Logic would say Georgia, but the SEC is not logical this year.:) I wouldn't be suprised if Florida pulls it off.
-
Zook is an idiot and he's ruining the Gators. He'll be gone next year. Makes me wish Galen Hall was back.
-
What's the buzz down in florida? What is zook doing wrong other than not winning like Spurrier in his first season?
-
hoping the Gators pull it off
dunno the difference but something is missing from the team this year
unity, focus - dunno - just seems like they can't put together 4 quarters of good, offensive football in the same game
Go Gators!
-
Yeah, blame it all on Zook. Just make sure you keep that offensive coordinator though. I'd like at least two good shots at you before you figure out that's your problem. ;)
Seriously, Spurrier's gone and the Florida offense fell off. You can blame it only on Zook in the fact he's the one that brought Marshall's offensive coordinator in. That guy is the reason Florida isn't Florida this year. He's bringing in an incredibly complex system that's extremely different than the Fun N Gun. The Fun N Gun isn't that complex. It relies a lot on timing. The QB reads the defense as he takes the snap and can pretty much tell if the primary read will work. If it looks good he throws it and the receiver breaks to the ball. Usually results in a completion and some great yardage. If it doesn't look good he progresses to the second read (if there is one for the play) and then the safety valve. If it's not a timing route, Spurrier would put the reads on different depths of the field, but on the same side. It makes the progressions easier to go through, plus floods a zone. With all of that as a possibility, the real effectiveness of the Fun N Gun is being able to run the ball. If the RBs couldn't get it going, the defense could sit back on the pass and shut Florida down.
Now you've got these kids who were comfortable with a system that's fantastic for college football trying to learn a complex system that's tremendously different (and not all that effective.) They aren't going to execute it efficiently, nor will the look confident while on offense. Ol' Rexxie looks damn lost out there at times.
You want to fix the Gators this season? You need to get someone that can coordinate the Fun N Gun, or something similar. Otherwise you're going to have to wait until the offense learns the new system and is comfortable with it.
Fire Zook after this season and you'll have another year of growing pains to deal with. The reason Miami did so well after Butch left is because the rest of the staff stayed intact, and they run the same offense and defense. Miami just didn't change.
At FSU we lost our Heisman senior and our offensive coordinator (and our top recruiter as well.) The offense has been very inconsistent, lacks cohesion and confidence. Blame it on baby Bowden for the system and blame it on Papa Bowden for letting the team get divisive on who should be playing QB. the first half wasn't Rix's fault against ND. The second half was. He saw that no one was helping (not the playcalling and damn sure not Morgan at receiver) so in the second half he slipped back into the "I've got to do it all to win" mode and sure enough, the turnovers started happening.
Point is, you have system turnover (UF and FSU) and you'll have issues for a year, maybe two. You don't have system turnover (Miami) and you'll keep trucking along.

Georgia, most FL teams suck, and are over-rated.
-
great analysis Rip. Top notch even.

Thank you! Fortunately, about 4 million people agree with me (PAC 10)
-
heh, do we need to dig up the past Pac-10 thread? The one that shows your bowl winning percentage is below 50% for the past 10 years? Or the one that shows the out of conference showings for this year?
oh wait, we're not allowed to only count one year, or even two. That's not a trend. :p

Dawgs are plagued with injuries in key positions, around 70,000 rabid drunk gator fans. I go with the Dawgs I got a feeling it is their year regardless to what Munson thinks.

That's the problem - the offensive players don't know the offense, and in college there really isn't a lot of time to pick it up. Keep in mind that these players are also students with all the responsibilities of a normal college student - class, projects, labs, research, papers, exams - and trying to pick up a new scheme is going to take time. Unfortunately, the fans don't have that much patience.

Exactly. Spurrier was known for being a pass offense genius, but the stats showed that he ran the ball about half the time. If he couldn't run the ball effectively, then half his offense was gone and that's when you started seeing the interceptions. For the last couple of years, the games the Gators lost were due to poor rushing attacks. Tennessee knew it, Auburn knew it, and pretty soon just about everybody else did too.

Who's gonna win florida/georgia game?
I predict it'll be the team that scores the most points... but I could be wrong.

As a former college football player I think I am qualified in a small way to say this. The offense can be as confusing or as simple as the Offensive Coordinator (OC) wants it to be. I have a few acquaintances who have played for Steve "Superior" Spurrier and the general consensus is exactly as Nifty posted earlier. When he left and took his playbook so went the Gator's offense. The guy they brought in is not a bad coach but he ran one hell of a complicated offense at Marshall and decided to bring it south with him. From what I have seen the backup (Ingle[?] Martin) looks solid as a freshman and should be able to step in and play when Grossman leaves this year for what I predict will be his Eric Crouch like debut in the NFL. Maybe when Martin finally graduates from UF you will see a solid UF QB make it to the league.
I think if the "fans" of Gator football will let Zook and Co. have a little time to get adjusted then they will be right back in the saddle as the king of the SEC East in a couple of years. I don't think Zook will be gone at the end of this year or even at the end of the next two seasons. You nailed the entire crux of the problem at UF or anywhere else on the head; "the fans don't have that much patience." I read or heard a comment recently that Jermey Foley (AD @ UF) actually reads and responds to almost all of the letters/emails he gets about Zook and looks up the person named in the return address to see #1 if they are a season ticket holder and #2 where they are sitting. If they are not a big time UF supporter or season ticket holder he will not put much stock in their complaint.
One last thing; don't fool yourself on thinking the majority of the guys on the football team are really busting their butt getting class work done. Even when I played at a lowly beginning program (UAB) as an athlete you are given a bit of special privilege and more leeway than other students. Plus with the 20 hour a week rule the NCAA has in place it is specifically broken down on the amount of time you have for meetings/film during the season. In the off-season is when you learn 75% or more of the schemes and watch the film. Then you don't have to record anything other than actual off-season drills (conditioning practices). Also the NCAA can not regulate a player wanting to get a "highlight" film of the other team or his past games and watch it at his dorm/apartment with the rest of the defense/offense sitting around with him.
As for who wins I call it Georgia over Florida 35-14.

Who gives a hoot about what the PAC 10 thinks. They play a sport that almost looks like football.

Interesting post Reschke. Thanks for the info. Nice to know we have a former 1A college player here. :)
Good call ammo. That was a good game huh? 4 of the 8 unbeatens go down today. I was pulling for Grossman. :) He's a great QB. I guess Zook goes from zero to hero now huh? ;)

great game
now they just have to beat FSU and the season will be complete
oh yeah , ga lose again and fl win out would be nice too :)
Go Gators!

Where'd all the college football fans go? Get back here!
Does anybody think Tennessee could pull out a win over Miami? Remember, they're playing at Neyland stadium. I don't know what to think about this one. I think Miami might just blow 'em out.
Thoughts? :)

Only because you guys have crafted the fine art of illegal HS acquisitions...our guys try to follow suit but end up getting busted :(
