Title: need advice: headset
Post by: ccvi on November 15, 2002, 01:20:44 PM
I'd like to buy an ANR headset.

Unfortunately my flight instructor didn't really suggest which one. Except that he said I should get a Sennheiser (made in Germany, that's where I live) so it would be easier to get repairs if it should brake.

Any suggestions which one's quiet and comfortable to wear?

(for use in small powered aircraft).

Check out the Headsets Inc. headset- I've got both that and a David Clark, and although the passive noise reduction is better in the DC (important for open-cockpit stuff) I think the ANR feature is just as good (if not better) in the Headsets' version, and the last I checked it's substantially cheaper.

They also make a do-it-yourself ANR kit for David Clark's, but you've gotta be better with a soldering iron than I am to make it work.

I doubt anyone would buy an ANR headset for sims, Wolfgang :)

I never liked the look of the Sennheiser and you can get spares for DC sets anywhere in the world...and if you plan to do any flying upside down, get one of the wireframe mic-booms as the flexible ones tend to bend away from the mouth when pulling G's.
Also, do you really need ANR?...if you are learning, I'd say it's overkill...pick up an Avcomm set instead...far more reasonable price (and reasonable quality).

For studios the only way to go is AKG ;)

CCVI,

Been a few years, Davey Clarks were reliable and moderately priced, but the best set I ever used was a pair of Bose Avn Headsets.

I few noisy Helos and these cut out the back ground noises the best in addition to being very comfortable. Do not know the availablity in europe though.

I fly with the Pilot PA 17-79. ANR, list about $459, you can find them for $400.  They have the nicad battery built in, very convienient, and very comfortable.
