Title: easy fix to help warps and lag...
Post by: Gwjr2 on November 06, 2002, 03:11:41 PM
Make AH broadband only or at least a room for it. If you have dialup sorry move outta the sticks and get cable or DSL, and if its a money issue get mommy to pay up. Better yet get a better job if 20 more dollars a month is a prob, you got no biz spending it on games. muuuuuuhahahaahaha

:p

:D

this has been a test, a test of the warp emergency whine, if this had been a act. whine well you no the rest.

Im bored outta me mind in Alaska for 2 weeks cant play
dont know if can make it.................

Hmmm...you do know that a bad DSL or cable connect is just as bad as a bad dial-up connect can be?

I flew with dial-up for 8 years untill 2 weeks ago...never been called a warper, was never accused of being invisable, hardly ever had rubber ammo and only lost UDP 3 times.

Since I got DSL I've lost connect 5 times, each one was preceded by a UDP loss.

To get to the point, quit ragging on users because they are limited to dial-up...or, better yet, start ragging on the broadband users that have crappy connects also.

MMOG games like AH don't 'need' a fast connect, I used to keep my modem limited to 28.8 for AH. What IS important is the quality and consistancy of the connect.

lastly, cable connects are notorious for inconsistant connects...especialy during prime time.

No need to go that far.

Your average modem user, who has found a decent ISP isn't a problem.

It's the inexcusably bad connections(this often includes broadband) that cause the problems.  Living anywhere short of a 3rd world country, there is no excuse for having a ping of over 350ms, or any packetloss, ever.  Anyone with an ISP who cannot offer a decent service should switch.

Broadband only is no good, since there are many areas(lots of which are urban or suburban) in the US where broadband isn't an option.  I feel for those poor souls, untill a few months ago I was one of them.

The group I have no sympathy for are those with bad isps, and/or the option for broadband, who are too cheap and/or lazy to get a decent connection.  Enforcing a certain quality of connection is a good idea, and I have trouble feeling sorry for those who aren't willing to invest in a decent connection.  A stable 300ms ping is not really a problem.  A player with a fluctuating 800ms ping, should simply be dropped by the server.

BTW, disguising a whine as a troll will only make the bait more appealing ;P

"Anyone with an ISP who cannot offer a decent service should switch. "

You'd be surprised at how often there are simply no options.   What you say is probably true in urban areas.   In rural areas though there is often no cable/DSL access and the phone lines themselves tend to be outdated crappy lines.  Satellite connections are notoriously bad for gaming.

A modem users ping is almost entirely dependent on thier ISP.  If you live somewhere where there is only one ISP, you must be in a 3rd world country.

AH is providing a service, it started with dial-up and now handles broadband.  For AH to continue to have a wide audience, they must stay ahead of the curve.
Open the curtains of your own little world; some people cannot handle the cost of even $10 more.  The suggestion of another server just for broadband would work; if that is the only customer you want.

Hint:   The "suggestion" was a troll, and a pretty obvious one at that (as in he said it himself in his own post).

So does England count as a third world country now?  On good nights I'm getting a ping of around 250.  On bad nights........

Well looks like rural Illinois just became 3rd world, I only have 1 ISP option they suck and treat all of us around here bad but being a monopoly they can get away with it.
I called to complain one time and was told 'If you don't like it go with someone else' knowing they are the only available ISP for my town.

imho, it seems HTC net coding has slipped some after the past few updates, when i started playing arounf tour 11 or so, and for quite a while afterwards, i think HTC did a good job at equalizing disparate connects, but the past few months it seems i'm noticing more "lag" shots that before i know wouldn't be hitting me, and upon asking i'm receiving responses of pings from 300-500...  as i said, before those ping times would still "smoothed" but now....

maybe it's just my imagination, maybe it's due to the increased numbers, maybe they did change something...

i dunno, just sayin' that it's more obvious now than prior the various connection/ping differences.

Shane, I think the enemy bias code is largely responsible for some of the problems.  It makes a planes location more accurate close in, but there is a point where it goes from low-accuracy to high-accuracy, and the plane jumps a significant amount.  The range it kicks in is too close IMO, being just at the edge of gun-range, so as you're closing for the gunshot, the warp of the bias switching kicks in.

Then again I could be wrong, it could just be the larger number of players online.

I find this hard to believe.

The only local ISP perhaps, but are you also including all of the national ISPs?

If you want good ping dial-up I recommend At&T Worldnet for Central Florida anyway.  My DSL ping isn't really THAT much better sometimes I wonder if it isn't about the same (I was always low 100's with ATT dial-up anyway).  This all depends on where you live of course, we have an excellent phone system in this area of the country.

Yes I am including the National ISP's from the town I live in any other ISP is a long distance call and with long distance rates as they are I would not be able to play any amount of time at all before my phone bill would be a 3rd world countries national debt!
Even my only local ISP is not that local, it is not a free call, so yes there are parts of the US that you consider 3rd world.

There are many areas in Maine that have only one ISP Innominate, you can chose to beleive it or not but it is a fact.
