I believe that I may have discovered why the PzKpfw IV appears to be so brittle when fired on by aircraft and Osties. Yesterday evening, I was driving a PzKpfw IV, and while I was on autopilot on my way to attack a base, I idly flipped from position to position. I noticed that the hull machine gunner position, unlike the driver's position, had a default head position up out of the hull, as if he was sitting with the seat raised all the way.
When I looked back, I saw something amazing, that absolutely blew me away -- I could see into the turret:

There is a gap that looks big enough to stick my hand into between the bottom of the turret and the top of the hull. If the polygon data represents the actual collision surface of the vehicle, then any HE shot that landed on the hull deck near the turret would get its blast effect passed into the interior of the tank, bypassing the armor completely. Similarly, machine-gun rounds striking the upper hull at the right angle could be deflected into the interior as they bounce off the upper hull armor.
The Ostwind, in comparison, does not have this gap between the hull and the turret:

If it's possible for damage to blow through into the tank through the gap between the hull and the turret, then it stands to reason that the PzKpfw IV is going to die easily to attacks from the Ostie and aircraft, when it shouldn't historically.

i have seen it several times, but i think its just a visual glich. Incomming shells and rounds would not know about visual stuff, just their programmed amount of damage.
I think its some kind of programming glich or done intentional by HTC to influence gameplay.
I have one question though.
Would an incomming round know that you are sitting on the turrets external AA MG position. A single 7.62 round would kill the "driver" if it hits him when exposed. If it does not, iI think it should be implemented for improved realism. Kinda like the pilot wound in planes.

hhhhhmmm... this explains why panzer lose its turret and start burning so easily and finally be destroyed by internal explosion...

How u get that pic of me and my panzer after I was strafed by that val last night?
Seriously I have killed Panzers engines with 7mm before( MG 34 to be exact from dead six about .5 out took most of the hull gun ammo but I got him, kinda lame imo)

Interesting! People have done tests with twin MG151/20 (FW190F8) fired from the ground just a 10 feet behind the tank and there was no damage to the Panzer IV even after all 500 rounds were fired into it, yet an MG34 from 500 yards out is able to kill the motor. How on earth is HTC modeling these tanks and weapons?

On several occatoins, I've sneaked up beside an enemy panzer and shot it to death with the 50 cal on the M3 point blank. I dont think I've gotten them to explode, but I'm able to disable both engine and turret.
Perhaps my M3 carried a bazooka team.
I that's the case, where is the bazooka team on the P47? are they hanging onto the wings?

Im glad we have a new Panzer tank around. I guess the M4 Sherman will be next. So many variations on the Sherman. I'm still hoping for the land battle aspect to be even more detailed and modeled such as in Panzer Elite. Fingers crossed.

If a Panzer 4 gets killed by an Mg34 wounder what is needed for the Sherman? We just look at it and it burst into flames? :D
"STOP LOOKING AT MY TANK YOU STUPID DWEEB!!!"

This tank experienced a catastrophic ammunition explosion and its turret was blown off by the explosion. This is the reason that the early M4s were nicknamed the "Ronson" (after the cigarette lighter). Americans' nickname for the Sherman was the "Zippo" (lights first time, everytime), while the Germans called it the "Tommy Cooker" :D

lol, ya you're right. I meant to point out that the P47 can pierce armour with it's .50 cals
