Title: What the hell are the people on the roads thinking?
Post by: GtoRA2 on November 08, 2002, 09:33:03 AM
We are having the worst storm I have seen in the Bay area in years.

I am driving to go see a puppy last night. Rain so hard you can not see more then 50 yards. sometimes way less! Most of the other people on the road are driving like it's a normal day?? 70 plus miles an hour swerving in and out of traffic and tail gating.

What the hell are these people just stupid or what?

So this morn, rain even worse, I am driving to work in the Jeep and going as fast as I deem safe, 50 mph, in the slow lane. People are passing me at 70 plus?? and tail gating! And the freeway (237) is starting to flood, some places have 2 or 3 inches of standing water..

WHAT THE HELL!!?

They live in the bay area...they want to die.  Makes perfect sense.

Your typical driver is an amateur with a false sense of indestructability.  Most people use their cars as appliances: I need to open a can, I'll use this can opener; I need to go pick up something from the store, I'll use this car.  They put gas in it, and it goes.  When it stops going, they pick up a new appliance.

GTO - I can tell you're a safe driver, one with whom I would feel comfortable.  The trouble is that despite the carnage, people never learn. Kind of reminds me of...

...nope, I won't say it. ;)

you should see them in the snow and ice

*edit*

Snowmass opens tomorrow and Aspen opens next weekend :)
all powder (having hiked up and made a run already) and no rocks or post holes..

you're squeaking about driving in fremont???? shi-yat:)

come across the bay bridge dude if you really want to see the bottom of the barrell - since this storm has hit it now takes 1.5 hours to get 7 miles instead of the usual 45 minutes.

there's three types of rain drivers in the bay area  -

1. goes 112 to show how manly they are.
2. closes eyes, stops, cries because rain is scary.
3. the rest of us

rain + bay area drivers = stay home

have to agree.  The bay area is my ol' stompin' grounds and I'm glad all I have to deal with now are snowidiots.

actually around here, you see more 4-wheel drives off the side of the road than 'regular' vehicles.
Yeah a 4wd has good traction to accelerate and turn some but when it comes to stopping.  lol

I can't remember how many times I've had a discussion with someone about the fact that all vehicles are 4 wheel when it comes to braking.
They (4wd drivers) just don't get it until they're in the ditch.

Pic inc!!

I need to get a few new pics.

I still have not figured out the hidden headlight, they are all there, but, I hook vacuum to them and nothing happens. So now I think I am going to have to trace all the lines and that is going to suck cause they are wrapped with electrical tape with the headlight and motor wiring harness.

It is runninglike a champ now though.

Actually, I read that 40% of autos on the roads today are SUV's, that would account for why you see so many in the ditch in bad weather, combined with "over confidence" drivers of said vehicles.

man that is one sweet GOAT !! yeah baby.

of course now that puppy would SUCK in the snow :)

I agree RIP.. over confidence is a huge one around here.
I drive a 4wd (cherokee) and I have no problems whatsoever.
but it never fails... just this morning.. suburban in the ditch on the way to work.

I'm beggining to think my drive to work is getting to be like frogger... avoiding tourons, suv's, wild game, construction vehicles (which have popped up like a rash)...

and I'm the frog!

It is not to bad a car, a tad top heavy, but I have beaten the hell out of it a few times off road and on Pismo beach.

LoL I drive it more carefully then any other car though.

I had a full-size Blazer and loved it, talk about fun off road! lol and man nothing like an old beat up truck to abuse, but that too, I drove very carefully. I also never washed it, lol went mudding and the blue truck was brown tell it rained again...
and MAN what a nice back seat!! :D

When your braking distance is so long, I can not see how these jokers in Suberbans and other BIG suv can feel safe tail gating? lol

:D

Wlfgang, 1 speeding ticket (19 in a 15 mph zone  ) and 1 accident (illegal immigrant ran a stop light , and hit my motorcycle in 1980) in 27 years of driving.  Did I tell you I'm superstitious? ;)
Title: What the hell are the people on the roads thinking?
Post by: Wlfgng on November 08, 2002, 11:09:44 AM
the problem up here in snow country is that guys think that because they've taken their 4wd off road (dirt) and hot rodded around in the dirt, got airborne, whatever..
that they think that ice/snow driving is the same.

there are plenty of responsible , skilled drivers but there's that one in 10 (or whatever) that just want to remove themselves from the gene pool.

damn rip.. that's pretty good.

I've been totalled by a drunk driver while sitting at a stop light and I've had a few speeding tickets (years ago, new SS) but other than that I've been lucky.
Especially considering I drive to Denver frequently in the winter for hockey games and such.  3 hour one way of mountain driving over the divide.

A couple 3 years ago I drove thru Atlanta during morning hour rush hour in THE worst rainstorm I've ever been in.  I could BARELY see past the hood of my car, let alone 50 feet.  I was going maybe 45 and I wanted to go slower, but was afraid I'd get rear ended.

