First prototype Me210 fighters.

Two engines for props and two electric motors to turn rearward firing guns :D

i thought the Me210 was a single tail bird...maybe the He274 or Ju290 were used as night fighters (doubtful on the Ju290 - it was no good above 20000')

The first prototype, the Me 210 V1, flew on September 5, 1939. It was powered by two Daimler-Benz DB 601A-1 engines each rated at 1050 hp for takeoff. The airplane was initially fitted with twin fin-and- rudder tail assembly. In early flight tests, the airplane displayed extremely unsatisfactory handling characteristics, and suffered from both directional and longitudinal instability. At first, it was thought that the twin fin-and-rudder assembly was at fault, and the prototype was hastily refitted with a very large centrally-mounted vertical tail and a tapered tailplane of increased span.

There were no 4-engined Luftwaffe fighters, only bombers.

This could be: The He 274, the Ju 290 and the Me 264. Also the later variants of the He 277 were twin tailed.

The He-177 was four engined.  Each nacelle had two 12-cylinder inverted Vee DB 605 coupled to one propellor.  It looked like 2 engines, but it was actually four.

He-177 (http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/he177/orig_he177_a5.jpg)  in FS2002 and 3D-drawing (http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/he177/Typenblatt2.jpg).
Only one rudder thought.

hmm if the book was fictional maybe the planes were too.
There were strange plans to build a carrier-plane (mothership if you like).

Last year I was in Hannover (Germany) on a business trip. There is a very nice privately owned aviation museum there with some nice a/c's and replicas. They also have a HUGE collection of scale models of virtually every German WWII aircraft. also of the rare and odd ones and some prototypes. The Daimler Benz 'mothership' was one of 'em. An old guy has a little shed in the museum and does these things as a hobby.

I made a lot of pictures there, some of them quite good. If anyone is interested I can post them here or mail them.
