Title: In appreciation of HTC
Post by: Wanker on October 03, 2001, 10:15:00 AM
Since I took over the head CM job for Verm last January, I've had my head down doing mostly CM adminstrative stuff, and haven't had much time to fly AH. I've been flying the TOD's, but haven't been in the MA for a long, long time.

Last night, I put the finishing touches on my new AMD 1.4Ghz system, and got it all setup to run AH. So, I log into the MA last night for the first time in months, and I am astounded at how much fun I had.

The sheer beauty of the game, running on a GF3 card at 1280x1024x32, is simply amazing. With my fps' maxed out at my monitor refresh rate of 85, the game is fluid and gorgeous.

I had a very successful sortie in my beloved C.205, and even brought my kills home and landed them. I saw some old faces that I haven't seen in awhile, and saw a lot of people I don't know yet.

After reading the threads on the BBS lately about what it wrong with AH, I thought I'd give you the perspective of someone who doesn't get to spend two hours each night in the MA. I find that there's a whole lot more that's right with AH, than what's wrong with it.

As a CM, I get to talk to Pyro and the folks at HTC every couple of weeks, and I've gotten to know them fairly well(looking forward to meeting them in person at the Con!). The sheer dedication and amount of work these people do is amazing.

I'm not trying to pick a fight here, but maybe some of you guys that are always finding fault with AH need to stop and take a step back and really take a good look at what HTC has accomplished. Is it perfect? Nope, and it'll always be a work in progress. But I think HTC is very responsive to it's players, as long as we use logic and facts in our arguments, instead of hyberbole and invective.

Sorry for rambling, but what I guess I'm trying to say is that after a long time away from the MA, I rediscovered last night just how good Aces High really is.

Thanks HTC, see you all at the con. <S>

The game has come a long way since BETA.

And although I do have my wish list (new, improved artwork for most the original beta planes) I gotta admit I'm content with AH more now than a year ago.

I don't log on as much as I used to, switched to a new schedule at work a few months ago, 4/12 on 4 off.

But the biggest thing I miss is seeing the HTC crew online as much as we used to the 1st year AH was out.

There's just sumthin' tantilizingly satisfying about shootin' down NATEDOG, SUPERFLY, HiTECH or PYRO... I dunno, maybe it's cuz' a mere mortal dweeb gets ta fling lightning bolts back at the GODZ.

<S> HTC crew WTG keeping the faith!

I am actually pretty pleased at the way things get fixed in AH and the direction they go and the speed that they do...  I still want some things to evolve sooner tho.  can't help but comment when they don't..

Right on banana!

BTW if you'd just hand the wife a 20$ bill every other day or so. Tell her to take herself & the kids to the mall for an hour or so. While she's off enjoying herself, you get a uninterupted hour or 2 of flying!

banana!

I think I'm gonna try building my own PC, and am leaning toward Athlon 1.4/GeForce 3.
What mobo/harddrive/ etc did you use?

You're here in Minnesota, right?

oboe, i just put in a 1.2ghz a month ago.  I upgraded to a ECS K7S5A model motherboard.  It supports AMR, DIMM, or DDR ram.. which is purty good.

How much does a Geforce 3 go for nowadays?  I've seen it priced at local stores around  $350?  I think thats way too much.

oct out!

I just cant hold it back any longer!  (Sniff)  Sometimes a good cry just lets it all out and then I can climb back into that 109.

Great work, Aces High!

Well said banana. Let us not forget there are just as many, or actually quite a few more that DO spend two hours each night (well alot anyway) in the MA that also DO find that there's a whole lot more that's right with AH, than what's wrong with it.

I agree with you, this game has been the best combat sim i've flown yet (and i've tried all the other popular ones)

I dont really have anything major to complain about and I like the fact that ppl who work on the game actually play it and pay attention to their customers (someting which i didn't see in other sims, esp. WB)

Looking forward to the update.

Yes banana S!

The reason why allot of people stick to AH for so long, says something about their appreciation of the good things in AH.

I would like to add my kudos to HT and company too. These guys work thier buns off to give us a good overall gaming experience. Having seen first hand some of the things they do to try to ensure a good flight model I can only sit in awe at what they have accomplished in such a short time.

If most of us players would just work with the tools (planes, gv's) that they give us and quit worrying about the small details I think we could all enjoy this much more. I would like to see the paddle blade prop on the D-11 though... :) (jk)

Hey Oboe,

I'm in Rochester. We should get together sometime and have a beer or two. I think Dago is up in Lakeville, and Ghosth is only a hop, skip & jump away in Fargo. Maybe if some more Minnesotan's would pipe up we could have a get-together somewhere in the cities.

As far as the new system, here's what I went with, building it myself:

Antec SX-830 Case
Asus A7M266 motherboard
AMD 1.4 GHZ/266 mhz bus Athlon CPU
512 MB Crucial PC2100 DDR-RAM
40 GB IBM GXP60 7200 RPM Hard Drive
Gainward GeForce 3 video card
Plextor 24/10/40 Plexwriter CD-R/CD-RW
Pioneer S106 Slot Feed 16x DVD drive.
SB Live value sound card

Kinda funny that I have a 40 GB hard drive, and I only have two games installed on it, Aces High and Grand Prix Legends. But I just don't have time for any other games at the moment.

Damned, I'd like to say that I know when 1.08 is going to be released, but I don't. I talk to Pyro a lot on the phone, but there are some things he won't tell me, and that's one of them.  :)

Couldnt had said it better myself  ,,,,,,
and congrats with your new system(gonna buy
one myself,,if wife allows  ;)!!.
But banana why dont you run it at the highest
resolution,shouldnt it be able to?.
Title: In appreciation of HTC
Post by: Wanker on October 04, 2001, 09:49:00 AM
True, Dawvgrid, I could run it at 1600x1200, but the best refresh rate my monitor(19" Viewsonic PF790) can do at that resolution is 60 hrz. The flicker at that resolution drives me nuts, so I leave it at 1280x1024 at 85 hrz.

The quality really shines here. There's something to be said for a small private company that works to do it RIGHT for its customers instead of doing what the corporate beancounter says is important. WTG HTC.
