Title: IL2 or CFS3?
Post by: gofaster on November 05, 2002, 08:17:44 AM
I'm thinking of picking up a stand-alone flight sim for single-player action when the wife has the cable connection for class or work.  Which of these two sims should I get?

I've heard bad things about CFS3 but IL-2 has been out for a year now and I'm wondering how it compares to Aces High.  Any comments?

Take Il2 every day of the week and twice on sundays :)

Seriously I have them both and in terms of fm, damage model and graphics il2 wins all the way. People are raving over the cFS dynamic campaign but I'm not impressed so far. Despite being a year down the line Il2 is state of the art and the Forgotten Battles expansion is coming soon which will push it even further (as well as add it's own dynamic campaign and some needed FM fixes). As far as machine load CFS3 seems to take just as much as il2 and doesn't look as good. The only adavantage it has for me is that it is western front sim (since I'm more interested in that than the eastern front).

I'd say by January.. maybe December SirLoin.

That's the one you wanna wait for, you can purchase Il2/FB packaged together when FB comes out.

I never get into the dynamic campaigns in stand-alone sims.  I figure if I want to be a part of a larger war, I'll log onto Aces High.  My main interest is to have something to fly for an hour or two, build some missions, install some add-ons, that sort of thing.  CFS3 doesn't have a mission editor, which is why I'm now looking at IL-2.

I'd be willing to buy every sim Maddox Games put's out.

The only thing I dont like about IL-2 is AI silliness, I've played online and Aces High Destroys IL-2 Online. I wish my other computer had better specs so i could play Lan, Currently Im Brainwashing my friends in Lan games of Aces High.

I played CFS3 exclusively for about a week before writing my review, and I thought "wow this game does grow on you". But then I loaded up Il-2 for the first time in a few weeks today and I was blown away all over again, by graphics, FM and FPS. CFS3 doesn't grow on you - it simply lowers your standards as you spend time with it.
