jets are not for sissies you just dont know how to pilot a jet

and it would be cool having F18's F14's tornado's etc etc battling it out

It is not a bad idea, but there are a lot of factors working for the success of on-line simulation games. :)

For one thing, the immersion factor particularly derives from distinct historic events. Modern day jets are interesting and fantastic in their own field, but the limited warfare they went through is very lacking in terms of immersiveness when compared to the second world war.

The second World War was a sequel to the "war to end all wars" in a much larger scale, millions of soldiers clashing all over the world.

The air battles of these vintage era planes were also spectacular... giant squadrons of aircraft clashing over flak bursting skies.. hundreds of massive and shiny four-engined bombers in formation.. German planes baring in like a spike into those formations... flames in the sky.. planes falling down.. a raging torpedo planes and dive bombers flying through ack firing like flames of armageddon... you can probably understand what I'm saying. ;)

The WWII air warfare has an epic scale which appeals to even the people whose country never participated in the war. This, is something modern day jet-fighters can never have.

Another thing is, the limitations in WWII airplanes have ironically designated  the "up, close and personal" aspect of air combat. No on-board radar(well.. AH does have AWACS :D ), no electronics, no gadgets and devices, and no missiles. The fight depends all on human eyes and skill, and this apparently appeals much stronger to many people than looking through the HUD, reading the numbers and boxes, and pressing the button to release a missile, killing a target 5km away.

 ...

If a modern-day jet on-line sim is ever to be successful, its going to need a warfare large enough for people decades later to remember it as "an epic struggle.." Thank heaven such a thing hasn't happened yet.

There have been 3 Major WWII online flight sims so far. A couple of WWI online sims with varing success, and a variety of boxed games dealing with one or the other world wars.

Show me ONE modern era online sim where you fly a F-14 - f22?

The only one even in development is based on the Korea early jets. While some of the boxed games have a following for a while, the Jets just are NOT that popular.

Things happen too fast in AH, imagine 500 F14's rdy to launch Missles at 100 miles range at the drop of a hat?

That world moves TOO fast, has seen very little actual combat. How many pilots became aces between 1940 & 1945? Korea saw a few aces, Vietnam a few more but they were few & far between. Since then I think we've only added a couple of Aces to the list.

Frankly some days I wish HT had never modeled the 262.
I'll stick with AH & WWII thank you.

We have several modern fighter pilots and commercial airline pilots in our ranks.

We frequently call them sissies and pummel them if they try to argue the point.

Actually, the Phoenix was designed to shoot down Soviet bombers, not fighters; its maneuverability is limited, particularly at the end of its range after the engine has burned out and the missile is essentially gliding.

This will happen when HTC models Swasticas, atomic bombs, and the gladiatior.

You are assuming a long range shot. The AIM-54 does not have to be shot at that range. You are also ignoring the fact that in order for a fighter sized target to evade the missile, it needs to be able to detect it in time to do something about it.

Wasn't there something called 'Lock On-Modern Air Combat' or similar under development? There's definately one lurking out there somewhere.

...Google is great  :D

Lock on homepage (http://www.lo-mac.com/)

I do find the prospect of A2A fights in A10's appealing  :)
