I want to do this again..its been 18 years since my first jump. I think I might look into it again this spring.
-
airelfenhead will probably be able to give some pointers ... :)
jk
actually I'm getting close to doing that myself.
First I think I'll try some parasailing off the hill here this winter.
-
YEHAAAAA!
Just once was enough though thanks.
-
Watch out for chute strafers.
-
The last time I was out at Kapowsin where we jump we had this guy that hadn't jumped in a year, he had to requalify by doing a static line and DRP. Well, he exited, did his DRP but grabbed the reserve handle instead of the dummy ripcord and open his reserve along with the main. They began to "fight" one another, almost collaping each other into a potential roman candle...he finally had the sense to cut away his main and ride out the reserve. To make matters worse, he landed in the only fugging tree within 5 miles...had to call the fire dept. to get him out.

Curval, I've only made 11 jumps, my last 6 being 30 sec delays (we had an old 172 that had a real problem getting altitude with 3 jumpers and a pilot, thus, the 30 sec. delay jumps instead of the 60 second jumps) Nothing compares to free falling. You don't feel like your falling at all, it actually feels like your flying, riding this big pillow of air. It feels as though the earth is coming up to you, not the other way around.
-
just don't let the earth come up and slap you!!!
I hate when that happens.
Out carousing the bars, head home on slick sidewalks and WHAM.. friggin sidewalk whaps me upside the head without provication!
but at least I can get back up to do it all over again.

Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrright
That's what they said when we were getting ready to jump on the static line...and lemme tell ya....I dropped like a stone until that chute came out.
Maybe after a little while in the air the feeling changes...but I have no desire to be free falling that long thanks.
-
.. yeah I think you have to reach closer to equalibrium while falling.. you were still getting up to speed :)

Thats because you didn't hit terminal veloscity. It takes about 10-12 seconds to hit TV. Your static line opens the chute well before that.

Ya know Curval, the first time you posted this I laughed my bellybutton off. Same thing this time. That is a great picture, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. LOL :D

I bought a bunch of WWII tapes at a garage sale last year, and they are loaded with images the History Channel would never air, good stuff, all pretty much real combat. Anyway, the combat photos guys really captured some great paratroop invasion footage.
Can anyone explain why in WWII the paratroops just 'crashed' for lack of better words? I mean, they just hit like they fell off a 20' roof. When they get up, you just are amazed. Alot pry didn't I could only guess or with shorter legs.
We watched the firefighter drop in at a airshow in Fernely and it was amazing. They all hit in a row, on a dot, and most all standing if they jumped from a shot glass. Were chuts that bad then?
-
Rip
On behalf of many here, I'd *love* to toss you from my airplane....good grief, we'll have to have a lottery to see which of us pilots gets the honor of shoving ya out :)
Only one static jump here, *almost* had to eject once...well, sorta...pulled the handles but the seats were turned off. This as the jet skidded off the runway....
You picked a kinda chilly time of year to wanna skydive!
-
The sad truth is the Army continued using the old WW2 style chutes way too long. Countless people have been injured or killed using those crummy chutes :(
-
I am going to go skydiving this summer with my uncle in texas.
I have always wanted to so what the h**l

they just hit like they fell of a 20 ft roof
Pretty much exactly as it is done today. They hit at about the same velocity of a 20 ft free drop.
Military for standard Paratroop drop still uses a round main, only slightly steerable, and without the ability to flair it like a parabolic sport chute.
Some military units, like the HALO jumpers use a newer chute, but for mass troop jumps, its the old canopy. They continue to do this for a few reasons. They do most jumps at night, don't want them flying away from the drop zone, dont want them slamming into each other, want the troop to get down fast to minimize time hanging under canopy and getting shot at. Injuries are unfortunately not uncommon, but I guess overall the minds in charge have thought the risks of round drop fasts are less than the risks in steerable soft landing chutes in a combat situation.
I have heard they the military is looking in the not to distant future to changing towards the new chutes. There would be some advantages as long as the training is done right, and I suspect it will be.

