Welcome to the 21st century

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Using a high-energy laser weapon developed by TRW Inc, the U.S. Army said it shot down an artillery shell in flight on Monday for the first time ever in a test over New Mexico.
The Army and TRW said in a joint announcement that the laser tracked, locked onto and fired a burst of concentrated light energy photons at the artillery projectile in flight at the service's White Sands, New Mexico, test range.
"Seconds later, at a point well short of its intended destination, the projectile was destroyed," the Army's Space and Missile Defense Command said in a news release.
The Mobile Tactical High Energy Laser (MTHEL) is being developed by TRW for the Army and the Israeli Defense Ministry and has been used in past tests to shoot down slower Katyusha Rockets similar to those fired at Israel by militant guerrilla groups.

"Well, I finally have aircraft"
"Stealth fighters baby!"
"Cannons?"
"Yeah, that would be pretty cool if I didn't have ANTI-ARTILLARY LAZERS!"
"..."

damnit I had the same idea, only against missiles, and mounted on aircraft in turrets. I should sue the Army, but I don't have a patent :(

Rip! It's LASER, never LAZER.
Say Hi to Mrs. Rip and the Riplets. :)

US military technology testing lost all it's credibility with the last series of starwars tests. i dont need to look deeper into this to know the test results were predetermined
