That P51 prop cross is indeed mean.

Where do those models come from?
-
MODs for Janes WWII Fighters

Thats a five year old sim for ya..... No more excuses!
-
Yup!, still on my HD.

hmmm, quite a few custom made skins on that Site... and not one of them pink!
What's wrong with these people? Don't they know that when you get a chance to make custom skins, they should be pink?
I mean, that's how it would be in Aces High, right? yup, that's what they say...

Those arent just skins, many are full all out new 3D models. The ironic thing is this mod feature is actually what ruined the game for me and many others at JCN. You see the first thing they unlocked was the FM code, and it only took a few days for the cheaters to appear en-masse in online play. Initially it was kinda fun for me to get accused of cheating every time I whooped somebody in a dogfight at JCN but after a while the novelty of that wore off because it then happend practically every game and of course there were actually loads of cheaters. Thats when I quit Janes WW2 Fighters and several months later I started playing AH.
And now these mods are the only thing keeping the game alive.... :D

GH, on Hyperlobby you can still play. They also have it so that it checks for the original FMs.
With MODs you can't play.

Jane's was sure ahead of their time when they produced their sim! I'd put it on automatic and just watch the fly-by view:)

The textures and details are nice, but HTC's P-51D actually has a more accurate shape despite the low poly count... look at the profile and compare it to a photo, especially the canopy but the nose as well. Warbirds 3 made similar mistakes on their Mustang. Looks like crap IMHO (though their F6F is even more inaccurate). My only complaint about HTC's "outdated" models are the octagonal shapes of the radial engines.
I still have all the Jane's games on my hard drive and try to keep up with the mods as well :) The only Jane's game I am missing is Apache Longbow series.

That P-51 model is rubbish. It's all out of proportion.
And the Spit looks a bit weird. Presumably it's a Griffon engined later Mark (going by the bumps in the nacelle), but it just looks strange.
Skins are nice though.

Longbow Gold and F/A-18 don't want to load on my Win2k system, unfortunatly.

The P51 really only has 2 problems:
1. Canopy too tall and too "peaky".
2. Spinner too blunt.
These make the plane look too short and tall, otherwise its excellent.
The Spitfire vertical stab is too small but everything else looks really good for a MkXIVe (cannon fairing reversed though) or MkXVIII.
Either way they are much better in overall appearence to the AH models.

I think the problem would be with creating a game that looks as good as WW2 Fighters (I prefer IL2 myself) while at the same time keeping the download footprint under 500 megs. Short of them offering a 'high res' version on CD for something like 15 bucks I can't see a lot of people being able to download the thing.
The other problem is with the systems people need to fly the thing. Many of us have XP 2000+ and PIV systems, many don't and we don't want to run the system requirements up on this game so high that it makes the game unreachable for the average flier.
I do agree though, AH visual model is getting somewhat long in the tooth, it probably is time for an upgrade, at least an optional one for those that have the time and system that can run it.

So the models are flawed to a noticeable degree. My point exactly.
-
aren't Jane's games unrealistic? Except for F15?
-
Even at d150 you don't see anything of that. Not even at 1600x1200.
-
All computer games are unrealistic... just a matter to what degree.
In general, the Jane's games are designed more for gameplay than realism (except F-15 and F/A-18). I bought WW2 Fighters after I had already been playing Aces High. The graphics were fantastic complete with spent cartridges falling into the airstream and the sound was great too. But having gotten spoiled by AH FMs, I never really played WW2F much. Fighters Anthology on the other hand is still one of the best survey jet sims in terms of flight models when the user libs (like 714 libs) are used. However, its graphics and details are so dated that it hurts my eyes to play it. USAF was the other way around... graphics quality that is just now being surpassed that ran great on low end machines, but atrocious flight models.
"realistic" or not, the Jane's games usually offered a lot of variety and great playability. All of them have been well supported by user mods.
I still like the shape of the AH P-51 better than any WW2F mod. While playing AH, I don't notice the polygon faces too much, but the mishaped nose and canopy of WW2F bothers me a lot.
