I took a typing class in jr. high school, and another 4 hour keyboard class when it was obvious that my career in computing would benefit from it. I'm no master at the keyboard, but I'm a passible touch-typist.
But it is beyond my comprehension how so many of you manage to go on and on and on in the message buffer (channel 1, team channel, room channel, mission channel) while you are playing.
At first I thought that about 1/3 of the people in the MA simply sat in the tower all day and used AH as a chat room. No way could they type that much and fly. Then I conceded that all of that chatter was people making good use of their auto-climb time (and here I was using it to pee or check in with my wife).
But being more observant I see that, indeed, teammates who are right there in the same furball as me are chatting away on channel 1 to the guy they just shot down and on the team channel about this and that. I'm in awe. I find it almost impossible to issue a quick "rgr" or "cc" reply when I'm flying, let alone a "I'm draggin two LAme 7's toward A29 - plz help" (I mean to even take the time to include the insult - amazing).
All I can figure is that many of you get a *lot* of practice with one hand on the keyboard and the other on your, uh, stick.

The joys of autopilot.
Ch1 is endless fun for those times where you're just sitting back and climbing. Plus, keyboard classes are NOTHING compared to several years of actually typing. They're actually pretty worthless, If you spend a few months using a computer a lot, you'll become a better typist on your own. A couple hours in a class is no substitute for simply spending a lot of time doing it.
I type something like 80wpm, don't need to look at the keyboard, but I don't touch type at all.

If you don't look at the keyboard, are you not a touch typist?

Ever heard the phrase: "Death by Typing"?:D

I was never a good typist but after 3yrs of Aces,i find i can type just with left hand quite well,i think thatll change if i ever get enough bucks for a HOTAS tho :)

No because I dont use the home keys, and never rest my fingers on the keyboard.
You'd be surprised the havoc that moving my keyboard an inch too the left can wreak on my accuracy. :D

He included something much like that in his show.

Pro's like us fly with HOTAS and type with our feet.
But you must fear Citabria the most. His 11th digit is always ready to pounce on the reset button if you getting a shot on him.

I'm a donut!! yeah I type with just a few fingers and have to look at the keyboard.. but hey i am in region of 60wpm at least.
In the early days of Quake Team Fortress ya had to type fast to teammates or risk death +)
Also having done quite abit of online racing you learn to be quick +)

I remember watching AW films many years ago when I first started flying. This was way before VOX, as a matter of fact, before the http://WWW. They guy who made the film was typing away as he was in a fight. It amazed me. Not to mention in a big furball, the edges of the screens would fill up with icons and numbers. You had to watch these and try to figure out what dots in the center of the screen were enemy, tell if they were coming to or away from you by the way the numbers were going. All this, plus watching the text buffer and having on a conversation is something to see.
Now we have better resolution, Icons and range on the aircraft 3D sounds, VOX, joysticks with macros....We have it easy now:)

Typing while fighting was easy for mouse flyers. Just a quick double click on the left button would act like an autopilot and hold your plane in whatever attitude you were in (until you ran out of E or died :D ). I can remember many spiral climbs when I set it and then typed taunts until I ran out of E. Sometimes I do miss those days :D .

EA just happened to be at the helm when the ship went down. The gapping hole was punched in the side long before they took over.

Heard of it?? I thought it was attributed to me from my AW days.

"typing kills".. happens all the time
