and rolls out into a break turn as we pass.  We're both packing some speed but I know my FW190A8 will bleed it quicker so I pull up and around as the airframe buzzes with the start of a high-speed stall.  I get my nose around just about the time he does and we do another HO.  He breaks as we pass and we swing around to do the HO thing again. And again.  That's the problem with high-speed fighters - neither plane can turn sharp enough to get on the other's tail.  So we go around a few times.  Altitude and speed are both getting lower.  The airframe is really buzzing now as the speed drops and I know the P-51 guy is popping his 25% combat flap to maintain control as my FW tries to snap roll left from engine torque.  As he passes, I drop my nose down, punch the WEP and dive into a valley to get some separation.  He brings his nose around to pursue but I've got the initial jump and get about d1.5 away by the time the numbers stabilize.

Now a 2nd P-51D comes diving down from my 4:00 position and closes on me.  I dive deeper into the canyon to get more speed.  I figure I'll try to get him to black out in a turn and smack into a mountainside, and maybe even get both of them that way.  I snap roll left, turn, then snap-roll right, turn, and pull up into a yo-yo, hoping he's lost me under his nose or in a black-out.  No dice. He's still back there and now we're in a horizontal scissors.  I turn left towards him, then reverse the turn as he turns right towards me and then reverses his turn.  Again, I bleed my speed faster in the turns and our turn radius' meet in a HO.  I squeeze off a burst and look back to see his vertical stabilizer flutter to the ground.  He goes into a stall and crashes.  "You shot down (name removed to protect the innocent)".  Man, I love firepower!

The horizontal scissors dropped my speed down to around 220 and now the first P-51 is back on me.  I nose down to get some maneuvering speed and equalize the playing field.  I'm hugging the mountains, doing high yo-yos, low yo-yos, snap rolls, anything to try and get this guy to black out.  He's inside guns range and things are getting tense.  I snap roll left and pull back on the stick as the airframe buzzes with a high-speed stall.  I look back in time to see black smoke start pouring from his nose, but I don't see any of our guys so I don't know what shot him.  Then he explodes.  "You shot down (name removed to protect the innocent)."  I figure he must've dug his prop into the earth and porked his engine.

Now I'm glad I spent all those months with my "Fly What Shot Me Down Last" policy, because its good to know the capabilities and weaknesses of all of the planes.

:D

My most memorable 'flight' is taking a PzKpfw IV south to an enemy field that was shut down and watching the defenders put on an amazing defense to keep us out of the town (which was south of the field, making the run to the town longer and more likely to be whacked) until the town started regenerating and the field reopened -- then sitting about 50 yards off the end of the runway vulching planes with my main gun for ten minutes until they manage to get enough on the ball to take out my turret  and pintle gun -- and then another five while I vulch with my hull machine gun until they finally kill me.

I wound up with nineteen kills that one run; if I'd been able to get back to a friendly field and land them (or if my side had managed to take the field so I could land there), I would have been laughing like a hyena. As it was, watching Spits and 'Stangs and Tiffies and 190s and one Tempest all pop up in front of me, start rolling, and *BOOM* 75mm HE right through the cockpit was some of the most entertaining time I've had online.

Just a day or two after the last version of AH was released and I decide I'm going to try my historical fave the F4F-4 and a N1K decides to target me for an easy kill and low-and-behold, after I realize I'm not in the trouble I figure I should be in, I'm able to keep up in the turn with him and blast him while he attempts to loop over.

I was parked 50 yards off the runway when I started popping planes on the runway, and they managed to get my engine fairly quickly -- I only had three kills at that point -- so I couldn't get to the runway to exit successfully; I decided to sit there and see how optimistic they were going to be about getting planes off the runway. I would have done better, but the damn 7.92mm popguns for the pintle and bow just don't throw enough damage to be able to get a solid kill on a plane, even at 50-100 yards; three or four managed to make it back down on the runway after they realized they'd lost engine oil and exit normally, so I didn't get kills on everything I shot up.

Last night, four kills in a one-wheeled P38.

Two maneuvering spits that were chasing good guys, one Mossie who had just rotated and got his wheels up, and the same guy who immediatly re-upped his mossie on a cross runway (and probably didn't even get his engines started).

Guy who took out my No. 1 engine came in to finish the kill.  I sucessfully Drexed him, flew 20 miles home, and landed.

Best flight... just recently.

