The caption that accompanied the photo said this was a CV-12 (USS Hornet) hanger deck catapult.  In the WWII move "A Wing And A Prayer", there's a short sequence near the end that shows a TBF Avenger being catapulted from the hanger deck, no the flight deck.

a captapult for AH might help some of us launch overloaded corsairs from the CV

The Yorktown class, Wasp, and Essex had Hanger deck cats. The idea was scout planes could be launched without having to respot a deck load of planes.
