I played compain on normal level as poland, took over whole russia, better part of europe. Then novogrod, germans Brits and french returned within 3 years en force and whole thing went down the drain :)

Btw, defensive posture really pays great dividends. Don't attakc unless you really have to.
Forests are great for infantry, and cavalery attack in the rear or enemy flank works great too.
AI ain't too dumb either.. :)

Extremely enjoyable game, particularly in campaign mode (I don't think the tactical game compares that well with current Napoleonic and modern games, like CMBB, but I've never tried an ancient/medieval tactical sim before).

I'm having a blast as the Danes- started out 1080 or whatever and have made it to 1357, grabbing Sweden, NOrway, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Wessex, Livonia, Portugal and Saxony.  Waiting for the Spanish or Russ to polish off the French so I can grab the rest of England, then rely on my mighty fleet to keep me safe.  Ahhhh, delusions of grandeur......

Hell Yes! It's starting to seriously cut into alot of my AH time, had it since it's release and still can't put it down. Still playing as the English on about my 5th campaign. Haven't even tried out any of the other factions yet.

Great game and best I've played since the original Civilization.

I was playing a campaign as the English last week and had already put the French and the Germans out of the game when those damn Almohads (who were supposed to be my ally) started assassinating my generals.  So I send in one little "expeditionary force" and next thing I know there are Almohads everywhere!!  :D  Didnt take long from that point to getting my arse handed to me.

Are you playing as a catholic country, Fishy?

If so, don't outright attack other catholic countries or the pope gets pissed.  You can still take over their territories by inciting revolts with spies.  After the peasants take over, invade and squash them.  The pope won't care then.

If you're a Catholic country you can also assassinate the opposing leader and the Pope apparently won't notice.  I whacked the French king and never heard a peep.

The game said he didn't have any heirs so if he died France would degenerate into factions but that didn't happen- wonder if there's some kind of bug on that point?

It really IS a fun game!!!

no matter who i play and even if i am being non-beligerent my guys are constantly catching papcy assassins - i build cathedrals and churches and i even make the 7-11s (run by the almohads of course) close on sundays!

i don't know what i did to make the catholics dislike lil ol me (snickers at the irony) :)

Heh...I was excommunicated....twice!  :D

I had a problem conquering Ireland from Scotland also.  Apparently, you cant move them back until you build a port there also....and it takes 4 years.  I had this huge army built up and moved them into Ireland and then they were stuck there until I finally got a port built.  It was ridiculous.  I mean, if they can land without a port why cant they get back on the ship?  I am still learning the nuances of using spies and bishops and stuff, but having a blast with it so far.

Nifty check out: http://www.totalwar.com to see what the talk is all about.

Well, I'm playing English (of course) on expert, cos normal got boring.  Wales went 1st, then Scotland......immediately built a fort in Scotland which allows me to train highlanders. :D  Ok, the English Army is now made up of 1000s of screaming men in kilts supported by 1 or 2 Welsh bowmen.

Prolly not what William Wallace had in mind.

Then came Ireland, followed by Norway and Sweden.  THEN ya start building ships and trading posts all over......pretty soon I've got an income of over 5k a year and it's time to take Granada from them orange fellas (but it's pronounced Gibraltar ;)).

Pretty soon my trading fleet has spread all over the Med and it's pretty clear now the Egyptians have far too much territory and the bulk of their army is kicking seven kinds of sh*t out of the Russians, they're down to 1 provice: Finland.  In I charge to Palestine and quickly rape and pillage the entire area, meanwhile the Egyptian army is moving south fast.....and it's a ******* big army.

Finally the two armies meet in Tripoli as I'm seiging a castle and I start to think I shoulda sent more archers......1490 of my lads v 7800 of theres.   Well, the Scots did great, 6000 killed, 700 lost and the Egyptian Pharoe captured (and executed).  The Russians are making a comeback up North and the Pope thinks I'm the Messiah.

We'll see what happens next......

Yah, Swoop, the kilties will do you proud against any infantry that stands still to receive their charge, and they move so fast they seem to blow right through light archers.  I've also launched them out of woods in a flank attack against some heavy horse that were melee-ing with my spearmen, and the haggis-eaters chopped 'em apart.

Very cheap to train, too.  With highlanders, longbowmen and some halbardiers you ought to be able to kick major turbanned butt!

Well the technology level has increased a bit since 1092.  Producing a major stockpile of chivalric knights, chivalric men at arms, arbelasters, billmen, longbowmen and....yet more highlanders to nerf the French back to the stone age.

ok guys, i need help.

Darn almondheads, their infantry is totally kick ass.
even in defensive posture i lose tons of people.
Seems that only unit that does well against almonhead is spearman, whihc i find kinda weird.

Any tips ?

Billmen or Halbardiers with longbowmen and pavice arbelasters behind em, men at arms on the flanks and some highlanders hiding in a forest in a position to come into the rear.

Maybe some heavy cav to chase em down......

Oh and check your general to make sure he hasnt got a morale reducing vice......if he has, get rid of him quick.