Me and a squadie took on 4 spits, an la7 and a P51B on the deck.  He in an me110, me in a 38. We got 4 of the 6 :D

I truely learned E mangagement and what it means to fite in the vertical when in the 38 during that fite.  I'm starting to really like that bird.

what a great game :D

hosing Oopsey (shane) 5 times in a row back in AW in an la-5 (vs F6) and listening to him howl:):)...of course he owns my prettythang now....sigh. Those paybacks are a squeak.

Actually not a "fight" but an ongoing event way back in the "original TA". You'd Find Av8tr, Cit, Nash,DMF, Nath and a bunch of others furballing. Easily the most fun I ever had in any aviation sim...obviously in that crowd I played the baby seal more often than not but it was always a blast.

No mention of those 30+ kills ya got after rolling to an enemy base the first week the Osty was introduced?

I think as a squad we got something like 70 kills at that base, all in GV's  :D

CT Malta map (I had spotted unusual numbers reaching 50+).

It ended up being Funkedup training his boyz on Hurricanes... at one point I'm alone and right in the middle of a huge hurricane coud. Managed to shoot three of the offenders, including their leader ... who got squelched for trying to explain me that I broke their training :D ;)

About 3 months ago, I signed up in AH again and set myself a personal target to EARN the right to fly a Me262.

After the disasterous loss of my first 262 aircraft (to a Dora that I never saw (ouch) ) , I finally earnt enough perks to be comfortable taking another 262 into combat.

On the weekend, I scored my first 262 kill :D

Personal target acheived!

And it only took me 40 hours of play

My first night of playing AH after about a 12 month break.  I was in a Yak-9T and a high 262 came in on me.  I pulled up into a ~60 degree climb and we both opened fire.  He missed me, but my 37mm took off his wing.

I probably had less than 15 kills at that point.

My Most memorable flight:

It was long, long time ago. During that time when the C 205 still was a plane that could fly.
Knight as always I encountered the Following : 3xspit V.
Pilots where:  PYRO, HITECH, SUPERFLY.
They all tried to nail me and I was all alone.
Flying at deck and swirling my Joystick as a madman. Flying as low as possible and laughing so hard that I could hardly breath, reading the messages that they sent. Saw bullets flying by me as they missed their target. Went over a hill and down, disapering for a brief moment. Turned hard in this moment and as they still was flying straight, I managed to get on the last spits 6 and shot down Pyro, then I evaded Hitech that tried to HO me and turned him out, brought him down. Being badly shoot up, I was more or less forced to fly over a closed field. Looking at my 6 I saw Superfly closing up, comin in for the "coupe the grace". I prayed a quick prey and crossed my heart.
Passing the closed field, smoking, no airloins, The spit was 550 from my six and I was waiting for the blast.
The field Opens UP!! The acks brings Superfly down and I manage to land, hurt but alive. (barly alive from laughin  ).

Best of all: I have it on film..........
Sad thing. I think that they changed the C 205 after this "incident".

CRABOFIX
Back as the spikes disapered in 1.11 and still flying C 205

My first 5 kill sortie without using the re-arm pad.  Shot down five lancs in an A8 (the last one had to use my cowl guns)in the space of 10 minutes--and this was in the days before 1.10 with all the multiple ways that it gives you bonus bomber kills--and the Lancs were a lot tougher then--and we used to have to walk 15 miles barefoot in the snow. . .

Squaddie covered my arse so I could land and I was jumping up and down at home.  Who says this is only a game?

Last night, I had a fairly memorable flight. I took a B-26 formation from A52 to A50, bombed the field, then made three strafing passes to kill the barracks, an ammo bunker, and an M-16 that upped from the VH, then flew back to A52 -- all without losing my two drones.

In retrospect, makes me wish I'd filmed it. I wish I could have seen the expression on the M-16 driver's face as my B-26 formation dove in on him.

my most memorable fligth was quite short :

The day the tempest was 1st availlable when taking off I spotted a red icon I was just reading OS... and KABOOM => Tower :p

The other was an inverted flyby in 262 at less than 500ft and more than 500 mph => my joystick decided to  SPIKE at this exact instant :D

Most memorable?