Those boneheads were going by me at 70+ mph.  One guy in an explorer hydroplaned and rolled right behind me.  The people that managed to get around him just kept on trucking as fast as they could.  Still hydroplaning as they went by me.

It was 1 hour plus of the most white knuckle driving I've ever been in.  When we finally got out of Atlanta, I was soaking wet from sweat from the stress.

You guys that live down there, in Atlanta and surrounding area that do the commute, no offense here..

YOU'RE ALL NUTS!!!!  SLOW THE HELL DOWN!!  :D

I can laugh about it now, but I wan't a happy camper immediately afterwords...

You going to burn in muscle car hell for saying that.

It is a PONTIAC GTO

Not even the same underpinnings as a nova.

It is a GM A body like the chevelle, skylark, 442, etc.

The nova was the 60s version of the ford escort.

And I concur on the drivers around here, they suck.  I think some of it can be traced to recent immigrants and their offspring.  But there are plenty of WASPy mofos driving like @#$!@# too.  The sad thing is that the "storm" yesterday was just a light drizzle by midwestern standards.  I don't know what people around here would do if we actually had a real T-storm.

Your tellin me, Commute? Hell on a Sun. afternoon at 3pm traffic is the same as M-F at 5-8.  Thing is all you damn yankees moved down here, and created one hell of a mess.  I have lived in GA all my life and can remember only 8-9 years ago traffic in Atl. was non existant with the exception of rush hour.  Hell I live in what would be called the "stick" of the metro area.  It used to take me 15 minutes to get to Stn. Mtn. Park from my house.  The equivalent of 10-15mile drive.  NOW if I were to make that drive today 30+ minutes easily.  Friggin CarpetBaggers

Californians in general can't drive in the rain. It was raining in OC this morning and the 405 was a nightmare: wall to wall SUVs driving 70mph with 8 feet between cars. And they wonder why they end up with 100 car pile ups?

Yep my chevelle is having a "vintage air" system being put in it right now.   Most women don't like black interior when it gets to be over 100 or so.   Radio?   I don't see how anyone could hear a radio in a car..  even if you could... how would you hear the exhaust or the lifters?   dumb idea that radio thing.

The first day I had my mini I was coming home from a nice drive and it had just started raining.  We were on a 3 lane freeway on a semi-steep downgrade and traffic was moving along at a steady 55.  The rain was not particularly blinding... just steady (If you lived in the NW you'd know exactly what I was talking about).

I looked in my review mirror and saw a car aproaching at about 90 in the left lane.  I was in the center lane and 3 cars were ahead of me about 100 yards effectively blocking all 3 lanes.  The car sped past me then realized it had no place to go and locked up the breaks.  It skidded sideways and put the driver's door about 1 foot behind the rear bumper of the car ahead of me in the center lane, but never hit it.  I and a couple other cars slowed to let things work themselves out when the car caught a rut and actually corrected itself back to driving straight down the road.

The car that had skidded was now in the right lane tailgaiting the car in front of it.  As I passed, I saw that it was a teenage girl (or just barely into her 20's) who was ghost white and shaking her head.  She immediately dove into the center console or her purse to pull out her cellphone presumably to tell her best friend what just happened... as she was still tailgating the car in front of her in the right lane.

I just hope that when she goes... she doesn't take anyone else with her.

I keep telling her that!

"The exhaust is all the music I need!" Me

"You are such a dork" her.

"But I can hear if something is wrong with it, with no radio" Me

"Her, it is just a supernova, and not very cool without a radio" Her

"bah! I got you a horse and a puppy and you still wont ride in it??"  Me.

"Yeah, it needs that wing thingy for the back too! It is really not very cool as is" her

"AHHHHHHH!!!!!" me lol lol

Oh well, on the up side she enjoys shooting, we just can't drive the Goat to the range!

Beetles sig is on a rant about gun laws, U.S. vs Brits.

And it says it all...

First...

"Everyone in Britain loves a loser. It's the winners we can't stand!"

Then...

America’s constitutional right to bear arms is an anachronism dating back to the 18th century. In modern times, it is an unmitigated disaster which has given rise to many millions of privately owned guns and an alarming homicide rate, with a tally of more than 300,000 firearms related homicides in the past 25 years. While no law can be 100% effective, Britain has no “gun culture”, and much stricter firearms controls which have contained the annual tally of gun related homicides to a double digit value - fewer than one fiftieth of the American gun-related homicide rate per 100,000 population.

Nuff said.

Most 4WDs aren't until you tell them to be. Well, at least over here thats the way it is.

Many 4WD owners have no clue how to put their vehicle into 4WD drive mode, nor the difference between 4WDs with and without centre diff's, and difference between driving in 4WD mode with the center diff unlocked or locked.

4WDs in 2WD mode are usually tail heavy, which is where things go wrong and they tend to slide.

Then you have the AWD  (AI 4WD) where the car transfers power based on its assessment of traction. Of course like any AI system its more Artificial Stupidity. Although it seems to do quite nicely in Subaru's the bigger AWDs seem to suffer from Artificial Confusion.
