The real cost is operating it.  Still, Who wouldn't want to get thier own airforce started?

"Winning bidder will be put immediately in direct contact with owner of aircraft (USA citizen) who is not the listed seller on this auction page. Listed seller is acting as authorized broker. Winning bid will be required to submit current bank account data to owner for the bid amount before aircraft inspection can be arranged plus a small deposit of 5%. Deposit is refundable if aircraft does not pass buyer's inspection, otherwise it is applied to purchase price. "

5% of $205,000 is still about $10,000.  Isn't it funny that they won't let you inspect the aircraft unitl you've dropped the 10 Gs?  Hmmm, I pity the nitwit that bids on this.  Actually, I may just keep bumping up the bid, then welch out just to foil what is obviously a grift.

It's one thing to screw some poor sap out of a couple hundred dollars, but stealing $10k from someone who's trying to buy a $200k+ airplane is a pretty stupid move.

Anyone serious about buying it is going to want thier $10k back, and thats more than enough to be worth hiring a lawyer for.

True indeed, which makes this grift doubly stupid.

Anybody happen to know the maintenence schedule and checklist process etc... for a Mig21 might be. Im daydreaming this in my head about owning it and flying it around for fun chasing airliners and mooning the passengers etc... How many hours of fun you get for each engine overhaul and new wing or airframe check? What about the tires?

Mig-21s and airliners don't mix, if you believe the Ustica folk.

Maybe the thinking behind the 5% thing was they don't want to be wasting time giving tours round their aircraft to stunninghunks with no cash.

It is however a bad way of selling the thing. Likely there's less than 20 people in the US with both the money and the experience to fly the thing safely anyway, better to just ask around.

200k is GD expensive anyway. There's cheaper to be had.

A little while ago there were more than a dozen Hawker Hunters sitting at RAF Scampton in the UK going for as little as £60,000. A lot more fun to fly and maintain than a Mig, (a lot cheaper too). Not sure if they've all been sold yet.

What used to be Source aviation here is all up for sale as well last time I checked. Mixture of single and twin seat Vampire/Venoms. This lot in fact (http://www.museum-explorer.org.uk/museum-explorer/site_details_return.php?museum=42#103)

A brand you Cessna 182 fully equiped will cost you more.:D  The fuel is the killer. My previous Skytyper leader, ex Croatian Mig21 pilot, it's longest mission was 47 minutes:D
Put the burner on, climb to alt and get ready to come back, you out of fuel.
Buying is always ok, usually you enjoy the thing till you need to overhaul the engine. Having the training to fly it is "easy" in a Mig21, a lot of two seaters available. In Chino, there is a Hawker, the guy (a chyropractor) can't fly it, he cannot get it's hand on a two seater Hawker. He has only a private pilot too, but you don't need anything anyway. So he comes on the week end, in it's flying suite and washes it.
As far as having fun in it, you have the 250kts restriction below 10,000ft. If you go above and push it at Mach2, you better know where you are, a couple of minutes of fun and you just busted a restricted airspace. Cross the flight path of an airliner while doing some of funky flying, and enjoy the reading of an "airmiss".... you can always shut down your transpondeur but ATC will be more than happy to send f16s to wonder what's cruising around at mach2. When F16s take off, you the one who pays the bill BTW:cool:
I don't say you can't have fun, you just can't have "unpredicted fun". Everyfligth is a paperwork nightmare .... rememebr ... 47 minutes:D

I was wondering about that 250kt restriction.

Darn

Of course you could just be like me, living on the coast so you could just leave US airspace :)

What happens if you buzz airliners over international waters? :D

Anyone with enough money to purchase  and operate that plane should have the common sense to provide the 10k (or whatever), in the form of a letter of credit.  This assures the seller of the money, while protecting the buyer from some scamming bozo.  Its common practice when engaging in large transactions with those of questionable, or unknown history and/or legitimacy.

Unfortunately, I do talk to those every once in a while that have lots of money but no clue....ah well

Isn't it what Proxy is for? A third party who keeps the money and make sure everythign is in order?

Has some of the same uses, but a letter of credit is form a bank that is regulated by federal laws and guidlines.  A proxy may just be your cousin Sal, and with two parties with no for knowlege of each other, its can be challanging to get both to agree on a person or 3rd party as such very quickly (unless one of the parties is a moron.....but thats another thread)

Good to know, ty Alf. (I'm a natural nice guy believer in the good of the human nature. I'm a target falling from even for crooks).