I was the lone aerial defender of a flat land (non-canyon) vehicle base in the Pizza Terrain.  This became a six kill mission in a P-40E against three Ostwinds, two Panzers, and a P-47D-30 with a single ammo load.  Several friendly Ostis were up to defend but out of range of the approaching enemy GV's, so there were several witnesses - lots of kudos.   Two people actually congratulated the accomplishment over channel 1 from enemy countries.  Certainly one of the most difficult and risky missions I've flown in AH and it was great to receive recognition.  :D

What made it especially memorable is that the score pages only gave me credit for the P-47.     I was penalized for taking off on a fighter mission and not an attack mission.  (editorial: There has to be a better risk/reward system. )

One of the most memorable flights for me was shortly after the smaller maps were reintroduced into the map rotation.  Knights were the southeast country on the Baltic map.  I noticed something was trying to slip down the eastern side of the map to attack the undefended bases in our rear (big red arrow on dar).  I took off in a 190D-9, a plane that I rarely fly, but decided its speed might be useful in this flight.  I climbed on max climb until I realized that the contact was not heading to my base, so I started in pursuit climbing as much as I could while trying to catch or intercept the contact.  I still did not know what I was facing, nothing on dar, and no visual, not even a dot.  Eventually, I realized the contact was heading to the capital, so I set my course to intercept.

As the contact came into visual range, and appeared on dar, I realized that it was 5 contacts, still above me at around 25K.  Getting closer I discovered that it was 5 formations of B-17's (15 planes), and they were all MINE!  The closest friendly was more than a sector away.  I radioed my find, as I continued to climb above the formation, taking my time to find the right time to pounce.

Things are noticeably different at 30K, and the 190 does not do well at that alt, so my first few passes only downed one or two bombers and slightly scattered the formation.  The next three passes broke up three of the formations, leaving only two smoking, and straggling.  I was out of cannons by this time and was desperate to take out another formation as the first friendly showed up.  As I dove on the next formation, I forced the shot for longer than I should have, and the formation was able to knock off my wing.

I don't remember how many I got credit for, but I was pretty happy to have caused so much devastation on such a huge bomber formation.  It must have been driving the bombers crazy to have such a hard time shooting me down.  I still have the film, but I haven't watched it in a long time.  I would be interested if anyone else remembers this flight.

I was in a Zeke defending that base on the SE tip of Mindano.
I had flown out NE over the water to check on a number of dots heading our way.  It happened to be a flight of about 4 or 5 AR-234's with a number of Me-262's in trail.  I must have been up around 20k as all these jets go screaming by... none of them even bothered so much as a wing waggle at me and kept going.  I was taking my time... and a mintue or so later, just as I was deciding to turn around and go back to the base I saw a lone dot way off on the horizon roughly co-alt.  I went straight at it hoping for a good fite.  Turns out it was another 262... obviously a late arrival to a mission.. I flew straight at it, just a bit lower.  Yes, I admit it... I took the HO.  It was a good HO too.  Ping-Ping-Ping POP!!  Can't remember who it was but I remember them saying something about typing too much :)

3 come to mind...

1)  Under attack in a Lanc....jettisoned bombs and cranked the speed to try to speed up and jink the 4 Doras that are tearing me apart.  Then I see "SHIP DESTROYED".  I accidentally sunk their CV!  Woohoo

2)  Flying along in an Ar234, I see an enemy Ar234 scoot in behind me.  Thinking this is just TOO good to be true, I let him get within 300feet of me (my six) and notice he is firing his tail guns.  The guy is a newbie and clearly thought adding cannons to the Ar234 would be "frontward" firing cannons.  I lit him up and sent him to Earth in pieces.  :D

3)  In a P-38, vulching a field...dumped 2 1,000 pound bombs on an upping Spitfire.  Got 8 kills.  Apparently a mission was attempting to up from the very same spot.

so me and my girlfriend were flying back in an airbus a300 from  vacation and suddenly the captain went on and told us we had to divert to a nearby airport.  the plane felt sluggish and the flight attendants lost all their smiles, hmmmm, and this guy in first class was reading a paper and you can see the paper was noticeably shaking.... i ended up anxious myself.

the plane was landing and you can see the firetrucks with their emergency lights blinking beside the runway.  we landed safely and met my cousin who worked in that airport.  he told us that we were flying with just one engine   we did not take the next flight and decided to spend a couple of days on the ground first.

the next time we travelled we took the boat and had a cabin all to ourselves:D

hmmm... am i in the right thread.....

hehe, ok Kubek I'll bite. I'm sure that others especially the G.A. sticks will have 1st person stuff but....I was flying into Sao Paulo last year in bad weather (pretty common down there) and the pilot tried to get in with weather at Min. After aborting twice on final we started for 1st alt...then diverted to 2nd. After 10 min or so diverted back to original destination. 1 more aborted final before we touched down. Ran into the 1st officer in the can...they finally forced the last landing since they weren't certain they had fuel for more than 1 more pass and the captain felt he flew the approach nuts on...blew thru the min with no vis and literally picked up the landing lights as they flared on final.
Title: 50th Kill in 152
Post by: Turbot on October 24, 2002, 01:07:26 AM
The 50th was 152 vs p51x2,  They were winging great.   So it occurred to me why not use it against them?    So experiment begins:  I padlocked one of em, at this point didnt matter which one.   I just made sure I always "attcked" THAT one.   Obviously wasn't long before that guy was on pure defensive pleading for help and promising any sort of favors to wingie to clear him.

