On November 6th we will be informed as to the low voter turnout. We will be admonished by the media in their parental way. Of course, it will be true. The right to vote just doesn’t have any value so people just don’t vote.
I offer the following for your consideration. The only people that should have the right to vote should be those who have a stake in America. That stake would include those that own land such as a home or farm and those that have served in America’s military. I can see no reason why anyone outside this group should have a “right” they are unwilling to commit to or defend. And as they demonstrate election after election even when they have the right they refuse to exercise it.

You mean dead people can't vote??? :(
-
Time of the year to once again set up my "end womens sufferage" booth up outside of Wall-mart.

Rip said:You mean dead people can't vote???
Ummmm,er,aaa, you could say this would limit the democratic plot(I can't believe I said it) to get out the vote.
It will be harder for Chicago democrats to dig-up votes.
-
oz thats one way to guarantee that the system will never work for those who it isn't working for now.
I don't know any body who doesn't own their own land out of 'fear of comitment'
on second thought this must be a troll, nobody could be that ignorant and make it on the net. never mind

To you I would say KISS MY ASS!
I didn't serve in the military and I don't own land yet.
Stupid idea.....
How about only taxpayers vote? Then maybe I'll agree.....
-
We all have the right to VOTE and I will be voting, I do not own land right now, nor have I served.
Strangely I am pretty angry over your suggestion, it is wrong on many levels.
Gee, bone the poor cause they can't afford land. Just cause you are poor does not mean you do not vote.
Jeez, I have allot of respect for the people who served their country, all the males in my family have, including 1 who fought as a paratrooper in WW2 and only missed the Dday drop because he broke his leg in a practice drop. My granddad was on the Tennessee on dec 7 1941, he lived through the whole war, mostly on DDEs.
If you served and you think your better then those who did not, you are a fool, what exactly where the guys who fought fighting for, more rights for themselves?
The more I think about this the more it make me mad.
I said "lol no way" at the beginning, now its NO FU#$%$&!!! way.

I think folks should just be quiet and do what I tell them to do

As much as it seems like a troll, land ownership as a prerequisite for voting franchise was common in US and other countries with developing democracy. OZ probably got that idea from reading Founding Fathers.
It does not make much sence now. Why my $100,000 in the bank are worse than your $100,000 in land? As for military service - it's a good point. If you are privileged to vote for policies that can get your country into a war - agressive or defencive, you should be ready to bear full responcibility.

It's irrelevant what they were fighting for - they did not have any choice in the matter. The choice they had (and only one that matters in democracy) was in electing the government which could declare war or not. The real merit of that generation was not that they fought but that they elected government with guts.

First... make election day a national holiday.
Second... make voting compulsory. Hand out fines to people that don't vote.
IMHO, voting is a reponsibility, not a privilege.
FWIW, I'm a veteran and I own a home. :p
-
Sandman_SBM: IMHO, voting is a reponsibility, not a privilege.
That does not make sense - if a person does not feel informed to do the right choice for good, he should not vote so that he does not do harm.
In a scirmish your orders are to shoot the enemy if you can see one or at least are fairy sure which direction the enemy is - not empty the magazine whichever way as long as you do not bring ammo home.

Doesn't Australia have a compulsory election? Have to ask them if the ignorant vote in groups or if they tend to cancel each other out.
I'm betting it's the latter.
-
Nah, it's even easier...
If you vote, you get to b*tch.
If you didn't vote, you are fined anytime you b*tch about the government, and the more you b*tch, the more you have to pay.
;)
Maybe we could eliminate taxes this way!
-
When you take the oath of service you make doing the governments will your job, that should not give you anymore rights then the average Joe who does not do the same thing.
It does not matter if you die because of your choice, it was your choice.
The draft is different, but you still elected the politician who sent us to a place the draft was needed to deal with.

I'm looking forward to our new fancy chadless computer screen votin booths :)
then I'm gonna stand outside and turn away the democrats :)

I LIKE IT! :D

It should be this way. Whatever party is in power can decide who gets to vote, based on their ideals.
By interview or test, you get voting rights if you qualify. If you dont, you are not considered a full citizen and are not allowed to leave the country.

I can see no reason why simply anyone in the military has earned their right to vote. Those guys who sit on their cans doing nothing more than training excercises for the 3-4 years they are in the service earns them more of a right to vote than someone who did not want to sit on their can doing nothing more than training excercises for 3-4 years?
What about those people who work for the federal government... I'd assume by the same token, they have more of a right to vote than anyone else out there...

I could agree with that. Then again, voter turn-out is so low anyway that restricting access to the booth would probably just reduce turn-out even more and we'd end up with Bush in the White House again.
-
but.... we all agree that it is essential to end womens sufferage tho right?

What is a OZkansas
Is that like what Kansas is like after the drugs you take to be able to stand living there?:D
-
...but not everyone goes into the military because they are patriotic - some go to get college money or health coverage for their kids or because their parents kicked them out or because they don't have any useful skills or a high enough aptitude for a job in the competitive market.
and not every land owner is a citizen or even cares about america.
what a stupid idea - how can i vote against you?

Get em!!

True voting is compulsary here... that way you can't complain about who gets voted in can you!
I'd say a some vote the along party lines...There are plenty of 'safe' seats (ie. areas that will have heavy support of a particular party) but plenty of seats have marginal support and often change. People will vote an independant or minor party to show their disatisfaction with the performance of a major party or simply vote for the opposing party contesting the seat.

The real problem with voting is that, it doesn't really matter who gets elected. Whoever you elect, the outcome is going to be similar. Sure some details might be changed, some differences will happen, but it's all irrelavent.
It's those who contribute large sums of money to politics that are in control, they simply allow politicians to buy votes, in exchange for favors.
In a true democracy, voting would be important, but in our current system, whats going to happen is going to happen regardless of who you vote for.
-
Iraq had compulsory voting and had a 100% turnout! No dimpled chads either! Let's adopt their system...
