Title: Don't Like a Thread? Here's a sure-fire way to lock it down
Post by: Sandman on November 06, 2002, 08:46:29 AM
I will say again, personal attacks will not be tolerated on this bulletin board. If you feel the need to do so, take it someplace else. - Skuzzy

Please keep your attacks general and non-specific. :)

It was the last post of the pizza map thread in the general discussion forum... but he's said much the same in a few locked threads recently.

Oh yes,..by all means, personal attacks will close a thread.  And when the closer has enough points, then he wins a free trip out the door.

he said personal attacks, not specific attacks.

meaning you can attack someone's points all you want, but attacking the person who made the post is bad.

you can be as specific as you want in refuting a point tho.

:p

when you start attacking someone personally you are really out of the discussion anyway.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but if I had to be attacked on a personal level, I would prefer it to be out in the open on this board.  Now please hear me out.  This has not happened to me on the board, and believe me, this board is one of the most civil and respectful ones I've seen...especially when compared to some college boards I've visited.  They act like 12 year olds...truly disheartening.

Imo, most participants here are mature and reasonable in their arguments.

Another thing to keep in mind is, you post at your own risk, i.e. don't dish it out if you aren't willing to take it.  Most folks here understand that.  Also, there's nothing in the rules that says you can't just walk away from any argument by saying, "We agree to disagree."

A potential problem which may arise from locked threads, is the e-mail feature located in the Profiles section, which, as Ripsnort has pointed out in an earlier thread, enables registered members to send e-mails to each other.  I would not be at all surprised if this was sometimes used to convey ill feelings...where the wrong people might read it, and then it truly does become personal.  I'm sure there are some in here who won't tolerate that either.

I say, keep it open and honest on the board.  If someone gets your goat, just consider the source and wish them a nice day.

An ordinary man will draw his sword when ridiculed and will fight risking his life, but he may not be called a courageous man.  A truly great man is not disturbed even when suddenly confronted with an unexpected event or crisis, nor angered upon finding himself in situations not of his own making, and this is because he has a great heart and his aim is high. ---- Gichin Funakoshi

Thank you.

Les

I am the one Skuzzy is refering to (see pizza map post)

While I did apologize for my statement long before the thread was closed, Im forced to wonder:  How did the Voss posts get so far along with them closing?  They sure as hell seemed like personal attack gangbangs to me.

Either way, stupid mistake on my part.  Think before you type.

Use pictures for personal attacks instead.  For instance, if you have to resort to personal attackes then this chart is applicable to you ("YOU" marked in red, would be the one using personal attacks)

When you wrote the post is irrelevant -   I had finally seen enough of your insulting posts directed at my friends, other members, and myself.  I admit, as stated in the thread, that I was wrong for what I said and I apologized.  Im not sure what else you expect from me?

If your aim is to drag the issue on Im sorry to say Ill have no part in it.  Im not to keen about being a punching bag for the "BBS Elite."  I dont spend the majority of my day browsing the BBS and as such I wont even begin to attempt to reply to the massive amount of juvenile crap this would spawn.

As a side note, I had mentioned to one of your squadmates how I was aprehensive about posting a public apology and would have rather spoken to you privately because I assumed the usual suspects would show up to dish out their trademark one-liners belittling my honest regret for my behavior.  Simply scroll up to Ripsnort's obviously well thought out post to see an example of what Im talking about.

When someone states an opinion I dont feel that he/she should be immediately rediculed and made fun of.  In addition, I feel that unless you bring a valid point to the dicussion you have no place being a part of it.  There are a core group of members on the boards that do exactly this - they lurk around and post roadkill, insulting, and belittling remarks for their own amusement.  You sir are one of the worst - but that still doesnt excuse my remark.  That said, if you need a repetition of my apology I suggest you simply reread the post.

Feel free to Email me if you wish to discuss this any further.

I read my post in that thread.  Please tell me which one of your friends I insulted by saying "400 people in the MA to 5 boycotters".  I find it funny that many others used the term whiners and went on various different tirades, but you chose to focus on that statement.

And that somehow, you still feel justified with your response.

My god man... do you even read what you post?  Who is being critical here?  Who is being jeuvenile here?

I'm sorry.  I'm not ripsnort.  Ripsnort and I don't have meetings discussing ways to dig on you.  We seldomely even agree on much.

I don't really care much about what was said there.  I'm just suprised that right after you go on that tirade where you call me all sorts of names and say what you said, you hop into another thread where I haven't even posted and start flaming me again.

Dude...  once again... read your own posts.

Ah... yes.  Once again... I ask you to read your own posts.  I would particularly like you to find where I've belittle anyone in any of the threads you've responded to lately.  Please... feel free.  And I'd like you to find where I've said anything that compares to what you have said about me in this thread.

Nah... not much of a point.  I can see that I am constantly belittling people that don't deserve it while you are merely belittling people that do.

Must be nice to be so right.

I cant believe I wasted my time reading your response.  I was really hoping for something worthwhile, but you never disapoint apparently.

"I read my post in that thread. Please tell me which one of your friends I insulted by saying "400 people in the MA to 5 boycotters". I find it funny that many others used the term whiners and went on various different tirades, but you chose to focus on that statement."

When did I say anything about that particular post as insulting anyone I knew or me?  When did I state that it was the primary example?

Whiners are fine - I have a much bigger problem with those that speak down to the whiner  ::cough::

"And that somehow, you still feel justified with your response."

Read again:  "You sir are one of the worst - but that still doesnt excuse my remark."

"My god man... do you even read what you post? Who is being critical here? Who is being jeuvenile here?"

This is just a stab in the dark, but Im guessing you couldnt think of anything to say here?

"I'm sorry. I'm not ripsnort. Ripsnort and I don't have meetings discussing ways to dig on you. We seldomely even agree on much. "

So what?

"I don't really care much about what was said there. I'm just suprised that right after you go on that tirade where you call me all sorts of names and say what you said, you hop into another thread where I haven't even posted and start flaming me again."

Figured I'd beat you to the punch.

"Dude... once again... read your own posts"

Dude... once again... read my post again.

"Show me where I did this in the post where you were so obnoxious?"

Again, where did I state that that particular post was the reason for my reaction?

"Ah... I see. And you are the one that gets to sit back and decide what is and is not a valid point."

When did I say I get to decide what is a valid point and what is not?  It should be obvious to the casual onlooker.

"O.K. I see where this is going."

Ummm... ok.

"Ah... yes. Once again... I ask you to read your own posts."

Weve already discovered that the comprehension problem is not on my end.

"I would particularly like you to find where I've belittle anyone in any of the threads you've responded to lately."

I dont think the server has the bandwidth.

"And I'd like you to find where I've said anything that compares to what you have said about me in this thread."

Disregarding the Voss threads I dont think I could.  You do understand thats why I apologized right?  Somehow Im beginning to think I wasted my breath doing so...

OK.. I got it now.

You criticize a post in a thread and insult me in the process, but its OK because you weren't actually criticizing that post per se, despite of what you said during the criticism... even taking the time to count how many other posts occured in that thread.

Got it now.

You need to get some help dude.  seriously.