Did a few B&Z passes to set the mood, or better put the "E" state.  Have both of them nose up - but still have the most scared one marked from the beginnning.  Went in like I was about to do try do in the "scared" one - but with an eye to the rear looking for the lead 51's would be saviour to commit.  Hi-gee up and over, lock on the would be hero (which can be in only one place) and BOOM Turbot's 50th kill in 152.

Did I mention I dont think any of this was over 10k? I upped a 152 and told my squaddies "This one isn't making it home :)"  and "I am goign to fly it like an A5 and see what happens".   I had no idea it would have turned out so well, and I landed that plane.

edit to add this to annoy the pony pilots :

turbot has 7 kills and has been killed 1 time in the Ta 152H against the P-51D.

I'm sorry but had to do that :)

Laying the smackdown on the insiders has its own rewards that can't be measured by a scoring system, right Crabofix. ;)

AHhhh the memories

1.  Killed a 262 with an M16.
2.  Downed 3 Lancs on one pass in a 262.  (wish I could have heard the cursing that must have gone on at that guy's computer desk)  Think I had a B17 kill also the same flight.  Landed with half my ammo.
3.  Every kill/flight in a Tempest - love those 20s
4.  Had a couple of high angle head on kills where I was lucky to get a hit and the bad guy never had a shot.  My La5 vs a Yak with ten guys chasing him, blew the Yak up completely.  Then my F4U-1D vs a P51, sprayed, prayed and had it answered with the 51 loosing a wing.
5.  Drove an Osti on to a Bish field who only had 3-4 fields left at the time.  They were uppin like mad Bishes and I was parked next to a hangar to sheild myself from approaching GVs and blasting at everything that upped.  13 kills in about five min including 1 panzer, 1 osti 1 M16.  I think a tank drove up behind me to get the kill.  It was a one pinger.  That was fun.

When I was bounced by Tuck in his Hurri IIc. I was in Fw 190A-8, he dove after me, I simply pointed nose down and leveled at the deck. He never came closer than 1500 yds.

After that I started high speed climb and soon was above the poor Hurri. We were alone all the time and I made about 5 passes, each time he would try to flat turn into a HO. After a brief snapshot he loses a wing. He couldn't run away or out E me, so it was rather inevitable.

What was so special about the fight ? It was so dull and predictable, it must have pissed of Tuck pretty much. He started lamenting on open channel of no skill dweebs, boring BnZ passes and such ;).

Then he upped at near field in a Yak 9U, me still in A-8. He climbed well above and sure enough, there he was diving at me again. I knew I couldn't outrun it and maneuvering is not my kind of game (;)), so I just dove to near ack. The ack boys didn't do quite well and Tuck died only after gtiing my aileron.

The channel 1 whining was fantastic after that, makes me smile when I remember it.

Second most memorable would be dragging DFALCO in his Lame-7 to my ack. I was in D-9, he was closing and probably carving anothe kill mark, but I had a friendly airfield hidden behind the ridge. Just as he came to d6-7, we zoomed and ack did the job.

It was back in AW, I was in the RCAF, we decided to do a stuka raid for fun, we really had no intention of success- just a mission to fill the text buffer with comments. Was at least 15 stukas we all stayed together & covered each other, most dropped succesfully on target, many had kills & I dont think we lost anyone on that mission.  I miss that siren.

The very first kill I landed

I took off in a Bf109G6 with the 30mm loadout. Was my second or third day, I can't remember. Saw an A20 do an attack on the town and flee. Nobody else was around so I gave chase. Closed in after a while and succeeded in avoiding his return fire, he obviously chose to switch between hard maneuvering and shooting back. He dragged me to the deck, pretty hairy with zero experience! Started shooting at ranges from 600-300 and saw hits. What I did't know was that the poor ballistics of the 30mm are modeled in AH so I was wondering why I had to hit him so often.  But after I had expended nearly all my ammo (I obviously only hit him with 13mm rounds) he plunged into the sea. I actually was pretty pleased with myself as he could neither hit nor evade me. I was shaking all over, literally dripping with sweat and saturated with adrenaline when I bounced down the runway. Quite nice to see the wtg's after I announced to the world that I had landed my first kill.