I did my first static line on my 18th birthday. I remember sitting hanging out the side of the aircraft thinking 'this is totally stupid' and then I think my brain overloaded because the next thing I remember is floating down in the silk.
I'd love to get back into it. It's been a while since my last one but a combination of other projects, lack of time, weather and how much it costs has put me off.
BTW LePaul, It's a good job the seats in that Vampire were u/s. You'd have ended up as a red smear. The canopy in 2 seat Vampires has to be jettisoned before attempting ejection. Lucky eh?
The one i'm involved with is a way off from flying yet.

As crazy as it sounds Dago, that makes sense, actually. ty

Done a few jumps here, but it proved too expensive - Had to choose between flying and jumping. Flying won, hands down but those few jumps were a kick.

MiG
edit: thats not me, I took the photo.
-
Damn Mig, from that angle it almost looks like a HALO jump :D Did you jump locally? I jumped out at Kapowsin, saw my old jumpmaster at the Boeing Business Jet open house at Boeing field earlier this year.
-
One guy, on April 5 1988 around 10:00pm (While I was still in mommy tummy about to pop out in the morning) on tv there was a guy who was testing a new helmet cam,
well he jumped out and filmed the other jumpers and as he reached the altitude to pull his chute the silver puller was gone,
he didnt wear his chute, poor guy...My dad told me that someone was asking if anyone else had heard of it and he said., "I could tell you the date the time and where!"
Remember to wear your chute..

no doubt.. let it happen!

Creamo,
The military chutes today still drop almost just as fast. The chute currently used by the 82nd Airborne division, the T10-C drops at 18-22 feet per second and it isn't pleasant when you slam into the ground. The Special Forces guys/Green Berets (I hear those guys are pretty cool) use an MC1-1C (unless on a HALO team) which is steerable and has a little softer landing. Large units such as the 82nd cannot use steerables as there would be a lot of mid-air entanglements with that many paratroopers in the air at the same time.

Climbs onto roof of home, jumps off counts one onethousand two. POW! Uh thats not so bad.

Now put on a 40lbs backpack and jump off your roof.

lol, I was being sarcastic. You goto be CRAZY to jump out of a plane.
:)

I made my first and as yet only jump (tandem) about two years ago. I had heard about the sensation you get when you freefall, but to me it just seemed really windy. I forked out an extra $30 to get a personal videographer. That was cool except for the guy kept wanting me to smile and give thumbs up and crap. I just wanted to enjoy the view. I'd go again, but yeah it's like $100 a pop. One of my friends that I went with said he got more of a rush from bungee jumping.
-
Main difference from WWII and after WWII is they discovered that dropping your pack and weapons and letting them hang off a tether line to hit the ground first would result in fewer injuries than dropping with everything attached to the jumper. As the extra weight of weapon and pack hit the ground, the jumper's drop velocity slowed down causing far fewer injuries.

Shows ya how much I know about the subject, I thought Terminal Velocity was the speed at which ya hit the ground when your chute didn't open.

Jump out of an airplane yeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh........ ..
Maybe if it was on fire....maybe.
I have been 806 feet above terra firma before (got drunk and climbed a TV tower, tallest one in the Province.) At the top I never once thought "Hey maybe I should go about 6000 feet higher and jump."
That was way too high.

Found a few more and scanned them...the other guy is a co-worker who still works here.

Oh yay! The greatest sport on earth, skydiving is.
Going out this weekend. Minus 25C at 4k meters, but man, it's worth it :D.
Hey Ripper, we should go skydiving together some day. I've gotten the hang fo this free flying thing pretty well. Let's see who hits the ground first :D

25 C? Thats insane, you must really love the sport. You make it to Washington, we'll go to Kapowsin to jump. Kawposin skydiving is 12 miles as the crow flies from Mt. Rainier, the highest "Sea-level to 14k" volcano/Mtn. on the cascade mtn. range..its really a site to behold.
-
Buncha bailing dweebs, I bet the plane was still flyable too ;)

Aw Rip... cmon, that's just an excuse for posting..... hair :D
