Post by: Matt1221b on October 22, 2002, 02:50:33 PM
hey i just heard the funniest thing. is not a good thing i feel bad for the guy but its human nature to laugh...

well my grandpa told me this story that they were in the RAF and were flying some hurricans at a high altitude... they got some fighters a couple of 109s and they got a little damage, about halfway throught the dogfight my grandpas friends plane got hit and the oils started a fire....well he had to eject right then and there....and my grandpa finish with the last 109 there were only about 2 or 3 against 2 hurricans on a routine flight....my grandpa later found out that the guy died of starvation from waiting so long while he went to the ground...he was so afraid of jumping out of a plane that he had to pull his chute cause we was wicked scared... so ya i thought it was funny but i do feel bad for the guy
:D :(

The human body can go without food for 70 days, without water for 3 days.

You telling me he opened his chute SO high it took him more than 3 days to fall?

Sorry, I dont believe it.

ahhh.. o2 starvation. Didnt think of that one. Possible, but heck, how high could a spitfire get in those days anyway? Even a chute can fall mighty fast.

Hey guys chill a bit. This is just one of those stories your grandpa tells you and you enjoy every minute. You generally don't start challenging your granddaddy over technical details and wording.

This person was just sharing a memorable story from his grandpa. He enjoyed it and thought he would pass it along to the AH community.

If you know how war stories are, particularly the "funny" ones, they may get modified along the way and over time.

Thanks for the story!

:)

I must be missing something.

I don't find anything funny in the death of your grandfather's friend and wingman.

I must say I agree. The 111's usually operated between 10k and 20k. The guy prolly froze to death if he deployed his chute at that alt.

i have to agree with Modas.  That story is so cryptic i can't even get an idea of what his grand-dad is trying to say, . .or what's funny about it.

My Grand-dad fought for the Germans on the Russian front.  He has two bullet holes in his bellybutton which is probably the only reason he's still alive.....having to be evacuated b4 the impending doom..he's 80 and still walks around the house crying every day at the suffering of people in war, . . .that includes the suffering of people like those in Palestine or Iraq who find themselves in situations beyond their control, but face horrible realities..... and he mumbles under his breath  .....things like . ."A Russian man ..is a man just like me......" . over and over......,  because of the way the German's propogandists dehumanized the enemies..and he still battles the ideas.. What scares me about our own situations in modern times, . .and being a U.S. citizen is how similar some peoples attitudes are in not seeing the humanity of others...

A Major Salute to your Grandfather

My Uncle was a P-47 pilot in WW2...
He has similar feelings and thoughts...

Thank God for what they all did, so air combat is only a game to us.

whats funny about it is the irony of it!

the guy was so scared of, i presume, falling to his death by forgeting to open his chute at the right alt, that he paniced and opened his chute there and then

another thing is the chute is ment to keep him alive, but in this case it killed him

yup, my grandpa was a WW2 Wellington Pilot in North Africa.  He has many a story to tell, not many of them good.

he was shot down by ack while on a torp run.  But if he told  me he was shot down by pink rabbits wearing pinwheel hats i would believe him.

not just because i respect the man, but if i called BS he would cuff me one, (and i swear to god this man's hands are bigger than my head)