I chose this story because I couldn't log in yesterday and flew a bit off-line. Found out that one tap on the trigger (2 shells, no MG's) in a 30mm Bf109 explodes a drone Mustang!

I also have fond memories of the night where I landed multiple kill sortie after multiple kill sortie in my FM2 defending an airfield from a CV attack and of my first goon drop, to resupply the HQ which was warmly welcomed by my countrymen. Also the base defense when I got 5 kills in a Mossie in two sorties for one loss I fondly remember.

Worst experience? Being used to very bouncy landings in BF109s without anything breaking and then breaking a SpitI on landing with three kills under my belt and being unable to land P47's on a regular basis :-s

had lots of fights to remember.

first kill in AH was on my very first sortie in the MA.  got an La-7 while flying a F4U-1D.  I think I died 20 straight times after that.  ;)

Me and TeeeRex in La7's vs Leviathn in a Spit V many months ago (if not over a year).  fight lasted several minutes with me finally getting Lev.  He forced overshoots constantly in that fight, with the alt ranging from about 15,000ft to 7,000ft.  It never got near the deck.

Most memorable recent kill was Wed night.  Flying the Yak-9T for the first time, I hit Tumor with the luckiest 90 degree snapshot with the 37mm.  Was a prayer of a shot from about 250 yards out and landed just aft of his cockpit and exploded the plane.  The kill cleared a fellow Knight furballer's 6 which made it even sweeter.  ;)  I say luck because I really haven't figured out how to use that cannon yet.  I just am amazed every time I fire and see a hit sprite with that thing!  (oh yeah, Tumor did get revenge on me a sortie or so later)

I flew with Anton in the RCAF, and that is definatly one of the most memeroble flights. Just the sounds of those sirens when all 15 or so Stuka's dove on the targets was awsome. We had the base down in no time, I had taken out the last fuel cell that destroyed the base while others were getting kills with the Stuka BB guns. Those were the days....

Yesterday...

I flew a few missions from a CV to support an attack on a knight field. At first it was pretty one on one, but I managed a few kills. At a given point we got the upper hand and I found time to grab some alt. Saw two spits very occupied with shooting one my of friends in an F4U. Just before I could help out they got him but I managed to hit one Spit on the first merge, outfought the other one easily (plenty of E to burn) and then turned around to finish the first one off who tried to get away with a damaged engine. Got a few vulch kills, and then crashed upon landing on my carrier because it was turning hard. Pity. After that I got an unbelievable killing streak, with one reload in between. We were capping the field and there was much to vulch. Not hounourable but fun and I also got a P51 or two coming in to help from another field. I felt completely in control and whenever I squeezed the trigger I hit something. At a certain point I had to rtb ammo and returned to my carrier. When approaching I found out that my tanks were almost dry and then that the carrier I saw was an enemy one! Turn away and then my engine cut so I had to bail. Damn, had the chance to land approx 20 kills in an FM2!

Still got an unbelievable (for me) 30+ perk points. Friggin great! 20 kills, zero damage!

Probably the most fun for me was when a base of ours was under attack and I upped from another base.  My main goal was harrasment and distraction and if I could pork some fuel.  I used a la 7 and a tiffie to do these sorties and on one sortie a 262 was landing.  So I zoom in and just as he is about stopped ready to land boom I get him, and I was originally diving down for fuel tanks.  By this time I had 2 on my 6 so I loop back over dive down again with wep on and lo and behold the 262 is upping again.  OMG my lucky day I think and kill the same pilot again.  I was so excited about killing the 262 pilot twice that I forget the rest of that sortie but I know it ended with about 5 on my 6 finally getting me.  I tell my squadies about it becuase the 262 was harrasing them at our base that was under attack.  Then soon after one of my squadmates is telling me someone is on channel 1 saying crap about me.  Well I would be mad to losing 400 perk points in the space of a minute so I didnt respond.  However 2 of my squadmates were having fun with him on channel 1.

What I really like the most is when I get goood 1vs 1 dogfights when no one else is around.  Heck to me its fun to duel for 10 min with just one enemy.  There are several pilots out there that are fun to fight against because they are so good and if your one of those pilots I've fought alone with thanks for the good fight you gave me even if you got me in the end or I got you.

I look forward to more good fights in the air with you all.
