Nice pics, Natedog

Nice looking airplane, right down to the Northrop designed retractable landing gear (from a fighter design sold to Vought, who then sold it to Japan in 1937, the V-143). The similarity of the landing gear to the SBD is not accidental. Both gear layouts were designed by the same man, Ed Heinemann, who worked for Jack Northrop, and later, Donald Douglas. Heinemann was the lead designer on just about everything made by Douglas from 1939, through the early 1960s.
Anyway, a few months ago I listened to Miracle at Midway by Gordon W. Prange on CD (great while commuting to and from work). The reader must have thought that "Kate" was a Japanese word, because he kept pronouncing it at as "Kah-tay".
Lol.

Brady, I get these from my local public library. Our library is huge, being the central depot library for the region. However, you should be able to track down a copy on CD or cassette tape via inter-library loan. Visit with your library reference deck for assistance if it is not already part of their collection.
You can also rent it on cassette from Books on Tape here:
Miracle at Midway (http://www.booksontape.com/bookdetail.cfm/2070)
CDs are made from the cassettes by our library. This eliminates the common wear and breakage encountered with tapes. It's actually easier to listen to tapes than CDs. This is because you can restart a tape where you stopped it. With a CD you have to toggle through the tracks and try to find exactly where you left off. It's a pain in the neck, especially in traffic.
My regards,
Widewing

Oh man, awesome idea, Wide!
I'm working my way through "Dawn" right now. 300 pages down, 300 to go. Great book, but damned if I can pronouce all those Japanese names.
I've got to get to the library and see what they have.

Another hanger queen.
It's beautiful and everything but why?
How about the Grace? Something that might survive in the MA.
A Gekko or Nick (not NIK2).
-
I like it, I think it will be a good addition to AH. Also you have to understand though there arn't a ton of planes that can stand up to 1945 standards. The only planes that I can think of that could be modeled that would be extreamly competitive is about 18 or 19, and then again would there be any exitement when new versions came out? No, I really dought there would be as much exitment if HTC modeled all the 45 planes in one package. Me myself i personally like the way they introduce one late war plane per update; take for example we are getting the Me-163 Komet this time, and the Komet is a late war plane that did 450MPH had 2x 30mm cannons you can't ask for much better than that.
Thanx HTC u did a great job,
NOD2000

It's beautiful and everything but why?
Because we have special events, not just the MA.
-
Yes, it does complete the Japanese Midway planeset.
Too bad we have nothing resembling the US Midway planeset to oppose it.

But we are getting there - slow but sure.
I realize that the PLANES we want for historical Scenarios may not be on the top of most other peoples list - or evens HT's list !
What we get when we get them works for me.
THANKS !

I cant wait to fly it!!! whats bomb/torpedo load on it?
-
1 x 800kg bomb (AP or HE)
2 x 250kg bombs
6 x 60kg bombs (up to 7 x 60kg bombs)
1 x 800kg torpedo (Type 91 Mod 1 or Mod 2 or Mod 3)
Defensive Armament:
1 x 7.7mm flexible gun at dorsal turret (582 rounds)
B5N2's Mission role would be:
Level-bombing
Torpedo attack
Soft dive-bombing
-
I thought the b5n2 had two forward 7.7s as well...
(B5N2) Twin 7.7 mm machine guns, in rear cockpit
Two x 7.7 mm machine guns, fixed, above forward fuselage
Fuselage centreline rack for one 800 kg (18-inch) torpedo or 3 x 250 kg bombs.
But I find many references that say only 1 rear firing gun...
-
no, it doesn't have any fixed forward guns.
-
It is my understanding that no offensive guns were caried.

Please see this thread for another discushion on the "Kate",:

It might not get used much use in the MA but in ToDs, CAP, Scenarios, CT, etc. it will see lots of action.
The F4U-4 is much more of a hanger queen than the Kate will be.
-
No forward guns!
What kind of third rate firm designs a plane with no forward guns!
How are you supposed to kill spits in this crate?
Can I sell the planes in my hanger I dont use on Ebay?
-
Dear Puuh (Pooh21) not every bomber/divebomber is supposed to be a turnfighter (like ur Ju88) to kill spits :D
-
Montazuma and Daddog,
How's that Val doing??
As far as the F4U-4 goes. Check with the perk system.
What can the Kate do that the Grace could not in scenarios?? It is typical to use substitute planes in scenarios. At least that way you might see one in the MA for something other than a novelty act.

It is hard to tell if the Val has more sorties than the F4U-4 in the MA. Of course, this is due to the high perk cost of the F4U-4.
But there is no contest between the two as to which has been used more in events so far.

I took the liberty of quoting ,Oboe, from the CT forum discusing this issue:
You can't argue with the fact that the Japanese are being given apparently the earliest possible model of attack planes while the U.S. forces are being given much later-war models. WTH? What conclusions are we supposed to draw from that?
I know you Allied flyers don't pick which models are introduced, and I'm sure you're happy with what you get. But believe me, it would be in your best long term interest to also encourage HTC to give the Japanese flyers better equipment and choices in the game, because frankly its pretty discouraging. You guys could end up with no dedicated opposition in the PTO.
Good grief, the LW is so far developed they're down to getting the Me163 rocket plane, and the IJAAF is STILL without its best fighter of the war.
-
This just in, HTC has suspended production of all planes at this point. From now on, if the plane doesn't meet the prior approval of every denizen of this BBS, HTC will not put the time and effort into creating the plane.
From the above, and given the few whines about the Kate, it has been scrapped for now.
