Title: When to Scissor ?
Post by: 28sweep on October 31, 2002, 06:47:23 AM
I've always considered the Scissor a last ditch manuver when you are on the deck and have run out of options.  The problem is-I fly the F4u-1 and 70% of the time-when I scissor-I will eventualy stall and auger.  Is it wise to use the Scissor as a first option in a furball when sombody has set up on you?  It seems like it will make you vulnerable to the gang-bang.  Oh ya-I'm talking horizontal scissors here........

Use Horz sissors when con is on your 6 and

A Faster than you
B in a slower rolling plane.

You are correct in that useing a horz sissors in a furball can get you dead. But then you were going to be dead anyway, so what do you have to lose?

Horz sissors are designed to make a single faster con behind you overshoot, gives you a chance to get more distance, or turn the fight back into a nose to nose fight.

Key isn't to just keep doing sissors, start small, build em till con gets out of phase, once he is off your wingtip you can complete the turn. He is no longer on your 6.

Bear in mind that you are going to get slow so be careful about trying a horizontal scissors against an a/c that handles better than you at low speed.

Great Explanation Ghosth  :)

also something that works with a good/great rolling plane,  is as you start getting the opponent out of phase, when you get to where you both are crossing each others path, right as you see/sense that your oponent is blind/out of sight of you throw in an extra roll into the same direction he his manuevering, this will really confuse him making him have to think/look/find you, not where he was going to expect you to be, in a basic Horizontal type scissors. It don't work all the time, but on ocassion it will give you added seperation/ a 6 shot/ or at least give you the upper hand...

scissors come in different flavors...

Traditionally Scissors are utilized as a defensive move against a higher speed bogie. The closer the energy states the less useful the scissors are. As ghosth mentioned roll rate is also a factor..the quicker rolling plane sets up faster on each reverse. One of the biggest points of confusion is the difference between defensive scissors and a "scissors fight". Lets say your being bounced by high speed con...you break left to deny a shot and he mirrors in a hi yoyo and you break back right to deny the second shot as he initiates a follow on attack...thats a scissors...now if he rolls 90 degree's away and goes up he's denied the overshoot and you don't want to continue a scissor...on the otherhand lets say he does another hi yoyo and comes in again...your now in a rolling scissors fight. At that point the plane who's slower (maintaining enough E for manuvering as needed) can force an overshoot. Thats what makes the jug such an outstanding scissors plane. Great roll rate good low speed handling with flaps and massive firepower up close.

As a side note I use scissors at alt all the time. For some reason alot of guys don't protect the overshoot as well at alt as they would on the deck. In addition if you screw the pooch you can let her tumble and then recover once the shots denied and just dive out of trouble....great in F6 etc.
